I've been looking recently into alternate mini's for Orks and I keep coming back to Revell and Airfix but I have no idea what is the closet they have to 28mm. I want to start with grot tanks but the I cant tell what size the smaller scale tanks and armoured vehicles are just by the box alone. Does anybody have experience in using them at heroic scale?

If you take a look inline for 1/48th or 1/50th scale models you should be in a ballpark. There are differences in the scale of details between 40k models and "real" models; particularly around rivets, gun barrels and the thickness of body panels.

You can get some cool kit like this: http://www.models4hobby.co.uk/Tamiya-Model-Kit-Russian-Armoured-Car-BA-64B-1-48-Scale-32576.html

or this: http://www.models4hobby.co.uk/Tamiya-Model-Kit-Kettenkrad-with-Cart-and-Goliath-Vehicle-1-48-Scale-32502.html

Ramshackle Games do some nice orky bits to help with scratchbuilding.

Great advice from both and I've been waiting forever for ramshackle to open the online shop again.
