Do Old models pass from oh, these models suck, etc etc etc. to Hmm, thats an old model and It looks unique?

I Have a bunch of old plastic Arrer Boyz, and an Old Wraith Lord. And Neither seem to get much attention, but other people's old models seem to get alot of attention

Unfortunately some models will be forever rubbish no matter how old they get although some good models do get better with age as the become more distinctive from what's currently available. For example I have an all metal genestealer hybrid with an autopistol and sword that looked good within it's range when it was available and is really distinctive now that few people have seen the model.

Generally the trend seems to be that each generation of models is better than the last (otherwise why would they replace them - but there are exceptions) so usually older models stay bad.

I never understood the "OOP! RARE!" auctions on eBay, since almost all of the old models sucked.

However, I noticed a couple years ago that my Librarian has gone out of production... which is pretty sweet, in a way, 'cause it still looks great but is a rare sight at my LGS.

I think it depends on what it is and why...I started an IG army a while back and would like to get some of the old girl guard. I'd like them in my army, but they haven't been updated... even though if they were they'd probably look better now than they did then. They are cool (to me) not because of oop, but because of what they are.

General rule of thumb: Jes Goodwin sculpted it? It's still cool.

Depends on the model and it's significance. Some older character models have that " Classic " designation while ordinary models usually usually don't.

Some models with be forever young, other will always be awful.

It totally depends on the model. Cypher = Cool while other models are just bad sculpts. I think its a combination of a cool sculpt combined with it being oop which means that there are a good amount of people who have never see it so it adds some uniqueness to the model.

Pretty much all the old sculpts are junk... Especially the Egg on Legs

I've been using the old Commisar Yarrick model recently, and it doesn't have near the same style of the newer figures, but he still commands a strong feel. He's designed in that 2 dimensional style needed for single piece models when molding (his back pole is separate though). The newer model is far more dynamic with much more detail, but to me, not nearly as cool.

wow... that's um well... some people need to date more if they're pickin up that stuff...

Actually, the people who buy these types of models probably shouldn't be dating... unless they find some masochistic chicks... otherwise, I'd be worried for the females they bring home...

Embarrassingly, at last year's Throne of Skulls at Warhammer World, one of the spectators was able to point out to my opponent that some of my miniatures were older than he was! (Original Nurgle traitor legionnaires).

You talk about awful minis and there are some - particularly when swords, daggers and pistols were single lumps and far too thick for proportionality.

But don't diss the OOP miniatures on ebay - some of said chaos above go for an absolute mint, Sgt Centurius last seen at £37, female commissars going up towards £50, the Admech group out at a ton...So someone is buying them and hence values them.

There's the nostalgia attached to some of those old sculpts that makes them worth more to some people. If you can remember playing the Rogue Trader rules there's a chance that the RBT01 powerfists and missile launchers hold a special place in your heart not to mention some of the 2nd ed and 3rd ed era sculpts like landspeeders. People tend to attach more value to models that have some memory attached even if (like most RT era sculpts) they were god awful!

There are very few of the older models that I find appealing, sure there is the occasional surprises like Cypher or Logan Grimnar which still hold there own against some of today's models. But for the most part most of the older models I found unappealing, like the older skinny Space Marines.

I didn't really get into this hobby until the new multi-part plastic models were released back in '98. I find that today's models are far superior but even today they come out with some that some that make you scratch your head... like that Crimson Fist Special Character from a few years ago... I think he was Captain 'Skinny' Marine? :)

Cheers,

FH

I find models fall into one of four categories.

I love the old 'flying couch' land speeder, 'Dante', Ezekiel, Land Raider, Wood Elf Dragon and Calgar on the toilet. Those are just so hilarious/great I can't but like them

Other models are just old and crappy, and have no redeeming features. Some off the top of my head are the old treeman, old chaos warriors, most older dragons and servitors (I swear, that damn one with the claw shows up in almost every book. I remember him as far back as the 2nd edition rulebook.)

Some models are new and awesome. Legion of the Damned are great, as well as a lot of the new plastics coming out. I don't think I have to give any more examples.

On the other side of things, there are new models that are new and worthless... anyone remember the Possessed that came out with Medusa V (or perhaps it was Cities of Death)? We had starfish hands, some guy with his tongue hanging out and a band of other misfits all prancing around. Then, there's Lucas the Trickster... Unfortunately for me, I love this sort of thing, and I can't help myself.

What do you guys make of these?

I've always had mixed feelings about them. They're appealing, in a Squig sort of way, but I guess Deamons should just be scarier...

When did airtraffic control get outsourced to the Immaterium?

Well, we now know why so many get lost during warp jumps...

The old Tzeentch minis are good if you prefer a more cartoonish army. Personally, I like my daemons to be nastier and scaries. Even the current horror model is a bit too cartoony for my tastes, but I've seen some cool armies using older models that really play up the cartoonish nature with bright colors. It ends up looking disturbing in a different sort of way, sort of like the worst nightmares of the Animaniacs came to life and started to destroy your army.

I have an original necron warrior. If you paint up your old models in more modern colours they usually get more attention.

One possibility is that people like the out of production models because they are tournament legal but rarer nowadays, so it can stand out a bit? I still love some of the earliest Chaos miniatures, and though models are a little bigger now, it's worth it to have something unique in your army. I am trying to collect Daemonettes of every edition to give a real, well, 'Chaotic' look to my army.

Never. They are good or bad depending on their quality alone.

But then I suppose I don't feel nostalgic considering I use the same models as in second edition, and I have a lot to complain about those, too, with their stupid corsets, man-heads, and giant boob-cones.

Seriously? The Sisters are great models, but I do agree that the faces are a bit manly.

But the "body" of the models are great. Power armor designed to look like busty corsets? Brilliant.

agreed on the sisters sculpts. i love em, except the heads, which im slowly phasing out by buying ebay stuff. some of the old stuff appeals i guess. what does my head in though is the amount of OOP stuff on ebay that i can STILL buy in any gaming store. just cos they were made with 2nd ed., doesnt mean theyre no longer in production. seems like a way to try and make more cash from those not in the know about that army.

Power armor designed to look like busty corsets? Stupid.

Fix, emphasis mine. These are holy warriors, soldiers of the God-Emperor, and blessed paladins of the Imperium, NOT SEX OBJECTS.

From an out-of-game perspective, sex sells, and Warhammer 40000 main inspiration are John Blanche's paintings, which have a very solid fetish undertone.

In other words power armor corsets are 100% Warhammer 40k.

Agreed. In my opinion (as an artist myself) 2nd edition had the best art direction in 40k over all, yet. Beautiful universe back then.

Models are all on personal taste. I like certain crappy ones myself, but other people around here loath them on the table top. Old Necrons are sooooo awesome!

Ok, sorry to break this up to you, but even according to fluff, imperial design is bound by tradition not by smart design concepts. They literally have no idea what they are doing. It took them centuries to improve power armour from mark 7 to 8(errant), and it's still not in actual production.

That from an in-game perspective.
