I get the impression from the story book that Shadowsun gets killed?

Most likely heavily injured and left with a burning passion to continue to prove the dominance of the Tau'va in the face of her barbarian opponents. Plus she had to live long enough to rename the planet Mu'galath bay...

Otherwise we probably would have heard about her dieing in the Tau Empire codex which makes mention of the battle for Agrellan several times.
