View Full Version : What Mini-dex do you want?

With Codex Imperial Knights and Militarum Tempestus, Gw has finally dived into the whole "mini codex" idea. Which ones would you like to see? It seems these are primarily designed to be played as allies to existing armies, but can be used on their own in a fairly limited capacity.

I am outright going to say : Sslyth.

1) non-humanoid (which is really f'ing needed ffs)
2) fills the "lizardmen in space" niche (but isnt a straight boring port of the WHF version)
3) Adds another playable Xeno race.
4) Can ally with at least Dark Eldar (and perhaps a few others too)

They could probably release an infantry boxset that makes 3-5 models with it being a duel kit of course, plus a Sslyth specific vehicle kit (also a duel kit).

i'm sure there will be the usual splurge of squats/demiurg, genestealer cults, chaos guardsmen and exodite eldar, but would love to hear more original suggestions if you got em' ;)

Codex: Death Company.

What we need is more Space Marines. BoLS did a really nice army of death version

1) Follows basic space marine models and stat lines so a quick and fairly cheap thing to do
2) Expands out the DC options already in C:BA
3) Allies: C:BA not Lamenters

Codex Squats

can be a small allied detachment for most armies
fills the space dwarf slot
adds more abhumans
squats were awesome

Harlequins would be my first choice. It wouldn't require much model wise. Perhaps a box for mimes and a kit that could be built as a solitaire/great harlequin.

Also, a supplement that focused on Altansar. That would be an interesting read.

Hrm... Yeah, there's plenty out there that could be buffed out. Here's what I'd like to see...

Codex: Slaanesh - filled with Noise Marines, Slaanesh Daemons, and war machines of Slaanesh
Codex: Tzeentch - Thousand Sons, Daemons of Change, etc.
Codex: Khorne - Berzerkers, Bloodletters, Juggernauts, etc.
Codex: Nurgle - Plague Marines, Great Unclean Ones, Plaguebearers, etc.
Codex: Harlequins - finally fill out the Harlequins with their own Jetbikes, their own Wraithlords, their own HQ's and troops and troupes and such!
Codex: Alien Mercenaries - Kroot, Vespid, Hrud, Sslyth, and a dozen other alien species could all fit into here in a variety of ragtag groups. It would probably end up being Codex: Kroot, with another Codex: Alien Mercs for everything else the way GW does their 2 pages of rules...
Codex: Night Lords
Codex: Word Bearers
Codex: Iron Warriors
Codex: Alpha Legion

Etc. etc. GW has a lot of room to slot in codexes for single units, or separate factions. Between mini-dexes and supplements, 6th edition is going to get very fat very fast.

Mr.Pickelz
04-10-2014, 08:55 AM
Codex Speed Freakz

Bikerz as troops (without character to unlock)
squads of Dakkajets, battlewagons, etc...
Mechanized Ork units
combine "Waagh!" effect with Red Paint Job for movement shenanigans
could give a nightfighting style rule when enough units with "Exhaust Cloud" are on the table

I'd love to see a world-eaters supplement, if only to make them playable as a different and distinct army again. Khorne armies are pretty much just standard chaos armies with a couple of berzerker squads now :-(

I'm quite interested to know what plastic kits the lot of you would want though. If we go by Tempestus - they had 1 vehicle and 1 infantry (it might not be the pattern that follows but..)

Gleipnir
04-10-2014, 09:40 AM
Keeping in mind my definition of a mini dex would be any dex that lacks a complete roster of FOC or uses an alternate detachment deployment

Codex Assassins
Codex Deathwatch
Codex Harlequins
Codex Kroot

Would be my first 4 choices as I think all 4 would be fairly simple and straightforward to produce with existing rules and models if need be and there would seem to be sufficient room to expand on existing fluff.

Codex Mechanicus
Codex Ecclisiarchy
Codex Mutants and Abhumans
Codex Genestealer Cults
Codex Feral Orks
Codex Exodites

Would be my long shot list with Mechanicus looking more and more likely with every forthcoming HH forgeworld release, remaining non standard Alien races I think I would rather see Dataslates for rather than a full codex.

I don't list the various chaos god or legion centric armies or Space Marine chapters, because I would rather see them get a Supplement treatment at least on par with what we saw for Imperial Fists and Iron Hands.

Glad someone agrees. Could be a good lead-in to the next Dark Eldar codex, 1 week with a few kits and codex, then the rest of the month dedicated to DE.Codex: Commorragh Pits? I like how the Dark Eldar are described as something of a minority ruling caste in the unthinkably huge, sprawling mass of Commorragh. C:CP could flesh out day-to-day life in the pits as being mostly run by the Sslyth (on behalf of Dark Eldar employers), and have an army list based around a Sslyth dual kit, Dark Eldar Raiders/Venoms with a small Sslyth add-on sprue and a variety of slave mobs.

I guess Slave Mobs would also need a plastic kit (with Human/Eldar/Tau bits, and 1 or 2 Space Marines/Orks as unit upgrades), since relying on players to make conversions is apparently a no-go now. Cost could be offset by also giving Slave Mobs a Dataslate for use by Chaos Marines/Daemons, Orks, Dark Eldar, Necrons.

Asymmetrical Xeno
04-10-2014, 11:24 AM
I suppose we'll have to see how these mini-dex armies evolve..Imperial Knights had only the one kit, and Tempestus two. So it seems like from that, it's probably best to not expect too many plastic kits made for successive ones (If there are any).

Dont really care for Genestealer cults myself but agree they should be made. They could be cool if there is more focus on the hybrid horror aspects, a healthy dose of giger and Innsmouth could do the concept justice.

I happen to agree on the "models for everything" mentality. Conversions shouldn't be a necessity but something done out of a desire to be creative and excersize imagination IMO.

Conversions shouldn't be a necessity but something done out of a desire to be creative and excersize imagination IMO.I mostly agree with it, but feel there are some instances were "officially sanctioned" conversions would be ideal. Genestealer Cults being portrayed as kitbashes of Flagellants, Chaos Cultists, Cadians and Genestealers, for instance. Or the hypothetical Slave Mob being a kitbash-job with a Sslyth as unit-leader. Perhaps a Sslyth plastic kit could have a half-dozen human-slave-heads compatible with other human kits, kinda like how the Space Wolf squad has parts that only fit plastic scouts, despite it being a power-armour-only box.

However, more complex stuff, such as the missing Dark Eldar aircraft, or the once unavailable menagerie of Tyranid monsters, are/were unreasonable to have as conversion-only.

Ah, the space wolf kit was great in that it included things like the scouts heads to use on other kits. It's a great way of adding new units for very little work and I'm a bit surprised they havent reused that idea in latter kits, as it seems a good way to boost sales of older kits . I'm definitely for things like that.

Things I'd like to see:

Alpha Legion

Arbites

Genestealer Cults

Mechanicus

Necromunda Gangs !

I'm always looking for ways to squeeze Necromunda minis into 40k armies, but the loadouts are generally hard to make work. I'd love a minidex that was flexible enough to handle the variety of loadouts across the old Necromunda range. I currently use them as cultists, but the weapons options limit me to only using some of them. Or to chop them up...

I recall a rumor from last year that GW was going to do a genestealer cult codex. I expect to see one. I want a 1k son dex. Also some codices of various ork tribes would be nice or maybe a Freebooter Ork dex.

Don't really care for the ssylth or whatever they are. We already have a reptilian race of xenos.

Thornblood
04-10-2014, 04:13 PM
The thing with the mini-dex's is that they are made up of pre-existing models, or ls from other ranges.

Therefore, as much as I want codex; Raven Guard/Scout company/ Ravenguard-scout company, what would be much cooler would be

Codex; Kroot Mercenaries- battle brothers with Tau, Guard, Orks (coz dey can be green too), and Dark Eldar They would need to use the forgeworld range...

HQ- Master Shaper, Retinue- made up of shapers. Have access to a limited amount of 'merc gear' from other races- power weapons, bolters, imperial 'special weapons', a few Tau weapons, a few Delder weapons... maybe the baggage great knarloc can join them, allowing them to have more weapons than they can carry...

Troops- Normal Kroot Hunter Kindred, Maybe a Stalker Kindred with stealth, no krootox, maybe cameleoline skin (so stealth 5+ in total).

Elite- SSlyth mercenaries, Human mercenaries (hardened vets/necromunda gangs), eldar rangers (who knows what there up to), Vespid, kroot veterans with guns from a particular race (kroot unit with a choice between tau rail rifles, hellguns, shardcarbines, flamers etc

Heavy support - Krootox herds, Great Knarloc herds,

Fast attack- Beatsmasters with Kroot hounds, beastmasters with clawed fiends they captured, Knarloc Ride

Perhaps they get to pick one other army to have previously campaigned with/fought against/stolen there stuff, giving them the elite unit with said weaponry, plus liberated dedicated transports- chimeras and taurox for guard, not convinced they could use other races transports though...

Could be good. more options than Militarum Tempestus, uses existing ranges, expands the depth of non-imperials, gives people with kroot collections a chance to use them and maybe buy new stuff... what dya think?

Bring back the Deathworlders!

Bring back da Klans!

Bring back the Assassins!

Bring back the World Eaters(the other marks don't really count)!

Bring back the Craftworlds!

Bring back the Kroot!

We don't even need new mini-codices when there are plenty of old ones that just need revamped.

There are certainly a lot of opportunities for new mini-dexes though.. and outside of a Rogue Trader/Merc list or a fully realized Tau Aux mini dex, most of the things I look for are already in existence as old books or White Dwarf/Chapter Approved entries. There are a ton of these types of things in the Forgeworld books.. which isn't doing anyone any favors IMO. Elyssians started off as an article in a White Dwarf just like a ton of others. It'd be cool to get that without having to buy some huge FW book that I really have no interest in.

I want ... none.

Splat books were the death of TSR back in the 80's, and TSR did them better than GW is. If they can scrape together one functioning brain amongst them at GW, they will do a 180, right @#$!ing now.

Gleipnir
04-10-2014, 10:53 PM
it wasn't so much the splat books as it was trying to support too many game lines(over 15 separate game worlds at the time they were acquired) and weakening their brand by providing licensing for anything and everything that hurt TSR.

Case in point when Wizards bought TSR they produced more splat books for one edition than any previous edition prior to that in 3rd edition.

GW could be said to have reduced its game lines considerably by removing specialist games, and licensing out its RPG's and Computer and online games, though I personally think they are damaging their brand by putting their name on as many lower quality PC and application games as they have been recently.

Not sure why a sci-fi game needs to fill the slots of races in a fantasy equivalent game.

Warzone books with a handful of kits would be pretty amazing.

I can get behind Genestealer Cult, Kroot dex, and Mutant humans (I really liked Lost and the Damned) lists. They previously existed and were fun, it would be nice to see them return.

I would really like to see more support for existing Chaos Legions, and even for the primary SM Chapters.

And would prefer them supporting / expanding existing races over introducing new ones, and for SM and CSM I'd prefer they did supplements to support core Chapters / Legions over creating new ones. Supplement support for Eldar Craftworlds, some IG (catachan/mordian/valahllan/chaos guard etc.) and Ork supplements as well. I think treating some of the other existing races a little more like they treat Space marines would be what I would want. Larger variation with the current races.

I always thought a Mechanicum codex would be pretty awesome. Fun to model anyways.

Codex Arbites. Possibly as a part of a Planetary defence force. Or as part of a dual/paired codex with...

Codex Hive gangers. Large organised crime syndicate feel, or just feral warlord ruling a hive.
They could be opposed factions or unite against a common enemy incursion (chaos/xenos threat)

Codex 13th Company. Extra wolfy space wolves. Possibly corrupt.

Codex blood pact/sons of sek

Codex frontiers people/settlers. Settling on a wild and hostile planet makes you pretty good at killin' and staying alive. Themed kinda like firefly.

To add a bit to my last post, some possible force compositions for a few of the mini-codex ideas.

CODEX: HARLEQUINS
HQ: Great Harlequin
HQ: High Shadowseer
ELITE: Solitaire
TROOPS: Harlequin Troupe
TROOPS: Mimes
FAST ATTACK: Harlequin Jetbikes

A Dedicated Transport specific to the Harlequins would also be nice. Something Open-Topped that they can assault out of.

CODEX: EXODITE ELDAR
HQ: Exodite Lord
TROOPS: Exodite Dragon Knights

This would need filling out, of course. I'm sure multiple units of Dragon Knights could be devised, with the Exodites riding different kinds of beasts, like flying creatures, velociraptor equivalents, and so on.

CODEX: CHAOS CULTISTS
HQ: Demagogue
HQ: Chaos Magus
TROOPS: Chaos Cultist Coven
TROOPS: Traitors
TROOPS: Beastmen Pack
TROOPS: Mutants
ELITE: Big Mutants
FAST ATTACK: Chaos Hounds
HEAVY SUPPORT: Chaos Spawn

A Chaos Cultist list would also be a great place to see ramshackle human vehicles, like civilian vehicles converted for war (I.E. Like if you were to bolt a minigun onto the bed of a pickup truck, things like that), in addition to traitor Imperial Guard vehicles included in the list. I think the game definitely needs this list, though, as this is the most common way that Chaos manifests throughout the galaxy.

CODEX: TAU HUMAN AUXILIARIES
HQ: Patriarch
HQ: Matriarch
TROOPS: Gue'vesa Team (Carapace Armor, Pulse Rifle/Pulse Carbine)
TROOPS: Orrus Team
ELITE: Jakara Team
FAST ATTACK: Malcadon Team
HEAVY SUPPORT: Yeld Team

Spyrer technology seems to come from the Tau, so it seems that the next logical step is to deploy that technology for war through their human servants, who're best suited to man rigs which are predominantly melee focused and support them with normal human soldiers in human versions of Combat Armor and Pulse Rifles.

Death Jesters are already part of the Harlequin Troupe unit, as are standard Shadowseers.

It would be best to ignore the unit composition rules from the Eldar/Dark Eldar books. That represents a small group of harlequins visiting a Craftworld/Kabal. A supplement would be to field Harlequins as a stand alone army. They would be organized differently as a stand alone force.

Also, the old rules for Harlequins allowed Wraithlords as heavy support choices. I always liked to think of them as solitaires that the Laughing God was able to save from Slaanesh :)

Being a hardcore eldar player, top 2 codex/supplements I want : Harlequins, I've got a whole bunch of the old rogue trader harlies + some current ones, would be nice to have a new playable army, I've got the models waiting for it. Exodites, according to info from FW, they are working on this one, they will be the ones releasing it.

Already got corsairs, with an update coming up, a very fair codex and some cool minis, now I need some exodite minis!

Obvioiusly the missing craftworld supplements would be nice to have.

I'm also a dark kin player, something like a Black Heart Kabal supplement would be welcomed with much joy from my part.

Being a Nid and Tau player, I'm rooting for a Genestealer supplement and A kroot codex comeback, no rush though as I still got too much other stuff to work, but it would be nice!

Id like to see a Codex; Chaos Cults list too. Possibly designed to ally with Alpha Legion..? Some odd mix of chaos cultists and traitor guard? That'd be cool.

Emperors Children but only if they let us put sonic weaponry in most of the squads like we used to be able to

Just because I play them; Word Bearers.

- Accursed Crozius will replace, power maul on Apostles; power maul with teleport homer for friendly models with Daemon special rule and. Apostle can also take items from the Melee and special wargear
- If apostle is taken, he must be the warlord. WB traits are Apostle central and about supporting troops or improving daemon incursions.
- Icons of summoning - act as teleport homers for models with daemon rule.
- no marks can be taken.
- Possessed replace vessels of chaos for 'Unburdened'. acts the same as Obliterator/Mutilator weapons, allowing the possessed to choose their mutation each turn, in addition adds the daemon rule and +1 S if it's a wargear purchase (see below).
- unburdened is also a Special wargear upgrade.
- Daemonmancer - Sorcerers are restricted to Malefic Daemonology but count as having the Daemon special rule when rolling doubles (so no negative effects for not being a daemon).

then some wargear and whatever else they fill the book with.

EDIT: oh and if they don't get a full book, Lost and Damned for Guard. adds units, strips away guard organisation buddy buds with Chaos Marines and Chaos Daemons.

Adeptus mechanicus hands down is the biggest faction in 40k that needs a codex.

I'm going to say Catachans, Bad Moons, and Kabal of the Flayed Skull for Dark Eldar.

I couldnt disagree more, a mini-dex would never be enough to do them justice. They should have a full sized one.

Realistically, you can do a fair bit with just the allies and unbound stuff at this point, which is handy.

That being said, I'd probably go for the 'modern' aka 40K versions of the various Traitor Legions, Genestealer Cults and a book for the various Assassins.

Feral orks, 13th company, kroot mercernaries, indavidual chaos legions, primarily the big 4 with rebel/demons rolled into said codexes.

Let's see:

minidexes for the original Traitor Legions
a straight Mortal Chaos army, with all the fun stuff (random mutants, daemonhosts, forbidden technomancy, zombies, and of course, extra-VP generating Doomsday devices)
Genestealer Cults
dexes for the other AM subfactions that have models
a Tomb Warden-themed Necron minidex
and a free-for-all codex full of mercenary formations, each subject to their own Allies rules.

I knew I forgot something. Definitely needs to happen. It's not like they don't have the necessary bitz for the army anyway.

I was going to homebrew one. I'd see a mostly light infantry based Marine list, with lots of veteran rules and mobile, quality shooting supplemented with elite assault units and a few basic vehicles.

I actually ran a Deathwatch army back in 5th and 6th. I used Crimson Fist rules so Sternguard would score but I did run them as mostly infantry and added a Storm Raven when all Marines could finally take them.

In 7th I'm running them using Ultramarines Chapter Tactics for maximum flexibility. And. Ow with the more wide open allies rules I plan to add some Kill Marines (bought as Wolf Scouts) and an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor and retinue. The biggest problem I'm having now is coming up with new Chapters. My current army has 63 different Marine Chapters represented, it's starting to get tough making up new ones!

Well, a few of the older copies of the Codex Astartes are called Apocrypha! Like the Skaros and Davio, but, hopefully its something more interesting than that!

For the mini-dex I'd say Codex: Savlar Chem Dogs and here is why.

9977

Penal legionnaires disappeared from the new Guard codex, which isn't a bad thing because as they were they were rubbish. However as a Scions like release there are some interesting you could do with them. Most the famous Guard regiments can be made with C:AM, but Penal Legions are different beasts from a normal regiment

Why the Chem Dogs?

Cool name aside they are a penal legion that has a established backstory. They use combat drugs which will aid them as an assault unit and perhaps most importantly they aren't lumbered with a design legacy from the early 90's heavily influenced by the Perry Brothers love of military history.

So, what would make them different?

First off you would be able to field them as platoons with the Combined Squads USR allowing for decent sized units, after all they are an assault unit. However to represent that they aren't just scruffy druggy Cadians instead of sergeants you get gene bulked/vat grown muscle enhanced big lads instead. All those gangers with facial acid tats that populate the underhives are missing for the imperial roster as things are. Then for flavour, if you have a squad of that least 30 you can take an Ogryn. That would mean you could not take more than one even in a full strength platoon. I've no idea how it would aid combat effectiveness but it is fluffy as hell and would look cool.

Then you have the Platoon command squad, Carapace Armour, Shotguns... Arbites basically with a stubborn bubble. They are the whip at the heels of the convicts. Possibly even Arbite/Warden squads, if they are going to the trouble of making the kit then why not let people use them?

The combat drugs, Furious charge and Rage maybe?

And then a USR of my own devising, or rather the germ of a USR, King Rat. To represent the weak "dying mewling under the enemy guns" (I haven't the old codex in front of me but it was something like that). Each round of combat after the first one they are locked in combat they get better. It's worth noting at this point I'm coming at this from a "what's cool and fluffy" angle, not that of game designer with a firm grasp mathematics.

Anyway caveats aside it could work like this, first round you get your combat drugs bonus, then if the combat is still ongoing in your opponents assault phase the Chem Dogs get +1 to either their Weapon Skill, Strength, Toughness, Initiative or Attacks. This could be randomised and the player would roll for each round that the Chem Dogs were locked in combat after the initial charge adding a maximum of +1 to each stat. There is probably a simpler way of achieving a similar effect, but this is an initial sketch of how to represent the convicts getting whittled down until only toughest, meanest born survivors are left.

Equipment.

The Savlar Chem Dogs are scavengers but they don't have access to exotic weaponry, so no Meltas, Plasma or Power Weapons or Heavy Weapons in the squads or Heavy or Specialist Weapons Teams in the Platoons. However they do get an additional close combat weapon, so armed to the teeth with looted pistols and shanks in addition to their lasgun because the Munitorum wouldn't waste any of the good stuff on what are essentially cannon fodder.

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text, we've been enjoying a little heat wave in the UK so it has been deathly quiet at work today.
