Clan of the Drowned Rat - 1102.5/1500 points painted in March '14

Hello, and welcome to the insanity! I've teamed up with a friend of mine over on the Miniwargaming forums, to paint as many Skaven as possible during the month of March. I'm personally planning on setting the goal of having a 1500 point army done to a tabletop quality, and will go even further if I can! I'm sure I'll have to take a second pass at it later, as I'd like to enter it into the Golden Rat contest.

I love Clan Eshin, and I think of the Clan of the Drowned Rat as a descendent. I envision them as being very mysterious, showing up with no warning to accomplish an objective and then disappearing. Very few have seen them, and those that have are startled at their appearances in places that should take weeks or months to travel to in a matter of days, sometimes hours! I figure most of their work is done around Mordheim, which would explain their green glowing eyes and wealth. I went for a Tunnel/Cave basing scheme, and will do Dwarf and Night Goblin slaves to match. These slaves will also belong in their own armies, whether I play them or not I want to have matching armies in a theme ;)

I'll be painting them in dark colors, mainly black and red. The lower the ranking, the more color they will have (so as to draw attention away from the leadership).

Wow. They're not the best painted miniatures I've ever seen, but I'm amazed how quickly you've done them. All I've managed this month is seven Chaos Warriors...

I should have said, in case I sounded critical, that these are better than my seven Chaos Warriors too!

The green is a bit bright for my tastes, but the OSL is very impressive. How did you do it?

Thanks guys! I'll find my easy peasy tutorial and post it up. In a nutshell, I base things in Warpstone glow, highlight with Moot Green, then make a wash with Moot Green. Sometimes I have to go through and highlight them again.

I got the 35 Stormvermin done! I had a little bit of fun with these guys, and made them rank up so that the Musician faces backwards. This rat is smart enough to know that the way the music is turned down is with a knife in the back. Unfortunately he will be in trouble from whatever they meet in the front, but he knows the greater threat ;) I also modeled several of these guys with shields on their backs and arms, also as insurance against knives in the back ;)

Thanks guys! It's an army I've always been interested in, before I dove into Miniature Gaming (and GW) at all I read The Gotrek and Felix books and absolutely loved the Skaven. I'm really excited to be diving in, and I'm hoping to have 2500 painted to a high tabletop standard by May 17th. That means I'll have to knock out a bunch more stuff and take a second pass at what I've already painted.

I'm trying to get a bunch of stuff done for a 40k tournament Saturday, I'll be back to the Rats in no time! I've got a Doomwheel and Plaguewind Mortar sitting in front of me primed, demanding paint!

I'm about halfway done, I'll have to finish them next weekend. I've had a great time building and painting these, I may have gone a bit overboard on the paint standard for the rats. The bases need a touch of something more now.

Redid the banner after stripping

Here is a WIP shot of the Battle Standard Bearer Banner. I want it to represent the Storm Banner, as well as be Skaven-like (imo) with green warpstone effects.

I've also been working on painting a unit of 40 Slaves, HPA and need finishing touches on the BSB. I have an oop Grey Seer built and primed and ready for paint...but I just did a small eBay order and got a plastic one. I also got parts to build my Warplock Lightning Cannon...tank.

A Screaming Bell for your viewing pleasure! I spent WAY too many hours on this, but I think it came out well. Of course every time I look at it, I see more things I can do. What do you think? regarding the banner, your wife was right :D

I like the Stormvermin unit, very characterful, Your rats need some skellies on the bases, to represent poor victims stripped clean of flesh by the ravenous beasts....

The bell, I think you need to do some shading on those green parts, that would improve it no end.

Otherwise a great looking army to a good tabletop standard....

I so wish I had kept all my Skaven figures I had from the 90's... I want to paint some now!

So I finally sat down tonight, drank some beer, and started building some Gutter Runners. I still need to GS some cloaks, and I still have a bunch more to build. It's a start, and I was motivated since my Airbrush has broken again.

I made the slings out of thin strips of plasticard and rocks I broke up with my clippers. I got the rocks at Ikea, I think they are for plants but they are awesome for basing.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I needed to put my nose to the grindstone to finish my army in time for the tournament on November 22nd. I ended up coming in second, and also won best painted so it was worth it :) I'll update with some full army pics later.

I know it wasn't a lot of rats on the board, but I guess I did just fine. Surprisingly, I found Squeel and the Rat Ogres to be worth every point. I had only put them in because they were converted and painted. It was really nice having the Bell with the Stormvermin, people either ignored them or focused on them, really no in between. They were able to take a beating, and dish it out too. Missions were objective based, and not only were they able to hold them but the footprint was nice to push other units out of 3/6 inches. I didn't find I rolled much worthwhile on the Bell, but taking all Plague spells on the GS worked great to buff/debuff.

Gutter Runners, my Vermin Lord did I love them. Ran all over the board, causing hijinx and panic. Left a Terrorgeist with 1 wound left on the first turn (last game).

HPA's were HPA's. While I don't feel they did tons of damage, they sure were resilient and tied up other units. Surprisingly my Doomwheel did a lot of heavy lifting the first game, in games after that it was mostly attention bait.

I had a great time, I can't wait to play again.

well done mate on coming second overall and with the best Painted Army win, it shows all your hard work converting and painted has started paying off, so remember those rats breed fast so paint some more!
