Hi Gang,

I'm starting this thread to highlight my painted miniatures... I broke my neck in 1986, and just recently got back into painting space marines. I do my work with the brush in my teeth, and although it's taking me ages to do anything, I am improving. I am creating my own chapter (just to make it even harder, lol :))

I've created a back story for my chapter, hope you like it...

"When man first travelled the stars to start colonization, they happened on Emraldis, a planet twice the size of Terra, which was green, lush and fertile. It was in the early days the ‘breadbasket’ of the Imperium, and fed countless worlds that were far more inhospitable. A Chapter was assigned to guard this precious haven, and in the chaos of the Horus Heresy the details of which chapter was assigned was lost.

After, the planetary forces were depleted and the Orks took full advantage. Being far out towards the rim of occupied human space, when they attacked, the Orks caused huge losses, but were ultimately held back for a generation. The Marines that were left developed very early the tactics of hit and fade away; classic guerrilla warfare. At the start of the campaign by the Orks, the chapter sent out requests for backup, but so close to the rim and the end of the Age of Strife, only the Raven Guard replied… When they arrived it was already too late to save the planet, and the remaining marines left were evacuated to a cruiser. Since they are so similar in makeup and tactics, the Exiles have become a successor chapter to Raven Guard.

As a mark to show their disgrace at not being able to hold the planet, even though no one else thinks they did, the Chapter has taken the name ‘The Exiles’ and wander space helping other Chapters to not befall the same fate as they did. Fierce warriors, the have a very Celtic heritage, and appear on the battlefield from nowhere, hit very hard and they disappear just as quickly, only to appear on another front entirely. If the foe they face is an Orkish force, then they will fight even harder (if that’s possible) until they are victorious, or every man is dead – They will never retreat again to the Orks, regardless of the cost.

Camulus Thunderborn is the current Chapter Master, and he is one of the last remaining who was a member of the original Chapter before the fall of their planet. As the chapter has no home world currently, their Fortress Monastery is aboard the Battle Barge ‘Exodus’. They do have always at least 4 cruisers out in space searching for viable initiates, mainly from Imperial Guard units. Once selected these initiates are put through even tougher examination than normal, and those few that do make it through are generally incredible fighters to start with. After their augmentation is complete, they are truly fearsome individuals."

wow I'm impressed.

May I advise that you throw a wash or two on those models, say a sepia wash over the gold and a nuln oil one on the gun. should help the recesses darken and the model to pop.

id say if you are basing the guys from green, army painter do a few new washes, blue green red and purple. paint on ones not dips.

they make shading a whole lot easier.

amazing work and great spirit to fight on and get back into the hobby despite the obvious challenges.

Thanks all for your support, it means a lot... Yes, a few washes are still needed, but limited paints/washes atm, so think its looking good for what I have so far. I'm hoping to get a few more today, so we'll see where we go from there. ;)

I showed my two boys your work and the picture of how you painted. We were very impressed. They thought it was cool how great a paint job you did and by using your teeth!
Keep it up!

I admire your courage and confidence, and you are doing a bloody fantastic job for a guy painting with his teeth, I couldn't do that with my hands a few years ago.
I've literally not smiled this much in months.
Thank you for showing us all how strong we can be.

OK, so after painting most of the day, I spent some time of photoshop creating a possible chapter symbol... What do you guys think?

I like it. It's straightforward and to the point. I love the use of the Ork's head - a lot of people forget that Orks and Space Marines have been enemies for a long time, since even before the Heresy.

Is it just me, or are GW transfers about as good as useless on shoulderpads...?

Just wasted over 20mins trying to get a tactical symbol onto a shoulderpad, and because its a complex curve it won't sit right... eventual the decal broke up while trying to position it!!!

There are two chemicals that you need to find. The first - and most important - is one that softens the decal so that it can adapt to curves more readily. The second helps the decal to attach, and is less important because the glue that comes on the transfer is actually pretty good.

The second trick - which I've never tried myself - is to hit the model with a gloss finish before you apply the decal. The gloss finish makes the model smooth, so the decal sits more smoothly on the model. You can seal it again with a dull coat (or a second gloss coat, then a dull coat) afterwards.

Hi Gang,

Well as promised here are a few more shots of my guy... He's nearly finished, all bar a few touch ups and the chapter symbol. I am waiting for the transfer paper to come in and then I'll create a load at once.

Anyways, I digress... Enjoy :)

Thanks Levaticus, I'm really enjoying creating the 'fluff' for my chapter. As their main enemy are orks, a friend and I are going to create a campaign for the retaking of Emraldis. I'm looking at creating several missions that build from ambush squads up to full on retaking the fortress monastery at the end. Will probably take me a few months/years, but as I complete each mission I'll post them on here for everyone to play...

OK guys and gals... To ease matters for me, as fine detail is currently a mare (I am getting there though) here is a transfer sheet I've put together. it fits sweetly on an A4 sheet...

Great work on the model Stephen, and I love the back story for your Chapter.

For help with the decals try looking for solvaset or micro-sol. Thos are chemicals that will soften the decals so they can fit in all sorts of odd places. You can also use vinegar to achieve the same effect. I'd recommend the vinegar approach for you, there are all sorts of video's about it on youtube.

Happy modeling.

Thanks Warmachine, the advice on using chemicals to soften the decals is very handy advice. I'm coming to the end of painting my tactical squad and a Rhino; then its transfers to the fore. I will be posting photos of all my work together shortly :)
