View Full Version : HEADS UP - Lounge Migration within 24 hours

The "pre migration" is already done, and we are penciling in a dead of night server migration tonight . 3-12-2014 in the AM.

There will be some down time and then we will back up on the new hardware, which is over 10x faster by both CPU and RAM.

The test lounge is performing substantially faster and you should notice a big difference.

Please pardon our mess if several little things need ironing out in the day or two following the migration.

A firmly entrenched 4 year old Vbulletin installation with a nest of plugins is not an easy piece of software to migrate. :)

Oh no! Now we're all migrants!

Whatever will the Daily Mail and UKIP say? Other than something sexist/racist/homophobic/ignorant/idiotic of course.

Status update:

We were live on the new server for an hour, then found an error and rolled back to fix it. We try again tonight.

Page load time tests are showing the lounge is loading twice as fast as before and it's getting faster as more of the forum is being cached through use. That's without any of the nitty-gritty speed optimization yet. Tomorrow we will see how it holds up under mid-day peak traffic. It should be able to handle pretty much anything we throw at it now with no slowdowns.

WOOT!

Remember though, arrhythmic kicking. Because we want a high speed BOLS. And not, you know, Sandworms.

But it's an IT hardware issue, the correct methodology is to cycle the power supply

Is everyone else getting the "are you sure you want to leave this page" message everytime you post? / "you have to wait 30 seconds between posts"

FYI: With the new server up and running it was time for a bit of spring cleaning. The primary goal was to widen what the community can chit-chat about, while reducing the amounts of overall forums, to increase reader interaction.

We have done away with a bunch of unused subforums, added a couple for up and coming games and consolidated and repurposed some others. In general the forums should now have a clearer layout with more logical groupings of similar sub-forums.

Some notes:

Video Games Lounge: Now for any and all talk of video games
Board, RPG, CCG Lounge: for talk of all such games including D&D and MtG
Malifaux Lounge: Added
Wargames Community Events and Tools Lounge: general cleanup and grouping of Events, and Player Meetup forums.

Have fun.

Using Google Chrome, right now Reply With Quote doesn't seem to actually quote the post you want to respond to. Editing seems to freeze up, to. Otherwise works great.

Vbulletin says the entire reply subsystem is very dependent on javascript versions and after a migration errors are common with old browser caches from the previous install. They say forcing a full browser cache refresh fixes most of these reply issues.

Try that and let me know if the problem remains.

Despite deleting the cache still having the leave page issue, and editing doesn't leave the edit box when you press save. though I've just discovered the edit does happen when you press save, you just remain on the edit screen.

Is this in any way consistent so we could actually test it? It's very difficult to hunt down anything that might be on our side without some ability to reproduce the problem...

If you would PM me your IP that might be helpful.

Using the "go advanced" option might be bypassing it.

Mr Mystery
03-19-2014, 04:23 AM
Dakka used to have that I think. Depends on how long after the last post you post....if that makes sense (should do!)

If it's a couple of minutes, it auto-amended the existing post. If a few hours, new post was added. I guess it prevents spamming.

I still have it... even after clearing my cache (Chrome 33 on Win XP)

Only when using a quote from somebody, when replying without the quote it works fine.

EDIT: DAMN... now even without the quote function... Only other difference I can find is that the post where it worked fine I took far longer to write it, all the other post (double) were written by me in under 30 seconds or so. Hope this helps

Guys - we are actively working this issue with vbulletin, so thanks for putting up test posts and what you are seeing in this thread. It helps to keep it all in one place.

Currently it does look like a bug with the latest version of vbulletin's "quick reply" feature and some behind-the-scenes server software.

So now we know we are working with a known issue - which is half the battle. Now comes researching the solution.

Found a new fun fault.

If I multiquote a reply.
click reply to thread.
reply.
browse then return to the thread,
then use multiquote again.
it retains the earlier multiquotes as well so keep having to delete them as well as writing a reply :D
