Starting myself up a WIP thread here :-P

I'll start with a few things I've finished then move onto my current projects.

2nd to the last thing I completed: A Biel-Tan waveserpent

Next post will be the current project (since I'm limited to four pics per post).

Ok, here's the current project: Deathwatch marines. I started with some heavy weapon guys, and I've made all of the arms interchangeable. The chapter sholder pads will be added on after everything is painted.

Oh that wave serpent is absolutely gorgeous and very cool take on the thorny vine motiff!

Would you be kind enough to post a walk through on the cloak for the farseer? I have been trying to pull off the same white/grey shadowed scheme for a while =/

Very, very nice. The colours on the farseer and waveserpent are incredible. Really looking forward to seeing those deathwatch painted up, and any future works you post here!

I like the style on the WAve Serpent. But I couldn't help thinking of Christmas... Maybe I have it on the brain too much!

Awesome work Pher, that is a nice white cloak on the Farseer, how'd you do it.

Pherion
12-22-2009, 06:38 PM
Thanks for the comments everyone!

The white wasn't too hard, its just about twelve layers of shading between Shadow Grey, Space Wolf Grey, and Skull White. Somewhere in there I did a wash of Space Wolf Grey to even it out, but I can't remember where! Honestly, it was my first attempt at a non-dry brushed white, so it's not as good as I had hoped, but still looks ok :-P

I've got full WIP pics of the Farseer (http://www.arolkay.com/RecentJobs/Farseer_Spear.html) and the waveserpent (http://www.arolkay.com/RecentJobs/WaveSerpent2.htm).

I'll get some pics up of the Deathwatch once I get them started :-P

Here's a quick update on the deathwatch. I've assembled a drop pod and vindicator. Though they are still partialy in peices for painting. Here's a few pics of the placement of etched brass on them.

Very nice WIPs there, I especially like the space marines. How did you make the arms interchangeable? Are those rare-earth magnets in the joints?

Pherion
12-29-2009, 05:36 PM
Rare earth magnets indeed :-P I've ordered some smaller ones that should solve the spacing problem by allowing me to set them in deeper.

Heres more: I've assembled the "extras" for the devy squad (in other words, expendable marines!)

This is a converted Stalker pattern bolter, tutorial here (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?autocom=ineo&showarticle=517)!

I like this guy, its a bit fuzzy, but it looks like he's "launching" a servo skull kinda like the CP's in Half Life launch Manhacks.

Edit: For some reason this one posted right away.... There's two other posts out there that are for some reason awaiting a mod approval... Guess they'll pop on eventually ;;

Tac Squad is done except for adding some etched brass here and there! ... I know I'm just full of updates today!

Heavy Weapon dude! Note the heavy weapon is from the devastators I previously completed. So magnet polarities are consistent. I intend for this to remain the case for the whole army. Also, I plopped the Multi-Melta with the gap in the cables on this new guy, and because the magnets are smaller, there's no gap in the cable. So I'll just keep the multi-Melta on this guy (or one of the other Tac heavy guys).
http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Tac_Marines1/12_29_09e.jpg

Sergent! Again, polarities are consistent, so these options are interchangeable with the Devastator sergeant.
http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Tac_Marines1/12_29_09f.jpg

And the special weapon guy, with a meltagun....
http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Tac_Marines1/12_29_09g.jpg

or a flamer!

Some quick updates!

I picked up some woodland scenics grasses today to experiment with for the Deathwatch bases. The idea is use the diamond flooring in conjunction with some mesh flooring. I'll put some gaps and "curbs" in between the types, and sometimes separate the same type for a crack. I want to put grass into the cracks like its overgrowing the industrial area. The grass is going to be a mixture of the brown you see below, and a little pale green. The idea is to show kinda dead grass thats just barely struggling to stay alive.

... Anyway! Here's a quick test I did on some parchment paper. I'm trying to figure out how to do different sizes of this stuff, and how to get it to bush out in different ways. If anyone's got tips or tuts on how to make this stuff act differently, please speak up :-P

http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Bases/Grass_Test1.jpg

And secondly. I've started on a commission: Salamander Terminators. I've got a base coat of green on them, its Snot Green with a Green Wash.

http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Salamander_Termies/01_04_10a.jpg

Looks like my posts from earlier just disapeared. So I'll take some time this evening and get up the WIP pics of the rest of my deathwatch.

Haven't used the magnets yet, but I've got some fun pics of the generic bolter dudes for the tac squad:

I thought it would be fun to mark my first tac squad with something special, so I gave one guy a banner!

Heres a base test I did for my Deathwatch (my plastruct came in!)

http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Bases/Base_Test1.jpg

Also, I used some 3/32 " plastruct tube, and a 1/8 " hole punch to make some shell casings. I think they still look a bit big, but they could be from the 40k equivelent of a 40 cal?

http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Bases/Shell_Casings_Test1.jpg

I'm going to try and get to the store tomorrow and get some grating type mesh to use in conjunction with the diamond plates. I've got some small L beams to use as "curbs" between the types of flooring so I can use both on the same base. We'll see how that turns out!

Grey knight primarily is completed. I added some brighter highlights to the arcs on the force weapon, and I painted the eyes. I didn't do anything on the little shield, because .... The purity seals are cool & the force weapons are great...

I like the red storm bolters too... it gives them a real pop with all the silver & gold on them.

All I have is just the plain black storm bolters...

just looking at these Knights just make me want to get & paint more Grey Knights. :D

Alright! I just finished magnetizing the drop pod! First up are the petals. I've put a single magnet on each one (and a magnet in the top portion of the pod) to hold them closed. I did this after seeing 70% of the drop pods at the local game store fall open when they weren't suppose to :-P

http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Tanks/DrooPod_01_14_10a.jpg

http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Tanks/DrooPod_01_14_10b.jpg

And here is the pod all together. Its actually being held together primarily by the magnets - its actually still in 21 different pieces.

Pherion
01-19-2010, 10:29 PM
Never really thought of it that way. I'm not really all that good at faces ;; They are usualy the last thing that I do. I'll consider this though. You are right, the face is a focal point of the model, and needs to be very expressive.

I've seen GW paint them up both caucasian skinned, dark brown skinned, and (most commonly) jet black skinned. I wouldn't worry about it too much though. Lots of people go with dark brown for aesthetic reasons. I think it looks better like it is :)

Alright, trying to squeeze in a project between commissions (since I have two days off due to snow!)

Deathwatch Land Speeder!

Here's the start of the base. The idea is to have it looking like a Genestealer is bursting up out of the grating to attack the speeder.

Update time! Rangers are done, just no pics of them yet.

First up is something for my army! Eldar support weapons. I've got them fully magnetized so they are swapable. That just means that I have to paint up my vibro cannons, and get a hold of two more shadow weavers!
http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/SupportWeapons/03_14_10a.jpg

Next up is a commission. Two exarchs, one a striking scorpion, and the other a howling banshee. These will be fun to do, since there's only one of each I should be able to pay a bit more attention to them!
http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Commissions/Exarchs/03_14_10.jpg

And another commission! The infamous corpse cart! This will just be flat out fun, I mean - Who doesn't want to paint a bunch of bloodied corpses!?

And a fun close up of the shading on the gold:

Keep an eye out for updates! I'll probably be plowing through the support weapons this week in anticipation of an upcoming tournament.

Been a while! But I've got some pics of the beginning of my Vindicator:

Here is the completed red. Started with a mix of black and Red Gore, it was highlighted up to pure Red Gore.
http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Tanks/Vindicator_04_28_10a.jpg

And here the black is completed! Base coated with a mix between Codex Grey and Black. Only the recesses were left at the primer color. The final highlights were still a mix, but closer to pure Codex Grey.
http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Tanks/Vindicator_04_28_10b.jpg

And finally! I've done the silver. Simply Boltgun Metal with a black wash. I may highlight or shade more depending on how it looks after it dries fully.

Terminator Time!

After much searching and sniping on Ebay, I managed to get a hold of a shooty Terminator box, a full set of TH/SSs, and two pairs of lightning claws. Here's the results!

The interchangeability was a bit differnt this time. Because chapter specific termy pads are so hard to get a hold of (I have some coming from Forge World), it was very hard to get enough to just tack them onto every arm. So for this project, the shoulder pads are also interchangeable!

We start by seting a large (thin) magnet into the arm and the body of the termy. This serves to hold the arm to the body.

http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Terminators/Innerchange_Test_2a.jpg

We then drill a hole into the shoulder itself, and set a magnet in the shoulder pad. The large thin magnet in the arm matches polarities with the shoulder pad magnet, and the magnetic field is large enough to pull them together even if they don't touch. So it'll hold the pad on as well. Problem solved!

http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Terminators/Innerchange_Test_2b.jpg

Now some pics of the squad! First up a nice shot of the shooty squad!

http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Terminators/05_29_10b.jpg

Then poof! They become assault termies O.o

I'm still waiting on the forge world order to come in so I can finish up shoulder pads, and I also ordered 5 of those awesome Inquisition termy pads, so no honors pads on these guys! Here though are a few pics to demonstrate how the pads fit in (with the plastic bits that I have)

Heavy Flamer
Cyclone Missile Launcher
2 Pairs of Lightning Claws
Chainfist
Powerfist
