iplaythisgame's Heresy era Deathguard

I initially started this army back around the CSM release. I wanted to eventually play from the SM codex but at the time, I wasn't happy with just vanilla. So I started the Heresy era Deathguard so that I could play CSM rules until the new codex came out. Not being a standard codex army would also let me play in different flavors. I'm a fool for variety, and so far, apart from tourney practice, I haven't played the same list twice.

I've also used this army for 30k too. Really neat variant armies from that book.

So in this thread you'll see some Chaos Space Marines, Codex Space Marines and Legion Space Marines.

Tactical Marines.
These are a mix of some older kits, the newer kits, with some forgeworld sprinkled in. The idea was that in the Heresy era wars, as armor was damaged, newer variants were mixed in on a per basis.

lovely workmanship on those minis, I like your idea of mixing early Hersey era armours with the later models, it fits in fluff wise and looks cool, as most mk6 and mk7's entered service in the last days of the Heresy....

Here are some of the Characters I've been using for the army. Don't hate on the paint too much. When I played years ago, I was a grey primer army type guys. This go round, I'm focused on getting painted models on the table first. Then I can put more effort into the paint.

For when I play Chaos flavor, I have a generic termy lord, Typhus, and I have converted up an Abbadon, but haven't painted him yet. Plus a few Chaos Terminators. Have I mentioned I'm a magnet sucker? I've pretty much magnetized every army in this post.

I decided against the ginormous chunk of metal of the Thunderfire cannon. I also wanted something to count as Thudd guns in 30k. I decided to build my own. After playing with a few tracked Ideas, I decided to go with the Forgeworld tarantula base. Then I needed a cannon. From a variety of bits pipe and wire, I converted these Thunderfire cannons. Since they're mounted on the standard turret mount, I have even thought about using them for Stalkers.

At some point this week I'll try to sit down and identify the pieces in the thunderfires. It's mostly drop pod pieces and turret pieces.


With my Chaos army being heresy era, I didn't want to include too many demonic looking models. So the large dragon turkey is out. Instead I created my heldrakes from something that looks a bit more like a fighter jet. They have roughly the same footprint as a heldrake, so no one accuses me of shenanigans.

Incidentally a good way to get cheaper vehicles are looking for damaged listings. I cast a wide net on ebay and find crazy and crazy cheap things all the time. I found a 3 land raider chasis listing that were damaged/terrain previously for $50. I was able to save 1 chasis for a usable LR. So when I play my non chaosy Chaos Space Marines, I needed some obliterators. Before Centurions came out(dang) I used Forgeworld Tartaros Terminators as the base and glued a ton of random bits onto them to get my Prototype Heavy weapons Terminators(Nurgle Oblits).

Here is the test model I did for my upcoming allied Sons of Horus. A Sons of Horus Librarian I can use as an unmarked Chaos Pace Marine Sorcerer from time to time. I chose a bit darker scheme than the Forgeworld scheme. I like it, and it's fairly easy to paint.
