View Full Version : A Great British Holiday

How do?

Looking to get my holiday on at some point. Not been on a proper one for aaaages (trips up to Scotland to see folks don't count. Too stressful).

And I want to stay within the UK, as we've got an awful lot to see before I need go abroad (Skara Brae predates Pyramids I believe?).

Anyone got any recommendations? I love Torquay, having holidayed there as a child and utterly destroyed the arcade X-Men with my Bro. I want a taste of local culture, cuisine and booze. That's what I be after!

York. It has a railway museum.

Think I've been there in my younger years, and yes, Railway Museum is ace.

Also been to.....Nottingham, Northampton, Manchester, Stockport (working for GW on most occasions).

I want new and interesting experiences! Secret, little known museums (there's a Witchcraft one I'm desperate to see) unusual historical attractions (local one I found on a random drive? Henry VIII's old hunting lodge, where he stayed whilst pursuring Anne Boelyn's affections). That sort of thing!

I like Bath, lots to see and do. Nice restaurants too.

Torquays not what it used to be, well unless you like your cocaine and heroine. Its not that bad really but I just see it as a run down resort now full of piss heads and druggies on a Saturday night and old people the rest of the time.

The town itself has really suffered in the recession. The harbour side is still nice and of course theres the Zoo in Paignton and Kents Cavern in Torquay amongst other attractions. Me I can't wait to get the **** out of here now. But then I've lived here all my life.

I second Bath, and Lyme Regis is very nice. Also Buckfastleigh because they have the abbey, a butterfly sanctuary and the railway - but most importantly lots of otters!

Looks like I'll be heading South West.

Might even do a road trip type thing. Pack up a rental car, incluing a tent, and just potter around, see what there is to see at my own pace.

Plus, aforementioned Witch Craft museum is down that way I think.

Plus theres Buckfastleigh Tonic Wine made by the Monks, we know how the Scots love a bit of Bucky.

Ah ah ah. Glaswegians like a bit of Bucky. And meths. And petrol. And gassed milk. And indeed anything to take their mind off the fact they're Glaswegian. :p

you could try Hastings, got a lovely ruined castle, built by old William the 1st, a sea life centre though nowhere near as good as Londons one I assume, the old haunted Smugglers tunnels complete with museum, a few miles out each way and you have Eastbourne and Brighton on e way and Camber Sands the other way....

Ah Camber sands, once went on holiday down there while at my first boarding school, the beach is amazing, you can walk out almost a mile across nothing but sand when the tide is fully out, there's a holiday camp nearby the beach which is where we stayed, later on at my second boarding school went there quite often, as the school was in St-Leonards-on-Sea, right next door to Hastings.

Done Hastings to death - I'm just up the line in Tunbridge Wells.

Camber Sands is pretty cool.

Psh, you want castles, Warwick Castle, Kennilworth Castle, Woeley Castle, Tamworth Castle, Maxstoke Castle, Castle Ring (iron age fort), Astley Castle, Cauldon Castle not to mention the Fort

Ambleside in the Lakes is nice, and it's a pretty good spot to go do everything else in the lakes too (though obviously you'll need a car for it).

If you do let me know, I live in Taunton and we've a great museum here based in the town's castle. I can show you the local Games Shop too. Be great to meet another BoLS'er.

No no no... just no. If you want Castles, then go to Wales. There's more castles per square mile there than anywhere else on the planet! Some really impressive ones too like Cardiff, Caerphilly, Beaumaris, Conwy, Harlech and Caernarvon. Could actually make a touring holiday of it around the coast as most of them were built to secure the valuable coastal lands which had excellent grazing and ports. Lots of other things to see too, like the Roman legion camp at Caerleon, the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff, Anglesey (ancient centre of the Druids power). And there's loads of Welsh food/drink to sample and enjoy too if you're a foodie like Welsh Cakes, lots of cheeses and ales, Merlyn (A welsh liquor similar too, but better than Baileys) and more.

Three problems with Wales, firstly wales, secondly the rian, and thirdly horrific beer.

Then every historical aspect is all about the rebellions, or John Perrot

oh I don't know, Merlin was said to have been Welsh, plus they gave us the Long Bow, without it we'd have all been speaking French....

You said it yourself in your opening post - Orkney. Skara Brae is just the tip of he iceberg for cool historical stuff. There are lots of Stone Age monuments, a Viking cathedral, and some WW2 stuff. Then there is the stunning scenery and plenty of wildlife to see. I highly recommend everyone go there

If you're heading SW I recommend Bovington Tank Museum and Monkey World.
They're right next to each other!
But I'm a tread-head, and who doesn't love gibbons.
Plus with Monkey World the guilt level is massively reduced because they're all rescued from far worse!

Can we cull them all at the next foot and mouth crisis?

They were still removed at various safari parks at the height of the outbreak

How odd.

Wildeybeast

Not really. Defra's default response to any livestock based health crisis is to obliterate a random species on spurious scientific reasoning. I think they have big wheel in the office which people can put their least favourite animal on and the employee of the month gets to spin it to see which one they cull.

Darren Richardson

if you really want to stop an outbreak of foot and mouth, cull the stupid humans who don't clean themselves up after going to the farm fields who help spread it, that WILL work :D

Whats scary is you can imagine them actually working like that.
