View Full Version : Possible Unbound Armies With Just Independent Characters?

We've all heard of the familiar 7th edition unbound armies such as all Riptides, dreadnoughts or a guard tank company. But another topic that has recently surfaced is the concept of unbound armies with just characters, such as 10 fully equipped Space Marine Captains with feel no pain and it will not die by using the Iron Hands doctrines.

Of course such a list is not designed for competitive play, but still sounds like a lot of fun to field a small army of elite warriors. So I thought I'd start a thread to discuss possible unbound armies using just Independent Characters (which is legal btw).

So if you had to make an 1500pt army using just independent characters what would you field?
Also bonus points if anyone can share any experiences fighting or playing such an army?

I am sorely tempted to do a Seven Samurai list for Space Wolves.

Love the models, and it somehow seems to fit their background. Not so much a battle, but a spot of jolly good fun for the top brass, winner has the highest head count!

Well it wasn't 1500, but at 1850, I ran a fully decked out astrubael vect archon court....it was 4 archons with blasters, haywire grenades, combat drugs and husk blades. Duke Sliscus, mails, urien rakarth, two haemonculus ancients, one with shattershard, for wound tanking. And of course, vect himself. All in a Dias. I've since modified it to be that plus 3 grots for wound tanking and a tantalus, instead of Dias, with night shields and grisly trophies.

Not sure what I'd run with only 1500. Probably a avatar of khaine court. I know it's not all independent characters but I haven't looked at enough different codexes hqs to figure anything else out.

you can do it, only thing you must abide by is limits on special characters and ally choices :)

If I had the models I'd do Farsight and the Eight all the time.

I've heard that it's supposedly a legal list, before unbound I mean?

Nah, It's just an HQ choice and his bodyguard. There's a really neat Altar of War mission you can run with them but in normal games you didn't have the troops requirement.

it was, the supliment allows you to run farsight, 5 Tau commanders, a IC Broadside, and an IC Riptide as a single unit.

In 6th you still needed to have two troops choices before you could run the eight as a unit outside the (hella fun looking) Altar of War mission where you fight a never ending Tyranid swarm.

10 fully equipped Space Marine Captains with feel no pain and it will not die by using the Iron Hands doctrines.

Sounds like the best way to represent the true abilities of space marines. A stand-in for a Deathwatch Kill Team?

I've played the Phoenix court + Eldrad vs my friend's CSM special characters... I have to admit it was a pretty fun game, although i don't think it's a fair matchup...

I ran all the HQ choices for Space Wolves with body guards.

You could go 30k route and stick in 3 primarchs, that would be hella fun :D

Don't take Lorgar though, auto invis is bull and won't win you any friends.

My list is a true Deathwatch team using Chapter Masters, Librarians, Masters of the Forge and Librarians. That way the Deathwatch marines are the best of the best, each can actually be from a different chapter using their chapter tactics, and can be equipped in a variety of ways. I will be trying my list out in about a week.

I know that a Librarian in Terminator Armor, Dante, Gabriel Seth, a Reclusiarch, Brother Corbulo, and Astorath the Grim are a seriously nasty team to try and kill. Especially if they all join Mephiston. It will wreck just about anything, but ZERO fun for the opponent as most of your army has a 2+ save and FNP.

I am willing to bet if ur fielding more than 1 primarch...you aren’t going to have many friends long anyways, Manus and Vulkin and Horus pushing up a mid field...even without the Lorgar its still not going to make u friends

I wonder if I could do Eisenhorn's warband from the Bequin cycle at that point total? Needs at least 1 Chaos Lord with Combat familiar, a daemonhost, and a whole mess of Exorcists.

But as for an IC list, an Iyanden Giant Robot list would be fun, and easy to make Battleforged. I was also thinking about a Nid Bucket List, but there aren't enough good ICs in that list. It would basically be the 3, a T-Guard brood for the Swarmlord and a bunch of Flyrants to round out the list. Now Daemons is a good list for ICs, as is Necrons. Loads of choice there.

I'm going to try to figure out how many points it would be to field all of the Space Wolves Great Wolfs together.

All the Necrons named ICs, with transports for the ones that can take them, come out to 1495 points. Even has a decent mix of anti-tank and anti-infantry.

Isn’t “The Eight” from the Farsight Enclaves book pretty much this? :P

In all seriousness though, i’d run an Officio Assassinorum team- all of the assassins!

After a discussion about the good old days and 6 grey knights, ive made 4 chapter masters with a few buts n bobs n a librarian, with converting, i get 5 terminators in a box to make 1500 points. If i remember, 2 psycannons, 1 incinerator, lib with titan n quick n summoning, all has 1 servo skull, should be a giggle!

Played a game last week with my forgeworld necrons.
List as follows:

Kutlakh The World Killer 220
Royal Court Of Maynarkh
• Maynarkh Lord: Warscythe; Phase Shifter 90
• Maynarkh Lord: Warscythe; Phase Shifter 90
• Maynarkh Lord: Resurrection Orb; Phase Shifter 110
Maynarkh Overlord: Warscythe; Mindshackle Scarabs; Sempiternal Weave; Phase Shifter 175
Royal Court Of Maynarkh
• Maynarkh Lord: Warscythe; Resurrection Orb; Phase Shifter 120
• Maynarkh Lord: Warscythe; Phase Shifter 90
• Maynarkh Lord: Warscythe; Phase Shifter 90
Maynarkh Overlord: Warscythe; Mindshackle Scarabs; Resurrection Orb; Phase Shifter 190
• Catacomb Command Barge: Gauss Cannon 80
Maynarkh Overlord: Warscythe; Mindshackle Scarabs; Resurrection Orb; Phase Shifter 190
• Catacomb Command Barge: Gauss Cannon 80
Maynarkh Overlord: Warscythe; Mindshackle Scarabs; Sempiternal Weave; Phase Shifter 175
Royal Court Of Maynarkh
• Maynarkh Lord: Warscythe; Resurrection Orb; Phase Shifter 120
• Maynarkh Lord: Warscythe; Phase Shifter 90
• Maynarkh Lord: Warscythe; Phase Shifter 90

2,000 points

It was a small list but every single model had a 3++ invulnerable save. A warscythe (except the one staff of light in kutlakh's squad, and Kutlakh himself with staff of light and S5 AP2 instant death weapon)
Also, each squad had a 4+ chance to get up.
Due to the "mark of the flayer" rule. I had a chance each combat for that unit/model to have rage and fearless. Due to all the models with that rule not being my warlord, they did not gift victory point when succumbing to the flayed ones.
They basically tore through everything. Multi assaults and saves causing them to slowly wipe out the enemy army. The only troubles I ran in to (which were more circumstantial) was Kutlakh getting assaulted by a dreadnaught with his court dead and not being able to do anything against it--tar-pit until a chariot could make it. Also, a squad assaulted by legion of the damned (which are pretty good now) tar-pit again but slowly chipped away.

Overall I really enjoyed the list. People didn't really complain due to the lack of general mobility and ranged weaponry (though I usually run an assault necron army anyway). Also because of the small amount of models on the board, allowing for a lot of concentrated fire.
Still. Is prefer to use the scarabs with +1 WS rending and fleshbane. Cheaper and virtually unlimited. >:D

I had a friend who ran what I believe was 1,000 points worth of a Chapter Master, Captains, a Land Raider Redeemer, and two Dreadknights versus normal force org Orks. The Captains had no upgrades. And they won, with the Master, two Captains, and the Raider left, as well as the Knights.

Did a 2v1, 3000 point game... I was on the side with the 2 players so 1500 for me:

My list consisted of something like:

Helbrecht
Grimaldus
Emperor's Champion
Kantor
Vulkan
5 man Sword Brethren squad(Vanguards) w/ Storm Shields and Power Weapons
a Land Raider Crusader
and a Storm Talon

I expected to die really early on... ended up winning the game and I only had Grimmy and Vulkan left on the board. (Granted my team mate did a lot of the objective work :P )

I'm not sure if it is that bad- most of the Primarchs have points sunk into their support abilities as well, which you are ignoring if you take just Primarchs. They seem fairly well costed in general.

at 1850 i did 14 farseers with bikes and speers but i ran out of bikes and had to field a 7 amn squad of warp spiders but u could probably fit 1 more bike in there super hard to kill with the right powers
