I would modify this a bit for later iterations, but this requires a tiny bit more in terms of your paint range- Get a dark chrome like paint on the base before adding the egg shells, then use clear paints for the red and yellow. Alternatively you can use a sort of windshield tint spray that is easily found in different brands to darken it a bit, but still have that shiny effect that will make it seem to glow internally. Then after painting the egg shells black, I'd go for satin or even gloss, since it's supposed to be glass down there. Though that would complicate things if you're going for OSL.
