Icon of Excess question

My opponent is taking two units that have the icon of excess. As far as I can see in the codex it is purchased as an upgrade for a single model in the unit. Does that mean that he needs to tell me which model that is (mark it appropriately) and if that model dies the unit loses FNP as the model with the icon is dead?

Yes. Like a special weapon. There are Bannerpoles to represent these icons in the box CSM box
