View Full Version : What keeps you gaming?

Evening all, and indeed, How Do?

So GW have taken a bit of a hit of late, yet many of us keep on plugging away.

But why? What is it about 40k that keeps you gaming away and fighting the good (or bad) fight?

I mean, the prices aren't cheap and there's various and sundry alternative games out there. I myself have recently branched out into X-Wing. £10 a model, no need to build or paint, everything you need per ship. Lovely.

But 40k? I just keep coming back time and time again. Orks this time around. Love the background, love the models, love the playstyle!

So what has you hooked?

What else are you going to spend your hard earned money on, hookers and blow?

This.

Also the fact that if I go to another system I'll end up blowing $10k on minis and supplies for that game, and my wife would kill me.

What keeps me in is the vain hope that totalwargamer will send me my rule book, only 2 months late.... Digital only is a bit of a drag.

Total Wargamer have gone out of business, they're not fulfilling any more orders and haven't been able to get anything from GW for the last 6 weeks as their account was closed due to them being the ****ing worst. Sorry mate.

Swines kept that quiet!

Have you got a source for that?

Had a wee Google, and you may be sort of right (http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?373585-Total-Wargamer-Problems./page5&).

I have an army and lots of bits. As long as there are a few of my friends playing or the odd game available I'll play. If the games aren't available I'll probably liquidate or just keep the bare minimum for those rare games that come up. I play to game with my friends or in the local META. So that is all that keeps me playing. The minute the local gaming shifts (as our seems to be going to Warmachine/Hordes and Bolt Action) I'll be playing that. It is the people that matter. Games are just games and all are dime a dozen.

I keep playing these games so I can hang out with my friends: cool froods like Caithsidhe and Plasticaddict. I will keep gaming as long as my compadres keep gaming.

Like Defenestratus.
Too much money and time invested to be jumping ship at this point.
Had Flames of War been around in 1982, when I first wanted to wargame seriously, I'd have picked that up and collected that.
After a while, I would probably have diversified into other games.

As it was, I bought "Panzer" which was a pretty serious game, but only had die-cut cardboard tokens for models and I couldn't get anybody interested enough to play.

Mid-eighties had me collecting White Dwarf and trying various RPGs without much success.

Then it became a straight choice between WHFantasy and WH40K once Rogue Trader hit the shelves.
The clincher for 40K was that it was a Skirmish Game and needed a lot less models and investment than Fantasy.
Which is a bit ironic seeing as I now have in excess of 20,000 Points of Eldar.

To be honest, I think were going through a golden period at present.
I've never played so much as I have these last five years of so and I've converted my cellar into a games room with a permanent 6' x 4' Board up, which has three playing surfaces that can be interchanged at a few minutes notice.
There's the ubiquitous Snow covered Ruined City that has twenty-four Ruins half of which are 13.5" tall.
A Forest Board that can with twenty-five bases of three trees available.
Lastly a Desert Board with Dunes.
The Forest and Desert Boards have plenty of Eldar, Tyranid and Industrial Terrain to theme them into a narrative.

Yeah, too much money and time invested and too much love for the game and everything that engenders.

I concur: I'm also heavily invested in these games... I've come too far to stop!

I keep playing.. because I have the models to play 40k.

Though I'm not really motivated to play 40k at the moment and spend my money on other gaming systems; there's still a reason I keep my roughly 6k of Chaos forces around. If I would, I could probably get a game in.

I've been slimming down my armies/collection though, but I figured I would just need one big collection of a single army (well, Daemons/Chaos marines) to give me some options.

So yes, I keep gaming cause I have the models and I keep gaming because... good question, lol. My friend, with whom I played 40k, is already changing gamesystem as well. I think I keep my collection around for when I want a game in and clearly 40k is more supported in my area.

I love the 40k aesthetic and lore, I actually find the game mechanics fun (as much as the internet would have you believe that literally everyone thinks the mechanics are utter junk) and I already have loads of models! I play 40k because I still love it, it's a great setting and a really fun game. Besides, gets us oot the hoose.

Also, sympathies with you, Wolfshade. I ordered Dark Vengeance from them when I got back into the hobby and it was a full 2 months late eventually (and their communication was awful). Just going to buy from my local GW next time.

I really like the game, the models, and the setting.

Three things:
My friends still play and it's a good way to socialise with them;
I've already got a few thousand points in each of 4 different armies;
I quite like the background universe and get inspiration from reading some of the Black Library novels.

However if my armies ever got lost/stolen I think I'd be unlikely to replace them. In fact I'd probably drop wargaming altogether for a few years (I've done this a couple of times since first starting wargaming in the eighties).

Every so often I “rage quit” the game, sometimes after a bad tournament, sometimes after a bad codex (*cough Tyranids cough*). I’ve been playing this game since 1998, and the engrossing background fiction and beautiful models always draw me back in even when i try to branch out. I’ve spent money on X-Wing, Attack Wing, Hordemachine, Battletech, and Magic: The Gathering…..but I’ve spent a lifetime on 40k.

I've been gaming for 30 years (RPGs), and playing Miniatures Wargames for 22 years.

I have often wondered if a drug habit would have been financially cheaper...

And at the rate GW games cost keeps increasing, Cocaine might be even cheaper now. ;D

Why do I continue to play 40k/Fantasy? I like the models, the settings. I think it also comes down to the fact, there still isn't a game for Sci-fi or Fantasy yet that comes close to matching the playstyle of either game. If a company released a game that scratched the exact same itch that both games do, I would switch in a heartbeat.

Sadly nothing is keeping me going. GW priced me out. I was waiting for GW to release a new Ork codex before starting them. The prices kept me out. Lack luster releasee schedule, as well as boring, I just saw it wasn't Worth it to start. Nobody plays in my area anymore, all I do, is just dust off everything I bought ages ago, and just try to finish it off now.

So my gaming is now with my son with Xwing and Attack Wing. Trying to play 40K again, but we are making home brew rules now to make the game fun again.

Nowadays I dont'n play because my miniatures are in Spain...but the only things that keep me in this are my blog and the amount of points I have. Most of my miniatures are second hand miniatures.

Several things keep me hanging on:
1.I have an awesome, albeit small, gaming group. We play the game for fun and never run the same lists twice.
2.7th Edition is perfect for the way I play. As long both players don't act like dicks or run cheesy lists, the game has never been better.
3. I have started collecting WW2 and Napoleonic miniatures and running them as imperial guard. Nothing is quite as fun as charging a unit of fire warriors with fifty fusiliers while screaming "For Space France!"
4. I haven't had to buy from GW for the last decade. I have become a master of ebay and proxying.
5. I'm probably one of the few who likes what GW has done with 40k over the last few years. The only thing that keeps me from buying from them is the outlandish prices and that Fantasy (my first and truest love) has been seemingly left to die.

I realise with my TotalWargamer Rant [Whom I visited and can confirm still exist, though the shop makes Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard look positively burgeoing] I didn't actually answer why I still game.

1. To WIN. - That's right folks, when my angels of death land on the table, they come to destroy and table you. This is why I play. Yes I enjoy games I lose, No I don't cheat or act like the proverbial "Neckbeard" but I play to win because winning is fun.

2. I love the fluff. This is very important, it keeps you going when you haven't played for awhile or can't be bothered to paint up yet another bolter marine ( 656 to go...)

3. The models. These are fantastic, really, look at them, when I got my stormraven kit I was like "woah! this is more complicated then some airfix kits". They are fantastic.

4. The game. Winning or losing. I like the game, (I prefer to win, see #1), I like the cunning interactions, out thinking my opponents, or seeing that I have just taken the mother of all baits exposing a unit to a previously unforeseen circumstance. Yes the rules can be clunky at times and that is annoying

5. Longevity, I have been playing for far too long. I have quite the amass of miniatures and consequently it becomes quite cheap to update the army to the new rules/codex. Though the twin FOC made for an expensive month. Being a collector though I don't mind as it is all part of my ultimate plan of collecting a chapter.

6. My mates play it. Now this is very important. You could find the best game in the world but if no one plays it it is useless. So the fact that it is popular keeps us going.

Investment (painting, converting,...) and background are the main reasons which where always strong enough to overcome the downsides. But nowadays this seems to get less and less of a "game saver" for me...

Even better when spoken aloud with a thick accent… ;)

I keep gaming because I’m a fanatic. It’s fun to go to tournaments and play against new/old foes but I really love bringing the models to life by converting/painting.

Alas! Alas! I am forlorn. Though if I don't get a full refund within EU guidelines I will be back with the Doomhammer and maybe a complaint to the regulatory body.

I am new player, so I haven't really had a chance to burn out. The lore is really what got me hooked. Regardless of the price or rules, the lore is so fascinating I just can't get enough.
