View Full Version : Anyone else thinking of starting a new army?

Morning all.

Got a late shift at work, so starting my gabbing early before I have to head out.

So, 7th Ed out tomorrow, and it's a tradition of mine to start a new army with each edition. Is anyone else indulging?

My thoughts are either Blood Angels, as I've never done them, or some kind of Rogue Traderesque Pirate army, drawing on suitable units from various army books (which I own all of, barring Blood Angels).

Blood Angels would definitely be a Battle Forged army, and nothing too fancy. Bit of flavour units, but otherwise largely a Red Vanilla Marine force, as it's been ages since I slapped on the Power Armour.

Piratical Force? Well, this all hinges on just how unbound an unbound army is. I haven't kept up with the rumours in this regard, or even the confirmations from those who have the rules already. In my head, and as published elsewhere, I'm thinking a core of Chaos Cultists to represent human pirates, perhaps with an IG tank or two, Dark Eldar Cabal Warriors mounted on Raiders, and of course, some suitably converted Orky Freebooterz. Probably a Rogue Mek and his toys. No idea how well that might work on the board, but it's one I want to do for the look of the thing. However, Unbound may not be quite as Unbound as we first thought, due to the possible application of Allies restrictions interfering. If the allies rules are too divisive (as in Come the Apocalypse), I might nix this plan. It's one thing to deliberately look ragtag, it's quite another to effectively wind up playing three or four armies as one.....

Anyone else?

Thinking about it? Sure. Thinking is for free.
Actually buying? Nope.

always thinking about new army concepts. I have 2 designs on the back burner as it is.

but Im not really buying for them though.

1 is another CSM slaanesh list (pics soon) list and I have the parts to do that already and the other is a sisters of battle army that needs a material that is easier to convert than metal.

Yup my Legion Alpha Legion (No Pun intended...) If i play my Demons people will start with the "OMG YOU ARE CHEESE PLAYER, OMG BANDWAGON" crap and i don't feel like dealing with that.

AM thinking about.

I am that person who likes the Taurox...

I'm starting a SoB/female Guard archaeological expeditionary force led by an Ordo Xenos Inquisitrix. Hunting down xenos artifacts for the Imperium.

I like the Taurox too. It's funky, and very 40k (not necessarily practical but hey, we've got the schematics. And we know it works!)

I thought i was alone!

I would slightly drop it on the axel as I think it sits slightly too tall.

My plan is to replace all chimera chasis tanks with taurox chasis.

Always.
But considering my workrate, combined with costs involved, and the urge to stick FW bits everywhere...

I'd love to do an army based on the SW fluff where the fang was defended by scouts, bloodclaws and dreadnoughts...

For me, it's not so much "starting a new army" as "sweeping together the bits of the IG army I've been building since just before 4th edition came out and making them playable". I'm going to have to pick up a Taurox though; I find myself bouncing back and forth between liking and not liking the shortbus, depending on the angle I see it from. I think what's finally sold me on the beast is the fact that while it costs $48, I can't seem to find a suitable WWII halftrack model to stand in for less than $40 after shipping, so I'm not really saving enough to deal with bringing a 3rd-party model up to snuff. Definitely agree with Wolfshade though, drop it down some, maybe set the rear tracks out slightly (I can just see a Dreadnought tipping the thing over with one finger and cackling).

I prefer to think of Dreadnoughts giggling like morons doing that sort of thing....

I'm going to make, and blog, an Orky Tank Krumpany :)
Looted and kitbashed imperial tanks as FW Heavy Trakks with death rollers and many many rockets :) (And crew obv)
A pair of converted battlewagons (and crew)
A pair of converted mekboy junkas (and bigmeks)
A trio of converted gunwagons
And a fleet of converted grot tanks
Oh and Grot mega Tanks!
Then maybe a Kustom Battle Fortress as a Lord of War.

I started some Dark Eldar a little while ago, and now I'm just going to work on my Eldar and Dark Eldar side by side without a care in the world. :)

Been lookin at doing HH 30k since Book 2 came out and SW's were suppose to be Book 4, according to rumors, however with FW shifting that book back 1 to 2 years... I'm just building a 6th Legion pre-heresy army now. :(

I'm making a 30K Horus Heresy army...seemed like more fun.

The versilitility and craziness that 30k offers (helps that I got collectors ed. from Adepticon's FW booth) Things like 3 different kinds of Drop Pods, weird tanks/support units... multiple lists that I want to try out.
20man tacticals, 20 man assault squads, wickedly cool models... Can't wait to get this thing together.

I've decided to trade the Eldar that I never really played with much and didn't really like the couple of times I did in for Daemons. Daemons of Tzeentch! Mastery Levels all over the place! Use Daemonology to summon dudes, and then use those dudes to help me summon more dudes.

Yo dawg, I heard you liked Daemons, so I put Daemons in your Daemons so you can be damned while you're damned!

Also, I can exploit the aesthetics of the pink horrors and my growing greenstuff skills to put tentacles on everything. I have this idea to make Daemon princes with tentacles sprouting from the forearms, or even just scratch-build objective markers or even models who are just masses of tentacles with screaming faces.

I don't think it's going to shove my Knights of Blood (+ assorted Imperial friends) aside as my main 40k army, but I do think it will be a lot of fun. It's also a nice contrast - my Knights of Blood are red and silver, with the occasional gold and white and green bling, and most of my real creativity is kit bashes (like my black reach librarian dreadnought with a homemade axe). This is a whole other world of crazy stuff!

This idea is also inspired by the new discipline of Malfic Daemonology, the new psychic rules, and brought to you by the letter C... for Change!

I like the Taurox as well. I think it suits the AM/IG better as a transport vehicle. The Taurox Prime is a real piece of kill kit with the various options you can put on it and it's higher speed.

Back to the original question: I'm considering aan Ork force for a change up.

I'm jumping on that train too. Going to try for guys summoning guys turing into LOC's.

just a thought for you E.P. the blue scribes can roll on any discipline and auto cast one spell without spending psychic points. So just roll malific every time and chances are they will spawn some guys or get possessed automatically. Totally worth the points investment. Nothing wrong with tons of tzeentch daemons making more tzeentch daemons.

I'll check 'em out. I've got a subtle bias against special characters, but I don't eschew them entirely.

Or use a demon of Tzeentch demons to summon all the other demons for free!!! If you want a cheap big monster caster though get a keeper of secrets.

Í liked the shape of the Taurox, look to the US Mastiff to see where the inspiration came from. The Brits adopted them for Afghanistan also. Don't understand the penchant for mounting the armaments behind the exit doors that GW has with its vehicles. Do they stop firing as troops dismount or is this the best way to get your boys toe to toe with the enemy, i.e. catch the next round as you step through the door and arrive at the target millie-seconds later?

Yeah... my current plan is to start the game with a mono-Tzeentch army, but probably start summoning units from other gods on Turn 1. Nurgle units on my first turn to hold backfield objectives as the rest of my army advances. Slaanesh and Khorne units on the second and third turn to win the assaults I get into. Then probably back to Tzeentch to replace my losses and re-empower my psykers on Turn 4. Etc.

If anything, I'm thinking of eliminating my armies. I have a BA army sitting here that I'd rather like to offload - but I'm going to wait and see what kind of stupid unbalanced crap GW gives them before I decide.

Probably BA, but I also want to do something for Armies on Parade involving Orks... We'll see!
