imo the special archons are actually worthwhile in the DE codex..

the duke and the baron are both 'cheap' archons that have useful special abilities, saving a few points and opening up some tactical options

nightshields on flyers are very situational, but probably worth it... ESPECIALLY if you intend to go to skimmer mode, i am actually prefering the void bomber, but i guess it depends on how you are tasking your air...

i find a unit of blasterborn can be useful {if expensive} and the extra cannons on the unit if you can squeeze them in take the heat off other units.

I generally avoid using special characters. Maybe it is holdover belief from 3rd edition where special characters required permission.

What would you look into cutting for the blasters and where would you put them?

u can sneak four blasterborn into a raider or venom and keep them as a tank hunting unit... imo if you are going to use venoms you might as well stick born in them, 5 warriors is 45 pts, three born with two blasters is only 66 pts, incubi are very situational... but so much depends on your meta and regular opponents playing style... i play v tau/de/eldar/cron/csm/nids... hardly ever imperials of any flavour and ive never played demons !

ive found that as you can take born in 3's that 3-{2splinter}/3 -{2splinter} in double cannon venoms is great for cleaning up infantry and one venom with four blaster born - single cannon only is for anti tank...

if you have got them and its not 'frowned on' then eldar allies are really useful...
