ok so i tried out the manticore against my brother's orks and it did really well. the fact that it can drop up to 3 s 10 ap 4 templates really puts holes in a horde army. anyways i really want to field an actual model of the manticore (since i proxied it with a lego of a star wars hellfire droid) but i cant afford forgeworld so if anyone can give me ideas for an alternative model or conversion that would be great

I heard somewhere that the missiles from a Valkyrie kit work well for the missiles, all you'd need then is a chimera chassis and some kind of turret.

For mine, I bought a whirlwinds and used the turret with 4 missiles. The whirlwind became a rhino and life was good. It looks boxy enough, has 4 missiles, and the only issue thus far is that I need to track how many are left since I can't just remove them. Easy, almost zero conversion work (I used a magnet in the chimera, and one on the turret, so i can even go and use it as a normal chimera when I want, then just slap the whirlwind turret when its manticore time.)

Take a look here:

The hellstrike missiles from the Valk kit worked perfectly and it was easy for me because I bought 2 Valks and thus had the 4 missiles I needed.

Based on a Basilisk Chassis, using a G.I. Joe Wolverine Missile Box and SnowCat Missiles.

Happy Converting!

You could also try the old Whilwind model missles. they would be very easy to convert into a manticore IMHO

Thing is, once you've bought any of the above things, you probably could have afforded the forgeworld manticore.

Chimera + whirlwind > FW manticore
Chimera + 2xvalkyrie > FW manticore
assorted toys + basalisk > FW manticore

if you're going for cheap, I suggest finding some "missile shaped" objects, or some material that you can carve/mould into missiles, scratchbuilding a turret out of cardboard (plasticard if you have any) and putting something together.

If you are unconcerned with 100% GW official plastic (as I am not), Old Crow can be your best friend.

This turret, for example...

Yes, but you forget that in that case he has 2 models for the price of one (three in the case of chimera + 2 valks).
