How do?
It's tradition, and I haven't seen a comparable thread for X-Wing yet. So started this one, natch.
I write this on Thursday 26 June 2014, having firmly decided to dive into X-Wing the preceding Sunday, 22 June 2014.
My first purchase was a bit random. Mostly stuff and ships I recognised and were my favouites. So Core Game, additiona X-Wing, Hwk-290 (got a deal on it with the Core Game), an A-Wing a TIE Bomber and 2 x TIE Interceptors. Seemed to be enough to be going on with.
Then, lawks help me, I got bitten. Next day, whilst browsing at work I managed to order 2 x TIE Phantoms, and 2 x E-Wings, just because.
Yesterday? And I'd like to point out I've spent around £120 so far, and haven't even played....Tantive IV was ordered off Amazon, after a local gaming chum spotted it for a piffling £40.07.....
And that's where I'm up to at the moment. Now, I know I'm not the only one recently started out down the X-Wing path, so feel free to join in. If my Core Game order shows up tomorrow (it's being delivered second class, which is fine because it's dead cheap!) I should be breaking my duck at the weekend!

Picked up the Core set and a HWK-290 on June 21st. I took the hit and now have a standing Rebel Fleet of 1x HWK-290, 2x X-Wings and 2x Z95 Headhunters.
Might end up taking my first game tonight with some friends who bought the Core, Falcon and Slave some time ago. So we'll see how that works out. Really liking how cost effective the game is though. I'm about $110 (CAD) into it so far and already have enough to game with. Less than my Knight and I've already started a new miniatures game. $200, and I can pull off a force for both sides. Neat!

Now home, and cracked open on of each of the fighters (Tantive IV should now be delivered tomorrow, too many receptions in the building I work in, confused the driver!)
Got to say, I am highly impressed with the packaging. The ships, as with all small miniatures are fairly fragile. The packaging holds each ship nice and snugly, but once opened, there's no having to prise the model out it's little plakky coccoon. They just drop out. Very, very impressed with that. I know it sounds a bit poncey to praise packaging, and perhaps even a little fanboiesque, but seriously, it's a good little bonus! I'd hate to have spent my money, and then have to risk breaking my new acquisitions off the bat!

Hi, I've lurked on BOLS and Warseer for a while but I thought this thread would be a good place to start!
I've just got in to X Wing; gave the core set a try after watching a battle report on BOLS and was hooked. Star Wars was my first introduction to Sci fi and I've always loved the films and the x wing series of PC games.
Aa far as tabletop goes I mainly a GW hobbyist. I don't really game but that's mainly because I grew up in the old skool hobby centre where everything had to be painted - no naked plastic. I love painting models and terrain but am very slow at it and don't get much hobby time a month so I have the odd small game or two each year.
This is why X Wing got me interested - no initial hobby time commitment, low entry cost and fluff I enjoy. After playing a couple of games with the core set I quickly went out and bought another copy to start my fleet and add the extra dice.
Must say at the moment I think the mini tie swarm has a definite advantage over my couple of x wings but I guess new models will even the score a little.
I was planning on adding wave 1 minis this month but after seeing on BOLS the deal on Tantive IV I couldn't resist and ordered it yesterday for £45. (thanks whoever pointed this out!)
Really like the game mechanics and simple rules; a breath of fresh air from 40k and wfb (although I consider these to be awesome games with amazing fluff)
I do wonder if x wing will be able to hold the attention longer term in the same way as gw games with the scenarios and modeling options. Seems primarily geared to competitive play which I've never tried. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Cheers
Dan

Just had my first game and my biggest regret is that I haven't started playing this game sooner.
I took Biggs, Red Squadron Pilot, Tala Squadron Pilot with Ion Missiles (2X) and a HWK Rebel Operative with the Blaster Turret. My friend took 4 Ties (Mithil, Dark Curse, Night Beast and Black Squadron) and Kath Scarlet.
I managed to kill off Dark Curse and almost nailed the Black Squadron Pilot (I managed two Crits and a hit, and he evaded all three with just dice. No focus or evade. I shook his hand afterwards. I ain't even mad.) He killed off the Headhunters first as planned, but I failed to follow through and lay down enough firepower and capitalize on the distraction.
That was a really good lesson in keeping your other ships in coherency to focus fire. In the end, the other ships were picked off until Biggs just failed to avoid a volley from Kath and it was over. The overall damage was impressive for the first game though. A single volley of fire from the X-Wings could've finished off anyone but Night Beast by games end. Scarlet was down to 2 Hull Points, as was Mithil and the Black Squadron Pilot was at 1.
My friend seems to have mastered manoeuvering with Night Beast as that tricky bugger consistently avoided my crosshairs.
The game was fantastic and I am thoroughly pleased. I'm sad I have to work during the League game day on Saturday, but I can see another ship in my near future. Thanks for the advice everyone, I'm here to stay!

I've been playing since January so I have a fair few ships now.
Rebel Ships. 3 X-wings, 2 A-Wings, 2 Y-Wings, 2 B-Wings, 1 YT 1300, 1 Rebel Transport, 1 E-Wing
Imperials. 5 Tie-Fighters, 4 Imperial Aces Interceptors, 1 Tie Advanced, 1 Shuttle, 2 Firespray, 2 Tie Phantoms, 1 Tie Defender.
We usually play the standard 100 pt games but as we've all got the bug and a fair few ships now we've also tried much larger 300 pt games as well. I will be honest as fun as they are 100pts for me is the way I like to play the most. The games are quick to play and we can usually get 3 of 4 in an evening.
We only play the straight up kill the opponent games, but I'm itching to play all those missions that come with the larger ships and the core set. They look really fun.
I think the games balance is the best I've come across and whilst I am an Imperial player for the most part, I'm happy to play Rebel too.I think straight out of the core set on its own the x-wing has the edge over the two tie fighters, but once you start upping the points and adding to your collection things really even out.
All the ships have something to add to a game but I think the two "weakest" I've come across are the tie Advanced and the HWK. They aren't useless by any means but there are better ships. But Darth Vader comes in the Tie Advanced expansion, so a must buy really anyway :D
I haven't given up entirely on 40k, and I still enjoy painting the models. But my gaming time has been taken over by this game now and it's low price and free rules in comparison to other games is making it more and more popular in my group. The most popular now easily and we only started in January.
I love that I can play this game with my kids too, Imogen's 7 years old and a Rebel player, it didn't take her long to work out that Chewbacca flying the Falcon is a very good combo and regularly beats my face with him.
Oscar has just turned 4 so is still a little young to actually play but is just happy sitting with me and helping me manoeuvre my ships and roll some dice.
After all said and done, it's Star Wars and we all love it.

Getting new people to play X-Wing is soo easy. Let them play one game, and they're hooked. The game is so much fun. That's why a lot of people play X-Wing at my store.
I do wonder if x wing will be able to hold the attention longer term in the same way as gw games with the scenarios and modeling options. Seems primarily geared to competitive play which I've never tried. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Fantasy Flight Games is very very careful about balance to keep the game very competitive. But a balanced game helps casual play a LOT! (The thing many people don't get when TOs try to balance out WH40k with their own rules.) You know what i hate most about 40k? Not being able to play the unit I like most in style and fluff because it sucks. There is no such thing in X-Wing.
Casual play is awesome with X-Wing. Just fly whatever you want and you'll still have a good shot at winning. We play tournaments but we also play casual all the time. 50 points, 125 points, epic games, 300 points monster brawls, huge or more asteroids, minefields, custom szenarios, szenarios from the core game or expansions... Every single game has been a lot of fun so far.

What's nice to see is the x-wing player base growing, here on BoLs it's predominantly 40k, and that's cool. But I think x-wings another great game and chatting to online mates about the ins and outs of a hobby is great fun. I am a member of FF X-Wing forum too, but BoLs has a real sense of community and I look forward to chatting more X-Wing with my fellow BoLsters.
I think X-Wing is here to stay :D

06-27-2014, 02:23 AM
I do hope so.
Just hope they don't try jumping any sharks. There's dozens of existing fighter designs out there as is, so should be a long way off. But if they started doing Ltd Ed stuff with pokey cards of pokeyness, I think I'd get a bit miffed. Unless it's a unique sculpt of ship, and the cards themselves are released separately to mere mortals :)

I have kept quite long enough. My Name is CJ.....and I am a Star Wars Junkie. I got into X-Wing for 1 reason. The minis. They are like plastic gold. Holding one in my hand, is lke a fat kid with a huge plate of meat and potatos. OK not really but still you get where I'm going with this. Unless you are a vegiterian. LOL
But in all honosety. I haven't played a single game yet and I have a Starter and 1 of everything up to wave 3. I just made a purchase for an E-Wing and B-Wing yesterday and they are in route as we speak. My ultimate goal is to have at least 1 of every ship. Including Imps. I was a huge collector of the Wizards of the Coast minis but what lacked in that game was the support. FF has taken a great deal to make this game easy, attractive as well as fun.
We have a great pressence here in the Cincinnati area. My issue is that I live on the West side and the game store that really has a good hold on this game is over 50 minutes away on the other side of the City. And it sucks. SO, trying to recruit my 40k brothers in picking this up as a second game. Fingers crossed that the force is with me in converting them over to the dark side.
Either way, I'm in to stay. I'm already making purchase plans to pick up the missing pieces from the waves and make my purchase for the Tantive IV and transport.
As for the futue of the game?
Seriously.....anyone hear about the 3 new movies coming out????? And we still have all of I-III they haven't even touched yet!
X-Wing is here to stay for uite some time. I recommend hitting YouTube and watching battle reports and just see if any of your local FLGS's have demo's. 1 game and you are sucked in. In my case, the mini's sucked me in...lol

It is nice to see a Star Wars game that for once, doesn't trade entirely off it being a Star Wars game. FFG have clearly put a lot of thought into this game, and the products.
And I remain interested to see how they keep things fresh. Releasing new ships is always fun, but then there's always the risk that some waves will just be better, or indeed worse, than the earlier ones, leading to potential redundant model syndrome. But no sign of that at present!
Tyrendian
06-27-2014, 06:47 AM
there isn't much to do with "unique sculpts", is there? I mean the fighters themselves are more or less set... And unique paintjobs are already being covered in both Aces packs (and the Rebel Transport one afaik?), though there may be event-exclusive ones at some point... who knows? But what keeps you from just immitating them then?
Mr Mystery
06-27-2014, 06:51 AM
Well indeed, as long as the cards are made available, or it's literally just a different style/colour of ship. Then you know, cool :)
It's also me worrying over precisely nothing at this point :)
ksoh75
06-27-2014, 06:55 AM
I'm not worried. And it's not like we are buying into cases of Blind packs either with this game. You know what you are buying and you know whats in the blisters.

I've taken to doing a few repaints, just my Firesprays to start with. Nothing too dramatic but when I do run both in one game I like that they look like the ships on the cards instead of both having the Slave 1 paint job.
I'm interested to see if they add any more factions, either pirates or bounty hunters are of course an easy option. How say you ?
Tyrendian
06-27-2014, 07:34 AM
there's nothing really keeping you from playing Pirates/Mercs in friendly games as is... I mean TIE Fighters are incredibly ubiquitous, as are Z95s and to a lesser extent even X and Y; add to that basically all Large ships and you could happily mix and match (changing the names of the pilots obviously or even creating new ones) to represent a decently well equipped band of mercs... just try not to cherry-pick too much and I for one would be more than happy to play against something like that... waddayouthink?

@Deadlift, do you re-prime the mini's? Or do you repaint straight onto them? I want to repaint my X-Wing's black with red accents.
Mr Mystery
06-27-2014, 08:18 AM
Yeah I'd be up for that.
Especially say a fleet of Z-95s and other 'outdated' ships attempting a raid on a CR-90 or Rebel Transport. The Epic Ships could then have an escort of either faction.
Even if you insist that the pirates only have non-named pilots (so all XX Squadron pilot etc). Would be something different (says the man yet to actually play the game!)
Mr Mystery
06-27-2014, 08:35 AM
And speaking of the CR-90, guess what I just collected from the post team! Woop!

I primed the 1st one which was a good as it was a complete re-paint, but the 2nd one I didn't bother and the paint went on just fine. No issue with paint sticking at all, and I used GW paints too.

what I kinda wonder is if we will see the same pilot on different ships some day (and not only as Crew options, as happens to like half the cast at the moment)... best examples are probably Tycho and Corran, who feels kinda wonky being A-Wing and E-Wing "exclusive" so far, respectively...

And after a long journey home, the Tantive IV has been has been unboxed!
Sadly, it's time for pub now, so pics and that will have to wait until tomorrow.
It is a gorgeous model though. Stands are plenty strong enough to hold it up, and the footprint of the bases are steady as a rock. And once again, 'nuff respek to FFG for the packaging. All held nice and snug, but easy as pie to remove once you've cracked it open!

Looking forward to seeing some pictures , it looked like a beast on the preview video on YouTube. Mine has been dispatched so should get it next week. Childlike anticipation for that moment of unboxing :-)
this was a total impulse buy (50% off will do that!) given I only have the 2x core sets. How do you guys use the huge ships? Can you just play them in regular games with higher points? How do you kill a corellian corvette? (without a star destroyer)
I quite like the idea of some proper scenarios like in x wing and tie fighter games (can't figure out why these haven't been updated for modern consoles) for example the empire needs to disable the ship before it jumps to hyperspace and board it using a shuttle. That sort of thing. With reinforcements arriving on set turn numbers. Does anyone play in this sort of narrative way?
Deadlift
06-28-2014, 04:11 AM
You can use the bigger ships in 100pt games. They are not that points heavy surprisingly but still a little pricey. I only have the transport at the moment and it's fun to use as it augments your other ships nicely. But because it is a bit of a chunk on points your going to outnumbered always.
FF have also written that it can also be used as an obstacle in game, if you don't choose to play the huge ship it can still be placed on the board instead of 3 Asteroids. That's fun because it's quite a bit more dangerous to fly around than a bog standard roid.

I kind of like this one, but might not garner much favour:
Corran Horn (35), R5 Astromech (1), Marksmanship (3).
Tala Squadron Pilot (13), Assault Missiles (5), Munitions Failsafe (1).

3x X-Wings

now that I think about it... Rebel Aces will add Farlander to the Jedi mix, and technically (or rather technically not but while we're at it why not...) Leia "flying" the Falcon with Han (theoretically) on the guns (which is where his card text actually comes in anyway...)
now if only they weren't all so expensive... one would probably have to play 150pts+ to actually use a decently kitted Jedi Squadron... :)

Yup, and it will be interesting. I'm looking at slightly bigger games for this anyway. Granted you can have 100 pts work really well but I want to see 150 up to 200 pt games. Just think of all the upgrades and weapon systems and it can add up pretty quick anyway.

Had my first games on Saturday. Got absolutely trounced by the local league. First things that I have to focus on are realizing how I'm going to end my movement and to watch out for them damn asteroids. Then list building.
I played:
-Wedge Antilles, Red Sq. Pilot and Corran Horn
-Kyle Katarn, Garven Dreis and 2x Bandit Sq. Pilots
Both saw some success, leaving the opposing ships battered, some dead but ultimately was beaten by seasoned pros.
Picked up a Y-Wing on the way out and am trying this in my very next game:
Horton Salm, 2x Proton Torpedo's and Munitions Failsafe (37)
Luke Skywalker, R2 Astromech and Marksmanship (32)
Biggs Darklighter, R2-D2 and Flechette Torpedo (31)

Well, Biggs is going to be soaking up fire in a big(gs) way and having R2-D2 replenish his shields will really help keep fire off the other two for a lot longer. (Yes, I am sending R2-D2 to die. And it's here!
So without having played a single game, I now have......wait for it!
Rebels
2 x X-Wings (one expansion)
2 x E-Wings
1 x A-Wing
1 x HWK-290
1 x Tantive IV (seriously, £40, how could I not!)
And for the good guys?
2 x TIE Fighters
2 x TIE Interceptors
2 x TIE Phantoms
2 x TIE Bombers
1 x TIE Advanced.
And I've only just realised that it isn't a spare peg you get with your ships.....they double up. DERP!

And first two games under my belt!
First one was a straight up dogfight between me (two Academy Pilots) against him (single X-Wing, can't remember which one!). Dear god it's fun! Ended in a victory for the good guys, as I was able to get on the tail of the rebel scum, and just chip away at him, despite the early loss of one of my fighters.
Second, not so victorious :p introduced Asteroids, which seriously help the Rebelscum, as they limit where I can go.
Biggest thing to get used to is the movement ranges. 5 straight isn't as far as you might think!
Right up for more, and going round Mr Martypant's house on Sunday to introduce him to it!

How did you enjoy the experience, I know I enjoyed playing with the core set but the game really came alive for me at 100 pts.
The core set (or 2) are great for learning the mechanics but once you get stuck in with the game the different upgrade options open up a huge array of tactics. One card you will come to love is the "Push the limit" (PTL) card that came with the A-Wing. It can make for some very tricksy moves.
Mr Mystery
07-11-2014, 02:09 AM
Really, really enjoyed it.
Turns out I'm quite good at predicting what my opponent might be about to try, and I'm not afraid to 'turn and burn' if it get's my sweet bippy out of trouble. Also learnt The Empire needs to just chip away at X-Wings. Whilst it is possible for my dudes to take him out in a single pass, it depends on everything hitting, and the second dude getting a Crit, and that Crit being a Direct Hit......
Gonna keep it simple for now, and also going to reorganise my cards and that, sorting all the upgrades into like for like decks, ready for a couple of 100 point games round Martypant's place.
Oh, and first game took us about an hour, as I kept running away, and then nipped at his heels like a good Terrier!

Yes I prefer the Imperials too :D
Those K-Turns are great on the Ties, the Barrel roll too. I've not dug out my Phantoms yet but having read what the can do move wise whilst coming out of being cloaked has me intrigued.
Glad you enjoyed your 1st experiance of the game, it's no 40k replacement but it's a nice alternative especially if you've only got a hour or so to play a game.

Yup. Plus it's fun to be able to play straight out the box.
I do wonder how far they're going to go with it, but ultimately I don't care. Just in the 15 ships I own, I can mix and match plenty of variety into my lists!

I think the games here to stay for quite some time. It's exploded onto the gaming scene pretty much everywhere and each new wave is anticipated greatly by everyone I speak to. The new films will only add more material for FF to use I'm guessing and there is so much from the extended universe too. Wave 5 looks interesting with the addition of some more large ships. What I really want is some Imperial Huge ships.

I'm hoping for a Nebulon-B. I think that's about as big as they can realistically get.
So far I'm yet to find a duff ship, everything has it's niche. And the differing pilots are really cool!
Also - how come Y-Wings are pretty much universally sold out?? I wants a pair!
Krefey
07-11-2014, 02:45 AM
I don't see the Nebulon B getting a model. It would be about three times as big as the blockade runner and that has already been scaled down for the game.
Mr Mystery
07-11-2014, 02:50 AM
It's not that much bigger, between 1.5 and twice as big. (I will not use 'two times bigger', because that's appalling grammar, and overused in advertising, thank you very much!).
And model wise, it's thin dorsal frame makes it more feasible. Probably. Don't quote me on that :p
But the good guys do need their epic ships already!

Y-Wings are really good, especially with Ion Cannons. You will find this with X-Wing models, they go though phases of not being available until they get a re-print due to popularity. It's why I try to snap up the newer ships ASAP. Otherwise you could miss the boat and have to wait for the next reprint which could be a couple months away. It's one area FF fail IMO. They do struggle with supply and demand and some stockists take advantage of increasing the price of the ones they had. I remember earlier in the year seeing y-wings on eBay for £30.

Had him running with Target Lock upgrade thing (gives me a Target Lock on the defender after I've attacked) and naturally, Advanced Cloaking Device.
Man he's so flexible! Managed to pretty much keep out of my opponent's fire arcs all game, and ran all three of his fighters (X, E and A-Wing) to ground, with the other four ships (two TIE Fighters, two TIE Interceptors) helping to chip in.
Need to get more ships!

Just played my first games of X-wing last Saturday (July.13/2014) what a cool game! I picked up the starter box as well as a Y-wing, TIE Advanced and HWK-290 (this puppy was thrown in for free!) and a case of cold ones and we were off. The layout of the rulebook really eases you naturally into play and in a couple hours the arrows of its eyes had pierced my heart, and my pocketwad (That's the pocket of cash you use to buy plastic crack so you cant keep track of it and there never is a monthly statement, ensuring you will never know you have a problem). I then went on to spend the rest of the night pacing around the place, rubbing my hands together and mumbling about a grand fleet of the Empire.
Having spent most of my recent gaming time either playing epic day long games (Twilight Imperium im looking at you...), or games with so many rules upon rules that its hard to maintain momentum (ever had an opponent plop down a freshly finished Helldrake, laugh like a madman then proceed to ask you how flyers work?), it was a refreshing reminder that there are games out there that are just as collectible, just as tactful, and just as fun as any game that takes hella long to play.
Now I'm off to the local games store, think I need that second starter set...

Oh the sweet thrill of the hunt! Went to check on a little comic shop up the road, and in the very back display case (covered in clutter) I found them, the YT-1300 and the Firespray-31! Haven't been able to find these two yet, and the guy at the shop I was at yesterday told me they didn't make them anymore. On top of this all the figures at this wee shop were a couple bucks cheaper than at any of the other stores I have seen them in, so I picked up a TIE Defender, and an additional X and Y-wing to flesh out the terrorist side. Actually looking at my ships the Y-wing was two dollars more than the other ships, and it has a price tag underneath the top one, showing it was the same price before. Wonder what's up with that? Tomorrow I'm heading to my FLGS after work for X-wing night, may the Force be with me! (and to all my fellow BOLSers, just not to the degree it's with me!)

Yeah I believe it. Have had some issues with that particular store a couple times ( Completely screwed up a couple orders, say they re-stock there palladium books but nothing new has come in for ages [when I say new I mean copies of older print books not just new releases], that kind of stuff) I like to support local shops but they led me to the internet due to incompetence.
Well I never made it down to my store for X-wing night, ( Had one of our Bison farmers come in with an animal he wanted butchered for tomorrows market, didn't feel right in refusing just so I could go out and play; the outcome a long day) on the bright side that's all for the pocketwad! Getting set up to play a game against a neighbor so I can still practice my skills. My chosen units so far are Darth Vader piloting a TIE advanced, flanked by Winged Gundark and Howlrunner ( Darth is a must, my neighbor has beaten me every time with Luke Skywalker, Papa Vader needs to keep his pimp arm strong!), gonna get in close and hopefully close the deal on a ship every combat phase. Gonna keep the TIE Phantom out this round ( I desperately want to try it out, but I need to review cloaking first) but TIE bomber is in there for sure! Then I will fill the rest out with regular TIEs. He doesn't have his own models so will be using my "freedom fighters" 3 X-wings, 2 Y-wings, the HWK-90 and YT-1300 I don't expect much of a fight ( Though he did watch a video online with an unstoppable group of three X-wings, Luke, Biggs, and Wedge, R2-D2 and some extra shields). Long Live the Emperor!

There's a kanck to cloaking I've found.
And that knack is knowing your opponent has no more idea of where your ship is actually going to pop up than you do, so it doesn't matter a great deal! :p (no, really! Tried this with Echo and it worked really well!)

Great weekend, played some games and introduced a couple new people to X-wing I would call that a success. Played lots of little skirmishes, and a couple scenarios but the highlight was my 100 point game. My crew: Darth Vader in his TIE Advanced, Howlrunner palling around with him, Winged Gundark to the left flank of them, and Major Rhymer bringing up the right flank. This only gave me enough points left for a willpower on Vader, Daredevil for Howlrunner and a munitions failsafe, proton torpedo and cluster missiles. The enemy Luke Skywalkers X-wing with RD-D2 and marksman armed with proton torpedo(if I recall) and Han Solo in the Falcon, with Chewbacca, Nien Nunb, expose and a concussion missile. (I tried to talk him out of the Falcon, as it was both of our first time playing one hundred points) Things were looking good for me with Winged Gundark hitting Luke, and Major Rhymer unleashing the concussion missiles on Skywalker to leave the whiny B with a single hull point left! Luke squared off on his old man for a damage to shields. Then it happened (Call it beginners cramps) the Falcon plowed right down the line, colliding with Howlrunner and generally screwing movement and line of sight for both of us for a couple rounds. during those rounds the Falcon, in one round, blew the Gundark rout of the ... uhh sky. whittled down the falcons shields while Luke ran in the opposite direction to green manuvere his shields back. The next round saw a beauty of a combat against the Falcon, a critical hit causing it to lose an agility (his only agility)... until Chewie fixed it. After destroying the TIE-bomber the Falcon abruptly turned the wrong way and ran off the table. Rest was classic, Vader hit Luke, removing the shields R2 had restored, Luke killed Vader, and Howlrunner (having Daredeviled his Kloogurian turn) took Lukes last hull point. That was the gist, I will post my musings later because this is already super long.

had two brilliantly fun games on Saturday - one had me with Wedge, Biggs and Corran go up against 5 unnamed Ties of various types. At one point I had exactly three hitpoints left (two on Wedge and one on Corran, who had gotten wounded in the process costing me Push the Limit) against all of his ships, although some of them were damaged to differing degrees. Game ended with Corran taking his second shot of the turn killing an Interceptor that had Range 1 on me as well, so would probably have vaporised me in return - but jeez Corran is a late-game monster, especially with Advanced Sensors and Engine Upgrade meaning he can get away quickly to rest for a turn after taking his double shot...
The other was very small due to time constraints - just a decked out Whisper (and I mean really decked out... 45ish points just for the heck of it - after each attack I got a Cloak, Target Lock and Focus token, plus Gunner...) against two Rookie Xs. Well, Whisper led them on a merry chase, allowing them a few pot shots before turning about and one-shotting both of them, one after the other... man Phantoms are fun to fly!

Phantoms are great little ships!
They look brilliant, are fun to use, and so, much, DAKKA! Spesh at range 1!
Only downside is their relative fragility, with only two shields (no current way to restore that I'm aware of), and two hull you only need to be caught out once and it's curtains!

When you start picking restaurant based on it's proximity to gaming stores does it mean you have a problem? There's one just a block away from a great Sushi place, I think I may have subconsciously picked it so I could grab some ships.
They must sell more X-wing than I thought because all the B-wings, and Headhunters they had a few weeks ago were gone, I planned on getting one of each, so I buffed up my purchase with some Imperial Reinforcements.
All in all I walked out with an E-wing (Tight ship but expensive), a TIE-phantom TIE-advanced and a regular Tie-fighter plus the Imperial Aces (nice box, now I need to find some regular interceptors).
So here's my collection breakdown:
Rebel Scum:
X-wings x 3
Y-wings x 2
E-wings x 1
Hwk-90 x 1
yt-1300 x 1
Our boys in White:
TIE-Fighters x 6
TIE-Advanced x 2
TIE-Phantoms x 2
TIE-Defenders x 2
TIE-Bombers x 1
Lambda Shuttle x 1
Firespray x 1
Imperial Aces x 1
I plan to get two of everything eventually ( So that I can make all the choices that are limited by the double sided pilot bases), and three of everything Imperial ( Recall a wing of TIE's being three strong) and of course I need three of each of the ships that come with six pilot options. When I say two of everything that still means only one Tantive, I'm not that crazy.

Fleet update!
I picked up a YT-1300 today!
Fleet now sits at:
1x YT-1300
2x Z95 Headhunters
3x X-Wings
2x B-Wings
1x Y-Wing
1x E-Wing
1x HWK-290
I think after I pick up the Rebel Aces box when it comes out I'll start building a foil to my Rebels, probably starting with a pair of Tie Fighters and an Tie Defender.
There's open X-Wing gaming on Sunday and I'm definitely going to give the Falcon a whirl, but first I think a paint job is in order, I'm thinking of replacing the Red accents with Blue accents, or Yellow. Haven't decided.
Going to throw up pics in the fleet presentation thread right now!

Such a good day of games today! Four player X-Wing with 150 points total so each person picks 75 points worth of ships, played on a 4x4 board with a scattering of asteroids (I lobbied hard for those asteroids, evry game so far has had no obstacles).
The Breakdown
Rebels: Airen Cracken in Z-95 Headhunter with Homing missiles and Wingman
Wes Janson in X-wing with Marksmanship Proton Torpedos and R5-P9
Outer Rim Smuggler in YT-1300 with Gunner and Navigator
Horton Salm in Y-wing with Flechette Torpedoes, Proton Torpedoes, R2-D6, Marksmanship and Ion Turret
I seperated the force to show who picked which ships for the team, they also played those ships. Wes Janson and Airen Cracken worked really well together and were usually within range one of each other, or Horton Salm, with Cracken handing out free actions to Janson to turn into focus for R5-P9 to turn into shields at the end of combat (In fact through this action Janson the last ship of rebels standing at the end was still in full shields). Outer Rim Smuggler and a navigator was silly (Pilot skill of one but you can flip your dial to reveal the bearing but change the distance wasn't to effective when always moving first0.
Imperials: Bobba Fett in Firespray-31 with Slave one, Cluster missiles, Munitions Failsafe, Proximity mines and Rebel Captive
Obsidian Squadron Pilot in TIE-Fightersx2
Carnor Jax in TIE-Interceptor with Royal Guard TIE, Hull Upgrade and Targeting computer
Lieutenant Lorrir in TIE-Interceptor with the same as above
Captian Jonus in TIE-Bomber with Squad Leader and Heavy Laser Cannon
I Played the Fett man and the regular TIEs, Rebel Captive was awesome high pilot skills are always going to shoot first so the stress token seems to count more since it's going to a better pilot. Captian Jonus was a wash, I really wish I would have payed better attention to what my partner picked, and it wasn't until after the game I see that TIE-Bombers can't even take that Heavy Laser Cannon.
So after playing the first two turns wrong ( Pilots with highest skills were moving first, whoops. chalked that one up to left handers) Both Slave One and the Falcon had blasted into the asteroid field and were hammering each other good. I had planned to enter the asteroid belt and deploy my mine never expected the Falcon to fly in there too, it screwed up movement big time it would have been the end of me (down to 4 hull at this point) but luckily I used Fetts piloting ability to collide with two Wes Janson and Cracken, rather than the Falcon, preventing them from shooting me. Besides a couple of wrong manoeuvers (whoops meant to do this direction but chose the opposite) and Slave One spending three out of six turns colliding with an asteroid (The last one caused a Direct Hit and left the Fett with only one Hull point), it was an Imperial Blowout. Both TIE-Fighters stayed on the Falcon at all times (Best moment was a barrel roll that left the TIE with line of sight after the Falcon moved, nice) and we just prioritized targets. The Rebels on the other hand hammered Fett for the first two turns and then picked different targets (we did outnumber them) but to be fair they left him with a blind pilot card and then he hit an asteroid( all part of his sinister plan!!). Another great part was when Wes Janson was blown apart by the TIE-Bombers Heavy Laser Cannon, this has caused contention in the group, and a desire for a rematch, so maybe it was a pickled Herring all along.
Horton Salm caused the biggest argument in the game: When attacking at range 2-3 you may re-roll any of your blank results. He re rolled a blank and it came up blank again. He figured he should get another re roll, but that didn't make any sense in my head. If they wanted you to hit on a blank it would say may turn one blank result into a hit, what do you folks think?

well since this is the thread to be "showing" off our collections in, allow me to do so
The Noble Empire
7x Tie Fighters
3x Tie Interceptors (regular)
2x Tie Bombers
1x Tie Advanced
1x Tie Defender
1x Lambda Class Shuttle
1x Firespray 31
Rebel Scum
1x CR90 Corvette
1x YT-1300
1x HWK-290
4x X-wing
2x Y-wing
2x A-wing
2x B-wing
there are most definately plans for expansion.
For the Imperials i'll most likely double the number of Tie Fighters i have now, get another Tie Bomber, Defender and Advanced, get 2 Tie Phantoms, get the Imperial Aces set 3 times, get atleast 1 more Firespray 31, get the soon to be released decimator twice for sure and then wait for a huge Imperial ship to be announced like a Tartan Patrol Cruiser.
For the Rebels i'll be getting that big transport, the rebel aces set twice atleast, another 2 Y-wings, another HWK-290, the E-wing 3 times atleast and the same goes for the Z-95 Headhunter, and i want that new ship of theirs the YT-2400.
Then there are the newly announced Scum & Villainy faction to look forward to, god it's like plastic crack.
grumble will probably take me a couple months of dispossible income to get all this stuff even more if also actually take that planned vacation and i'm guessing my girlfriend will not appreciate me blowing her off to buy more plastic space ships. :p

Played in a local tournament today, and managed to go 1W-3L. Not fantastic, but I've still played less than 10 games so far. List was as follows:
-"Dutch" Vander (23) - R5 K6 (2), Proton Torpedoes (4), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Munitions Failsafe (1). 35 Points.
-Tala Squadron Pilot (13) - Concussion Missiles (4), Munitions Failsafe (1). 18 Points.
-Lando Calrissian (44) - Elusiveness (2), Millenium Falcon (1). 47 Points.
I had some success chaining together Dutch and Lando by keeping them close allowing Lando to give Dutch a free action, so I would usually focus him and then use the free action provided by Lando to acquire a target lock and then give Lando a target lock in return.
The one win was when I managed to nail a Firespray and Tie Phantom within two turns of each other and not losing a ship. (Full disclosure is that he was around the same skill level as me at this time.)
Worst loss was to another Rebel player using his ABC list (Airen Cracken, Biggs Darklighter and Corran Horn) and he just wiped me out using Corran and Airen to blow all of the shields off the Falcon in one turn. I nailed Airen, but was wiped out by Biggs and Corran.
Poor Tala Pilot was always the first to go.
Ahh well, I had some good moves and things are getting better, but it's back to the drawing board!

Imperial Aces (I have two now, is it weird I want two more?)

We Played Lengthwise on a 6x3 table.
Highlights of the game: I was large and in charge the first few turns, acquiring target locks for my bombers with my shuttle then giving focus to the bombers really was cool, though they never used the full array of weapons I gave them (even though I halved what they took last time), and once again I forgot to use Captain Jonus's ability all game. Dice were on my side though and soon the shields were depleted on most rebel ships( wide set up and early branching of into groups prevented me from my usual tactic of hammering a foe to death before choosing another target) with very little damage to my own eyeballs.
Half way through saw a cluster of collisions around the middle of the table, resulting in lost opportunity for attacks by me, which led to several TIE-Fighters receving damage. In the end it was my determination to hunt down Chewbacca that led to the turn around. I was gunning for that ship and my enemy new it, I should have focused on ships relative to combat instead of chasing the golden snitch and making my intentions obvious.
What I learned all in all:
-check your opponents build list! I was cheated gosh darn it! I'm going to build a roster sheet for this game, they are extremely useful in Warhammer.
-Lambda shuttle is better at buffing and debuffing than fighting. People are gonna gun for it because it's big (Rebel Prisoner all the way), but it's still best not to fly it without having your next three moves planned(or three of your opponents figured out). My next shuttle is going to have the following:
Colonel Jendon Lambda-Class Shuttle, Sensor Jammers, Anti-Pursuit Lasers, Rebel Prisoner, and the Title card: those have proven to weigh more than a duck.
-The "B" in B-Wing stands for boss, put some Sensor Jammers on there and wow.
-Bigg Darklighter's ability totally makes sense, kill the traitor!
I have won a single game out of my battles so far so maybe I am not the guy to give advice, I clearly need it. I am going to try out a TIE-Phantom next time heck, Mr. Mystery has been saying that since I found this beauty of a forum, but I could use some help, eh. Besides being less transparent in my moves what else can I do. Help me BOLSey Wan Kenobi, your my only hope...

I had my first X-Wing League day today, got in a pair of games before my on-call work phone sent me to work.
Was playing with the Rebel Ace, Nera Dantels for the first time, and dang, she is a solid hitter! I went 1-1 today with this list:
100 Points
Nera Dantels (26) Proton Torpedoes (4), Proton Torpedoes (4), Veteran Instincts (1), Munitions Failsafe (1)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12), Ion Pulse Missiles (3), Munitions Failsafe (1)
The list was a heavy hitter style list, going into that first enfilade with a lot of dice if it gets up close. I played the Bandit and Nera as flankers to my Dagger Squadron center, everyone focuses onto the highest priority threat, weathers the fire from high PS pilots and wipes out the threat. This almost worked perfectly in the first match, but I whiffed a few dice rolls against Wedge Antilles and the dirty rotter stayed alive and eventually cost me the game.
My second game, which I won, gave this list a little bit of validation. I used the formation correctly and blew Han Solo in the Falcon to pieces in 2 turns of heavy B-Wing fire. The pair of Red Squadron pilots were slippery enough and the game ended with Nera chasing down the final wounded Red Squadron Pilot and using the Target Lock to finally end him as I just got called into work.
I still need to deal with checking asteroid positions before I commit to movement, but I am getting better at it. I also need to tattoo (ACTIONS AFTER MOVEMENT) onto my hand, so that I will remember to do it every time.
I am so psyched to tune this list. Triple B-Wings puts the fear into your enemies eyes, try it, you'll see.

Just treated myself to some Rebel Scum.
This month, my naughty fleet expands with two Y-Wings, and a B-Wing (may get a further B-Wing later)....
sourced from www.boardgameextras.co.uk who I highly recommend. And they still appear to have B-Wings in stock, and not at ridiculous, scalper prices, but a very respectable £10!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away you mean? :)
going to get our group's collection of ships pretty much completed tomorrow - everything but the TIE/Adv will be available, most in reasonable quantities as well, as in, five TIE/F, three TIE/I and XWings, double B, A [hooray for ABBA squadron :D) and TIE/B and single copies for the rest - could probs use another Z95 or two and maybe another Y, but other than that I don't see us needing extra copies of existing ships too much

Nice.
I think this is a very good game for a club to run, simply because it's relatively cheap to get a decent selection of ships together, and for a NooB, they all fly largely the same (as in the basic versions don't have fancy pants rules unique to that ship).
Really need to visit the club more often, but I'm usually too pooped from work!

Word!
Top Tip for sharing - target lock tokens + loom bands = ease of finding pairs!
Saw this flagged up on Facebook, and bought some loom bands today (50p for 300 in Tesco) - and all target lock tokens now buddied up in my storage box.
Nice and easy!

Heeeey youuu guuuys!
Been a while since I posted anything, mostly because of a Redneck tendency to fear change (I am addicted to Internet, I was online almost every day) so I took a break from the computer to enjoy life's other pursuits (Ice fishing, Skiing, enjoying good food with good friends, Zombicide) but I'm embracing the computer age now. Even got myself a new camera (well new to me, anyhow)
Had myself a little photo shoot today...

Here is where they live for now, new shelves in a couple months
I am pretty set for ships(I think?)
Missing from the pics is the single TIE Interceptor I have. Two more and I will be happy camper.
With Scum soon to drop I wouldn't mind another HWK-90 and another Y-Wing or two, and of course I need another YT-2400 just to have two of everything.
I might have stopped posting for a bit but I never stopped reading, I have loved (even with all the magic ponies everywhere) this site since I read a thread about GW prices in Australia that turned into a guy talking about archery and two other people arguing over basically nothing. I am going to post more, because as it was described to me by a nerd who is big into Day-Z the internet is great because everybody contributes, if your just taking and not giving back your missing the point.

Well, as of (in theory) tomorrow, I'm back at X-Wing Numberwang, as I will own at least one of everything.
Got there last week with the procurement of the Transport and Lambda, but this morning Scum and Villainy hit the UK.
So off to www.gameslore.com I went, and ordered up two of everything, two more Scyk for good measure, and a third Most Wanted for a friend (because Gameslore do a sliding scale of discount up to 10%, so it made sense to tack onto my order, as it was at the 7.5% discount stage).
Should be here tomorrow, when I'll be as giddy as a kid in a candy shop. And I plan to get them all shot down by better players at my local club on Thursday!

I'm glad you guys are still here :-)
I've been concentrating on Mars Attacks for a while. I haven't played x wing for weeks, although I have been quietly expanding my collection. Anyway, it's our store tournament on saturday so I hope to play a couple of prep games beforehand - I squeezed the first in last night. There are going to be three (!!) phantom heavy lists, two with 3 x phantoms. As a counter i'm going for Fat Han and 3 x bandits. I've never spent much time "flying" large ships but enjoyed the experience immensely. A Han Solo-piloted falcon with C3PO and predator is lethal. I'm not sure how to get the best out of Z-95s. I usually go with X's and B's so Z's feel a little flimsy. Any hints/tips are gladly received.

Mystery I think he is playing Rebel Scum.
As far as Z-95s I cant get them to do much either, but I can say is the Y-Wing really knows how to pull up its pants and preform. I have read lots of talk aboot how action management has become important in this game and a Y-Wing with an Ion Turret will really deny your opponent his actions, no matter what fire arc he is in. With FatHan this isnt enough to win you the games so I guess the next step is to figure out how 2 Z-95's can take advantage of a ship with an ion token on it.
I just read phantom heavy, that means you need guys with a high enough pilot skill to shoot at the TIE-Phantoms before they cloak. I will have to take a look but if the Y-Wing pilots have to low ahh.. uh Pilot then he won't work. I guess the only cure to a Phantom List is really good rebel pilots!

Dirty Rebels!
Yeah, I have no advice. Despite being well into the game, I don't play as often as I'd like - main chance is the local club, but working six days a week with only Sunday off, by the time Thursday rolles round I'm usually pretty pooped, and prefer to stay in watching telly.
Still awaiting the arrival of my Scum and Villainy at the moment. Ordered on Monday, and no dispatch confirmation yet - either that or the email has gone awry.
Hopefully be here today or tomorrow!

They are going to take this...
Mystery I know you roll with those dogs! I am out here quoting cards and I have never played against a Phantom myself, but you are wise in the ways of the Phantom. come on Brah, share your stories.
Mr Mystery
02-26-2015, 01:01 AM
Seriously? Fly it like you stole it.
Echo can end up nearly anywhere, so you don't need a particularly cunning plan, and with 4 attack dice standard she can do serious damage, ensuring your opponent will react in a defensive manner.
But be careful - turreted weapons really take the sting out of Phantoms!
And have lots of chaff to go with. I managed Echo alongside two TIE Fighters and two Interceptors in my list.

Gonna hit the Local store and see if it has shipped, we don't have half the problems that America does with this port strike, but coincidence or not Our Railroad is on strike, hence my joke aboot dog sledding earlier.
If it does hit on time (and if like the Kingsmen movie I watched tonight, it always does) then I will mill around listening to nerds talk aboot magic cards. Find my models and jet.

Due to the shipping issues they won't hit the shelves here until Sunday so I guess my games day is becoming postponed until next week. I have a very specific ritual when unboxing new models and because its Scum copious amounts of Glitterstim and Booster Blue are called for. No deathsticks though. You ever notice when deathsticks are involved you end up in the bathroom listening to some guy spout on aboot how much he loves his kids (who he doesn't have custody of), and its gross in there and your nose is bleeding...
Yeah death sticks are bad...

It went well in the end. I played four games. In the two games vs phantoms Han was brilliant. I found I had to play him aggressively - "4" on the dial and boost to get behind the enemy, then use boost to stay out of arcs. It was all about PS9.
Hardest game was vs 2 x IG2000. Man they were hard to take down. I ended with a 13 point victory because I just managed to kill one before the hour was up. I think xxbb would have had no problem with them, however.
It was a good four games though. He may be fat these days, but Han can still cut it, as long as he shoots first.

Turrets are the bane of Phantoms.
As I long as they can freely arse about outside fire arcs, they're utterly deadly. Even a single turret can spell disaster!

So after reading through this thread (and some others) I decided to jump into X-Wing. My FLGS was having a sale and I decided that this game may be easier to get my friends to play as opposed to 40K. So after three trips to the store over as many days I now have the following:
1x starter set
1x x-wing
1x e-wing
1x rebel aces
1x imperial aces
1x TIE interceptor
2x TIE defender
1x Firespray (Slave 1)
It really started cause the shop owner gave me a Slave 1 to go towards replacing some of my Boba Fett collection I lost in a fire (it's a really nice mini and looks good on display). After that I decided to jump in an start to play.

Sounds like a nice starting bundle Horncastle, like how you got the TIE-Interceptor as well as the Imperial aces, that means you get Baron Fel to lead your Interceptors. I have many a friend who won't touch 40k but will play this.
And they do look great on display! I have a bunch of Star Wars action figures in storage (Mostly ships, but some other cool stuff too) and now its like why would I hang up an X-Wing fighting off some TIE-Fighters from my ceiling when I have these little ones with proper scaling that look great and are part of a game. Now they are hella logical and you look like so much less of a nerd!

Looks like I am replying to myself AGAIN (well at least I am good company)
Pretty much done with my scum now13975139761397713978
Final Scum Count:
M3-A Interceptor x6 I started with 3 and quickly picked up 3 more when I noticed how quick they were flying off shelves; and good on me! These babies pack a whallop. basically a cheap cannon mount
Z-95 Headhunter x4 All from Most Wanted, one has a tip missing from its gun at first I hated it but now I think it's suitably scummy
Star Viper x3 It's tight but you can do three for 100 points
Y-Wings x4 Two are Most Wanted the others are just Y-Wings but I did purchase them just for the scum (I even threw the Rebel dial away, What do you call Rebels when scum becomes a better word?)
HWK-90 x2 Again because of Most Wanted, two sets mean two scum HWK-90 dials, plus they are pretty wicked cool with the scum build in rebels I always ended up using it as an extra Ion turret platform. That's all the Most wanted Dials used up except the Firesprays.
Firespray-31 x2 Boosh! Can't wait to try out the bomb guy
IG-2000 x3 I know I said I would get four of these before Armada but you never want to collect ALL the pieces of the puzzle right away (Now I have an excuse to go back to the game store!).
Well that's everything. Basically two Most Wanted worth of ships (Gotta fill those dials!) and some other scums. Now if the Raider would just hurry up already...

Starting to catch up my X-Wing minis, its been a while since I bought anything but Scum .
Just wanted to comment on the new starter pack and the First Order TIE and X-Wing T-70. Unlike the first box set and the subsequent TIE Fighter and X-Wing the pilots and ability cards in the new starter are the same as the ones in the boosters. If your not keen on having a pile of ships then you might as well just get a new starter or two, it comes with BB-8 while the Booster X-Wing doesn't

So after the initial running myself into asteroids things were looking pretty dark. The Baron had taken two hits from asteroids and the Syks took down backstabber in the third round, but by the time they had killed Turr off (I would like to point out by this point I had inflicted one point of damage to one ships shields) Fel had returned from his table edge (long story short I failed a koorigan turn and had to do another the turn after putting him out 8 instead of 5).
Man once Fel gets on the enemies trail that's it! Barrel rolls and boost actions combined with push the limit and Fels card ability let me stack a target lock and a focus token on him and at range one he iced a Syk a turn with no retaliation! Chaser finished the last one off for match.
Match highlight goes to Backstabber and the Tansari Veteran. after taking an ion blast the veteran hit him with a crit causing stunned pilot. knowing I was hooped the Veteran moved forward, then I made my ion move of 1 forward, hit him and promptly blew up!
Fel is my man of the match, though the ion blasts got him down for a while (forgot that ion movement is a white manuever and you don't burn your stress) but man oh man push the limit on him is great. looking forward to flying him again...
