View Full Version : TGC - Questions about Narrative

So, narrative will be here once again for fun and yelling and dice.
Which books are legal this year? Can I bring a 30k list? Does it need to be 40k? Are we restricting anything for the sake of fun?
I have building and painting to do between now and then, and I need to know where to focus my time.

This should answer your initial questions.

Hey Rabscutle!
This Dan one of the Narrative guys. We are running a 30K theme, but everyone is welcome. We are still working out guidelines for lists. We are going to talk about them on the the V-Blog (follow the TGC Facebook page).
Post what you're planning and I can give you direct feedback. However, if you plan around 2.5-3K of normal units than add in a couple fortifications, super heavies, etc. You're in a safe ballpark. Plus we are flexible, if you don't have 3K, we'll adjust, if you only have a Kill Team, we'll find a place for you, if you happened to own a Imperator-class Titan ... you win (not the game, just this thread), we will find a place for you to play.
The golden-rule: We're playing with toys, let's not take it too seriously. Leave the cheese, bring the fluff.

I just keep going in a circle...This forum clicks to the 40k game page and that page points here. I'm not worried about a timeline until I know what I can bring.

Hey Flatscan, it is Dan again,
30K theme? But what if I want to bring Tyranids? That cool???
YES!!! Not only cool, we have already thought of ways to use Nids in cool ways!
Our goal for the Narrative, is a cool story with a place for everyone to have good time. Bring the army you'll have a good time playing. The theme only gives us a high level narrative. Who's to say Tyranids aren't hanging out in the under-hives and dark places waiting for havoc to reign, answer no one. We make it so. Time to go gather some bio-mas.
To that note, if there is something awesomely narrative you want to do, swarms of small bugs, lurker, something like that let's talk about it and we'll find good place for it. I have tons of ideas, but in the end the narrative is your game and my job is to make it happen.
Thanks,
-Dan

His Dudeness,
We you know what you want to bring, we'll find room for you in the narrative if you choose to join us.

We are still working on list guidelines (out shortly)... ~3500* points for the Apoc game is where we looking. Heresy World Eaters would be fun since we are doing Shadow Crusade from the HH book Betrayer. There will be 3 types of games going on. Kill Team with theme based missions, 2250 point themed missions (normal games no Super Heavies or fortification) and ~3,500 point Apoc game. All of the games are parts of the same battle. All armies are welcome. We'll find a place in the fluff for you. The only rule is leave the cheese at home. If you have read the book you know Armatura is toast, the good guys don't. So relax and let the dice roll.
Don't hold me to the point values, we are still trying to see if we can make things more flexible.

... no if I can find about 12 ultramarine players.

Sweet. My local group (12-15 people) is starting a 30k escalation campaign next weekend. By June we will be at the 2500+ point level, so I'm trying get most of them to commit to showing up.

If you mean the Apocalypse rules for it, then yes. It will be limited to use on the Apocalypse-level games, of course. Formations that grant strategic assets will be considered on a case-by-case basis for balance with the rest of the game.
But as was said above: if you have an interest, we have a place for you! If your thing is popping out Kabalites and Wyches from a portal torn in space and time, we will find a way to work it in and make it fun!

What about a very large contingent of Raven Guard? They were at were not there in the official fluff. I also have tons of super heavys I could bring, Thunderhawk, two titans and some other stuff I would have to paint. Let me know.

All armies are welcome! "Narrative" doesn't mean we are limiting the forces to those in the novel. If that was the case, we'd have a pretty limited event! (Word Bearers, Ultramarines and World eaters + titans and void battles.)
The event is FUN FIRST. If you have models, and they are painted, we want you to play and we will find some cool way to integrate you into the story.
Aardvark: bring those Ravens, and bring those Supers. We will find a place.
SMG: bring those boys in yellow (or whichever color they may have been pre-heresy) and we will find a place for them.
While we are never ones to tell you not to engage in the hobby side of 40k, we don't want you "forced" to paint something just for the event. It's much better that you choose projects that inspire you, and you WANT to bring them to the event! :)
Check out the last video blog for more info on what to bring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiGY2SHLXoA

My son and I are working on a 30k Death Guard force, but I doubt we'll have 3500 points done by then. Since its double force org would it be ok to bring one force org from the legion list and one from Chaos Space Marines Codex for an army? Kind of a 'mid-corruption' force?
Wineshark
04-19-2014, 11:41 PM
Answer: yes. Whatever you build, paint and are ready to put on the table will work.
Remember though: it's NOT JUST a 3500 point game. You could have just 200 points of a Kill Team Death Guard and come play in the Narrative. Or you could just build 2500 points and play in the double-FOC "standard 40K" part. Or you could mix and match. Or you could build your Death Guard and add in other CSM to fill out 3500 points to play in the Apoc-level portion of the game.
This point seems to stem some confusion, and we understand why. The Narrative is NOT JUST APOC. It's three levels of play, which players can take part in any level they wish, or even mix levels over the course of the weekend.
This isn't about restriction. We are classifying those levels of play to help tell cool stories at each level.
So: bring as many Death Guard as you have, "top off" with other Chaos forces, and play in any level you choose. It's all one, big, fun event!

Thanks for the explanation, I'd read it as a kind of an escalation - first you play kill-team games, then 2500 pt games, then apoc game at end.
So Friday night, will that be all 3 types of game or just Kill-team?

Sorry to bother you, but I read the post for the narrative game, and I still have a couple questions. It made reference to the "model policy" for the con...what is that as I could find nothing on the site? I was also wondering if my force would be valid. It is composed using the Horus Heresy book three Taghmata rules for the mechanicum(dark mechanicum). Will this be okay? Will Saturday and Sunday be apocalypse? Lastly, the different tables. I am confused how that is to work? I have two warhound and three knights, but I would hate to be solely relegated to a superheavy only table as the rest of my dark mechanicum forces would be nigh useless. Thank you so much for your time and patience.

@ JohnCS: Friday will be Kill Team only. Light, quick fights to get everyone who can make it on Friday get into the action.
@ Machidiel9: I'm not sure where the model policy is at present, but I'll dig up a link. In short, it means models must be painted to a 3-color standard to be used in play. (Besides...gray plastic makes the Narrative gods cry...)
Great to hear you have a Mechanicum force! Yes...we will work it in. Remember, it's on you to bring the copies of the rules that apply to your army.
Saturday and Sunday will feature all three scales of games: Kill Team, 40k and Apoc. You may play in any/all and switch between at the breaks.
It sounds like the Titan force belongs on the Wasteland table (or "Titan Alley" as we are calling it). We are doing this to bring balance, and allow some narrative options. As a draft response, I'd say plan on backing up your Hounds and Knights with your mechanicum on that table. It won't be JUST big heavies there, and even those need to have some support from the corrupted former servants of the Omnissah.
If you plan up a 2500pt force, without the hounds or knights, you can slot into the 40k-style games, and if you cobble together some of those adepts, I'm sure you can make a Kill Team fit to help protect the Heretical forces in the boarding actions on the side boards. It's all up to you. Each portion will have cool options.

I had a couple more questions. Sorry to be such a hassle. I have a scratch built warhound titan. It is quite obvious what it is, it is painted, but it is also obviously scratch built. I can supply you with pics to help in determining, but I was wondering if I could run that as well? Oh and the concept of my force is the Cult of the Dragon, the mechanicum who worship the true Omnissiah *cough, cough* the void dragon *cough*. I am working on a model for it as we speak, that I want to run as a transcendent C'tan. Would this be alright as well? Thanks again, and sorry for all the questions.

Yes.

Yes.
Keep in mind this is beer and dice gaming, however. Bring a fun army you're proud of over power units. If you're proud of your titan by all means bring it! We need titans. But don't forget the best way to have fun in narrative gaming is to show up with the army you're proud of and relax you're already at the top table. :)

BTW: I would always love to see pic of a titan, post away!

We will make the call before May 31. Being a beer and dice event the impact of the new edition is not as big of a deal for Narrative. We are leaning towards 6th, just so that folks don't spend as much time reading rules. However, we want to see what 7th ed is like before making that call.
Thanks,

I just wanted to express some concern/input over the narrative rules this year.
I'm a little saddened by the inclusion of xenos/non-30k codexes is the "30k narrative". It's enough that some of my 30k group have decided to not make the drive from Houston and a few others are on the fence. Especially, for the price tag. Being the largest and one of the only 30k events in Texas, the TGC narrative has been a great way to play 30k with people from all over the state.
I doubt the inclusion will actually affect the fun of the game; but it does take away from the narrative aspect and just becomes just another kill team, standard, and apoc game. We get enough of those here in Houston.

I will be bringing a contingent of Wolves to this event, I thought it would be fun to bring Bjorn in to the mix. I was curious though as I am playing in the 40k team tournament on Friday, the last round doesn't end until 6:45.. Will I be able to partake in a kill team game or two that evening after that?

I'm a little saddened by the inclusion of xenos/non-30k codexes is the "30k narrative".
It is awesome to hear there is a dedicated group of 30K players. The Horus Heresy fluff is great and it makes great backdrop for narrative gaming. Your concern is something we spent a great deal of time thinking about when doing the planning for this years event. It came down to number of players.
We want to build up the event to the point where we can highlight not just 30K and 40K, but also do xenos story lines where the some of armies that don't get much fluff see some time in the spotlight. But for those game to be more than your local group in size we need critical mass of players. Our goal is to grow the event to that point.
'Work hard to create a good stage, then let the players relax and roll dice' is our motto. If inclusion of xenos and non-30k codexes is going to spoil your fun, this wasn't the event for you anyway. We'll get to the size where we can have a 30K on 30K story line. We want to grow to the point where we can put the forces in the book on the table that looks like the battle field. Think about playing one of the boards that GW or Forge World put together for Games Day. That is our dream, but it will take getting players excited about this type of gaming. That is where we are starting.
Last PM me, I want to talk it over to make sure we have the right dream for the future and would love your help in getting us there.
