I have an old Rapier Laser Battery and was wondering if I should base it . And if so what size would I need?

well, The rules state you can always have a bigger base than is necessary, why not go with a dreadnought base so you can have a gunner model on with it. or does it have two?

Forge World holds domain over the Rapier Batteries now, and they don't have bases. So a base isn't exactly necessary, at the moment anyway. If it were to get one, I'd guess at least a Terminator (40mm) base, though they might use the new Hive Guard (50mm) base. I'm of the opinion that crew and their artillery should remain separate pieces, not be on a combined base. It just makes me feel better. They're two different stat lines, so I like them represented as two individual pieces on individual bases.

The onyl rule on bases is that models should be affixed to them if they come supplied with them. If I were to based I would be looking at something like the large round bases, the same size as the IG heavy weapons team sized.

If you are wanting the base for a cool modelling option all very well. But be prepared to let people measure to the base - you will actually be disadavantaging yourself.

Yeah, and being a dummy I bought bases for my non based Heavy weapon teams (dumb move cos now a S6 weapon ID's them) :( D'oh.

I'll point out one advantage to basing artillery pieces: line of sight. I don't know how tall a Rapier is, but I have some older ork artillery that can find their line of sight blocked by quite low barriers if not based (and remember, the gun model has to be able to see the target too). Having them on a base gives them a little extra height that I find to be helpful. YMMV depending on the terrain you use, of course, but when all the gunners have the height of a base to stand upon and many terrain pieces have the height of a base as well, I don't feel bad about leveling the playing field for my gunz in that regard.
