I've found that the plastic plants on their own tend to look very fake and jarring. Painting them can help a lot. If you're going to prime them or base them in a different colour it's easiest to do so before cutting up the plastic plants, but even a little drybrushing or some streaks/highlights applied once attached to the base improves them significantly.
