Or more importantly, I am asking if there is anywhere that we get a vague idea of the possible number of inquisitors at any given time. Are they common enough that we could expect a couple Inquisitors per imperial world? Per System? Per Sub-sector? I realize they are not distributed evenly, and will aggregate where their specific charges take them, but in broad terms I was just curious if a given planetary governor was more likely to bump into an Inquisitor than say a Cannoness superior.

The only real reference I can find to size, is that the Ordo Hereticus is the largest of the inquisitions Ordos.

I realize the Inquisition is not in the habit of releasing their roll call :D

Nope! Nothing to suggest it's overall size far as I'm aware.

And I dare say Imperial bigwigs bump into Inquisitors, or their operatives far more often than they could possibly know!

Going by their codex here are the listing of numbers they gave for minor ones, and some Ordo Have Vanished over the years(Chronos being the one know one but in the info about them it states other Ordo have Vanished) Also 17 Ordo based on Terra alone.
I'd guess the Major 3 have way more than most of these together(each), and reading more it states they grow and shrink depending on threats.
(all numbers are number of Inquisitors in the groups, not including henchmen)
Ordo Aegis is unknown.
Ordo Astartes is over 50
Ordo Astra is under 50
Ordo Barbarus under 10
Ordo Custodum greater than 50
Ordo Desolatus just 1(yes only one)
Ordo Excorium over 100
Ordo Militarum over 500
Ordo Necros just 5.
Ordo Sanctorum unknown but watches over the Ecclesiarchy so most likely high.
Ordo Scriptus just 6
Ordo Senatorum unknown
Ordo Thanatos unknown
Ordo Vigilus unknow(but they watch over the Ordo Necros so cannot be that high, chances are 1 or 2)

As it's not something that seems to be religiously controlled I doubt there will ever be an upper or lower limit.

In Eisenhorn two to three Inquisitors operating in the same sector is a big deal, though Inquisitorial conclaves can be called in times of need, essentially a dozen or so Inquisitors could feasibly fight together if the mission demanded it.

Certainly there's so many variants of Inquisitorial politics that any two Inquisitors are more likely to pursue each other than have a bromance. Certainly two on the same world is unusual.

Wow that...is actually much more specific than I thought would ever be written! Thanks for the transcription of all those figures. So it is safe to say that the size of each of the three primary Ordos is >500 and < 6.02*10^23.

That's something at least =)

I get the impression that the inquisition might be like the Anglican church. Members of opposite ends of the spectrum would not recognise each others as working for the inquisition.

No they do recognize members from other branches but if they don't agree they end up declaring each other heretics and going to war if they don't have anyone to back up their claims.

They have seals to prove who they are.
