Does anyone know a simple but effective way of doing ZIMMERIT on tanks? For those who don't know that is the paste that was designed to keep magnetic mines from sticking to WWII tanks (gives the sides of the take a grainy or waffled texture). I've seen pictures of conversions but not any instructions on how to?

I haven't seen it done as zimmerit, but wall spackle or joint compound would probably do the trick for a grainy texture. For a waffled look, get textured plasticard at a hobby supply shop.

All about zimmerit

I'd choose putty over plaster since it will adhere better and be less brittle

If you go to Finescale modeler.com web site you can fine a wealth of info on zimmerit. There are suppliers like tamiya who sell plastic sheets of zimmerit to place on armor models. Also there are tutorials at finescale modeler where they explain how to make your own zimmerit for armor and also how to texture it.

you can also achieve the same effect with a hot knife, basicly its a soldering iron that accepts different shaped tips. use a flat head and you can tech the zimmert into the plastic isteslf but its not forgiving.

i would make very thin cut outs of plastic card (sheet styrene) that fit over the vehicle hull panels, then use the hot knife to make the pattern, if it works glue it on the vehicle, if it dont, then cut another one.

I like smearing either Squadron Green Putty or normal Green Stuff onto the tank in the areas I want it, and using either a small flathead screw driver or a rough cut blade from a razor saw to texture.

Apply something like no more nails on the armour and then use a haircomb for the pattern. I saw it in a Tamiya Modelling Magazine.
