May be a stupid question but here goes. When a model with a combi-weapon fires overwatch can they opt to fire the special weapon element of the gun? I'm guessing the answer is yes but that you would only ever want to do this with a combi-flamer.

Yes you can.

If the thing charging is a big nasty a plasma or melta round might be useful too.

Don't forget to check if Template weapons can fire overwatch (don't think so but don't have my rulebook on hand and I always doubt myself ;) )

Template weapons have D3 hits.

Weapons that use the Flamer template may be fired on Overwatch, and are especially nasty due to the "Wall of Death" rule that inflicts d3 hits automatically on Overwatch. Weapons or modes that use the Blast/Large Blast markers, however, may not. If a weapon has a solid-shot mode (such as Krak vs. Frag missiles), you may still fire the solid-shot version on Overwatch.

Page 52 of the rulebook states that template weapons can fire overwatch and automatically inflict D3 hits. Hence my comment about combi-flamers as the reduction to BS1 for taking snap shots is not an issue. If you did the same with a combi-plasma or melta you are more likely to waste the shot.

Oh certainly, but if it is a 1 in 6 chance or being eaten by a monsterous creature I know which one I would pick...

Kombi-skorchas were always good but in Overwatch they're zoggin' awesome.

Well, it shows that I have only played 8 games in 6th edition since it came out :)

Glad that is cleared out (my CSM have a couple models with flamers), now I will try to remember it.

True enough. Thanks for clearing up my query everyone. Cheers.
