Okay I don't play loyalist marines" Death to the false emperor" But have been a big fan of the legion of the damned, esp. with the new models just released. I have been toying around with making a loyalist army usesing only the legion of the damned models new and old. I first thought about a codex chapter, but as they are a legion Ive started thinking the space wolves codex might be better suited. SUGGESTIONS

I'd use a normal space marine codex. Using a space wolf codex might be interesting.

I'd probably suggest Space Wolves, as long as you don't use psychic powers...

The LOTD models don't really look like combat dudes. I.E. they don't come off as "I'M GOING TO CHARGE YOU LIKE A SPACE VIKING AND RIP YOUR FACE OFF." As such, I would not think Space Wolves a good fit.

If you want fluff only, go with Thousand Sons, b/c what better representative other than their own models for slow moving, eerie, warp-residing spooky marines?

You could also just do loyalist utilizing the plain jane dex, since the fluff implies that's probably what they were. Blood Angels probably would work too, plus they're getting a new dex ... Angels are trying hard to be loyalist, but have a deep flaw that causes them to go fuggin' nuts from time to time ... sounds like spooky warp inhabiting loyalists to me.

Well, one could use the gucci-est new models and happen to also use the gucci-est new codex...

Or not get on the bandwagon just go with Codex Space Marines - try and pick all deep strikers and them above and beyond normal Tac marines to go with the fluff - couple of minimum points scouts squads for the troops, is there a character which makes stern/van scoring?

Fluff could be the two minimal scout squads are them that needs saving by the big boys.

Or some such.

Keep in mind I have no intentions of using the special rules or even fluff as to where or what the LOTD are originally. Just the metal minis

I recognize that, per the above information. I just think that the minis look like what they are ... slow moving bolter marines that are durable. As such, something like space wolves would be totally inappropriate to the way the army would look on the table.

I'M ABOUT TO CHARGE YOU WITH MY CRAZY GREY HUNTERS AND ALL OF THEIR ATTACKS WITH ... these big heavy treads and their bolters.

Scoring yes, troop choices no, unlike Nobz when you have a Warboss...

Well, if you simply want to build a MEQ army with LotD minis, than pick whatever codex you like. Or heck, switch freely.

I'd go with Sternguard heavy vanilla marines. Goes with the shooty-yet-not-push-overs-in-combat feel of the LOTD models. They just advance forward, mowing down everything in their path.

My 2nd Ed Space Marine was the Legion of the Damned, and I've played them recently as either codex Marines or Space Wolves. As I've never actually used them as LotD from the 5th ed Marine dex, just as WYSIWYG standard Marines in Halloween armour, the lack a special weapons choices from the old days does restrict what options I can take when fielding them is normal Marines. Using the new Space Wolf dex, I've run them as Grey Hunters which I've found to be a better synergy since LotD are veterans and the bulk of my LotD mini's have bolters and a CCW. Again, my options are limited due to the limited selection for weapon choices I have with my OoP models.

With the new release of more LotD minis, my plan is to flesh out my existing army with current weapon options that are available in both of the current 5th ed Marine Dexes, with an eye on just using which ever dex gives my the best bang.

I know that doesn't help the OP much, but in the end each of us needs to figure out how they are going to play based on what they've got or want to get.

I think Space Marines will suit you best, as it was said before, sternguard sounds very LOTDy plus i think the tactical squads represent their spirit more than the grey hunters.... you could also use Vulkan and Lysander. Lots of nice fire and some toughness wich i think fits perfectly with LOTD.;)

if you don't care about fluff and rules for LotD why not just use the models and make you're own chapter. Maybe i'm an idiot but i don't understand the point of making and entire army of LotD models and fielding them as LotD, but not using any rule set that makes them what they are, Invulnerable, relentless, heavy gun lines. I guess to me the special rules are what makes the army distinct. i agree with most of these guys that Stern and tacs work for fluff and could maybe work in a scout squad in, most Sgts should have like Pwr Fists or something. but then now we're talking about a fluff based army, so just pick whatever dex you like (space wolves) and sub in the models.

i have been using the reg marine dex to use this army .. id love my own dex for this army but gw is too stupid to do that

sternguard work great for this type of army

but overall the lotd unit in the marine dex sucks

If you just like the models you can use any codex you want. But the models don't look all that close assault based. So maybe use a codex space marine’s character like Lysander to make them shootier.

However if you want to use them as a LotD army, I have to say that the best suggestion to use the Thousand sons is the BEST I've heard. They can move and shoot like the LOTD, they have an invul save like the LotD. I would use two detachments or use the "allies" rules. Take thousand sons, and then take either a detachment of C: SM for the purpose of using up the elite slots for real LOTD. You could also make some pretty funky stuff, making your LotD dread "count as" one of your daemon princes or something cool.

Lots of possibilities
