Long time lurker here, just wanting some advice on creating an army for the first time.

I've just moved to New Zealand, I'm just out of uni and I'm finding that with the lack of job and study commitments right now I have some time on my hands to start a proper army. I've always been into the hobby side of things, and the lore, but I feel that the time is right to commit to the gaming side of this whole malarkey. Now, I've got my eye somewhat trained on a Minotaurs themed army - mostly because I thoroughly enjoyed painting the Asterion Moloc and Ivanus Enkomi models and because I got a pretty sweet deal on the Strike Force Ultra pack, the one with 20 terminators, a LR Crusader, Stormraven, Ven Dread and that limited edition termie captain. I plan on throwing the captain on eBay, not a huge fan of the model and limited edition models seem to go for a pretty penny.

Any thoughts or ideas on where to start? I have a copy of the latest SM codex, so should I just start with working out the points cost of all the units I have so far and build up/strip down from there? I feel silly asking, but is there a better way of starting out?

Part of the reason I'm starting now is also because with the change to 7th ed I feel like I will be learning the rules at a similar time to a few others so I will hopefully not be the only one asking questions all the time at my local store. Before I get my army to the store though, could someone explain to me the whole unbound thing?

Thanks for plowing through my long-winded introduction to the lounge!

Hello and welcome aboard!

As to where to start, I would say probably work out the points of what you have and play a game with it. If you have a local GW store then go in and they do (or did) starter games that teach the basic game mechanics. With the new edition just being realeased I imgaine they will be doing quite a number.

Then after that you have really have three options.

1. Pour through the codex and work out what you think the best army combination is and get them
2. Pour through all the literature and build up an army that best represents the fluff of the minotaurs
3. Buy what looks cool and incorporate it into your army

:)

The bound/unbound thing relates to how an army is composed.

A bound army (or whatever the proper term is) is an army that is formed from traditional force organisational chart (FOC) e.g 1-2 HQs, 0-3 Elites, 0-3 Fast Attack, 0-3 Heavy Support and 2-6 Troops. So your Captain, Asterion Moloc and Ivanus Enkomi would be HQs, Terminators are elites etc. This sort of army gains some bonuses as laid out in the rule book. An unbound army ignores the FOC.

Haha, thanks guys! And thank you Wolfshade for that advice of just going with whatever appeals, that's so much simpler than overthinking each units effectiveness from this stage.

I am a great fan of the "rule of cool", if I think it is cool then it is all good.

Unfortunately, I thought a chapter of Blood Angels would be cool, then I thought oh, it would be cool to have a larger imperial guard army to act as a planetary defence force, then I thought, oh this is a lot like the battle for armageddon so thought I needed an equal size ork army, which got me thinking of the first war gor armageddon and got me thikning of chaos and grey knights....or at least that is the plan...

Which is a perfectly reasonable plan, assuming the grey knights are only for looking at.
