The first of many...

All the bugs! (some notes on painting my space hulk Genestealers here (http://spiralingcadaver.blogspot.com/2014/02/is-gigeresque-word-space-hulk.html))

wow they are amazing, though you might want to take photo's of them against a white backdrop so we can see the great paintjobs you have done a bit better....

Thanks!

I might try white again, but I always felt like it blew out my paint jobs w/ too much reflected light

hmm, perhaps blue then, I notice a lot of the profesional photographers use blue in their portreits....

I keep getting reminded (like now) that I want to try a nice mottled grey backdrop, but then keep forgetting to get one (like when I go to an art store)...

gorgeous. Simply.. gorgeous.

I think the black works with this to give an air of the gene stealers pouncing out from the shadows. Really nicely painted, with a real sense of 'something terrifying coming out of the shadows to eat you' about them!

spiralingcadaver
02-05-2014, 09:07 PM
Thanks!

-Tom-, yeah, I started using black b/c of the issue with my white backdrop blowing out the images, but stuck with it b/c it was atmospheric for Malifaux stuff (which also happened to look nice on those Genestealers).

Back to my roots, with Death Guard- I had around 4,000 points of Nurgle-themed Lost and the Damned at one point... beginning again (http://spiralingcadaver.blogspot.com/2014/02/all-is-rust-plague-marine-color-test.html).

Thanks! Yeah, I'm hoping to have her painted in the next week or so.

That Canoness is stunning. I don't like the axe, but that's a purely personal aesthetic choice; in terms of composition, that model is flawless. Great work.

05-06-2014, 05:15 PM
Thanks! (Sorry I didn't get back sooner). Got some artist's block, but getting back into things, hoping to have her done soon.

For now, my first Alpha Legionaire, with some notes (http://spiralingcadaver.blogspot.com/2014/05/cloak-dagger-alpha-legion-champion.html).

I don't mean the paint job or modeling, that's brilliant :D

I love the dark color palette you've used on the genestealers. They look exactly as if they're in the dark recesses of a drifting space hulk. I'm also looking forward to seeing what you continue to do with your Death Guard.

spiralingcadaver
05-12-2014, 02:08 PM
Thanks! Yeah, CSMs were my favorites, glad to be getting back in to them.

Useless, thanks- those guys took like 5 paint jobs to get them right (kept looking too cartoony or organic).

Re: DG- Aks, and, etc...

Just finished some gross obliterators (notes (http://spiralingcadaver.blogspot.com/2014/05/heavy-metal-poisoning-death-guard.html), as usual):

You need to do some video tutorials. I've never figured out how to make large, dark areas looks as good as they do on your genestealers.

Crimson, I'm not a fan of video tutorials, but have gotten a few requests recently for tutorials- will try to do some photo ones soon.

Oh, sorry for the delay responding- thanks! Yeah, I'm planning on re-doing my current DG/plague marines in the old colors, since I was really happy with how it came out.

Also, my first (of many) Astral Claws squad, beginning an army which I'd been meaning to start for ages. (Notes (http://spiralingcadaver.blogspot.com/2014/06/gotta-start-somewhere-astral-claws.html))

I've got that vintage captain in my army too!

I've always liked the Astral Claws and yours are no exception. Can't wait to see more of the army.

spiralingcadaver
06-25-2014, 11:33 AM
Thanks, both of you-

Darren, yeah, love that old model. I think it's my favorite 2nd edition model.

Levaticus, thanks, I'm hoping to eventually make a giant Maelstrom force, but settling for a slow expansion for now...

Forgot this one from a little bit back- the Caestus is one of my favorite sci-fi vehicles ever- this one got a fun photoshopped FX shot, because of it, too. (Notes (http://spiralingcadaver.blogspot.com/2014/05/running-gauntlet-death-guard-caestus.html))

your latest batch is amazing, the highlight for me has gotta be the Captain, his shield is stunning, was it kitbashed?

spiralingcadaver
07-22-2014, 12:16 PM
Thanks!

And yeah, the captain was a kitbash (I listed the specific parts in the linked post, but he's mostly based on a LE forgeworld marine from maybe 3 years back (I'm scared to check if he's older and I'm losing track of time)). Also, he's definitely my favorite work I've done on a GW model.

spiralingcadaver

Ohh wow, are those Plastic RTB01 figures mixed with Metal RT figures? because they are awsome, I recoginise the Medic figure in there.

You really have made these classics POP with the detail you've painted on them, it makes them stand out as being on par with current figures despite being very primative sculpts.

spiralingcadaver
08-03-2014, 10:33 AM
Hehe, yep. I did a bit of converting because I hate the awkward torso join on the plastics and wanted some more variety.

And yeah, I think those old minis are pretty good, despite their age. I wouldn't say "on par," but I do think they look a lot nicer with modern technique (actual shading and decent photography) goes a long way towards bringing them up.

spiralingcadaver
08-15-2014, 10:54 AM

I've always thought their unnatural love of skulls is a not so subtle artistic reminder of of how cheap life is in the various GW settings.
Skulls are the basic building material used in any good Imperial construction project. A very abundant, renewable resource.

spiralingcadaver
10-22-2014, 11:46 AM
Thanks, and yeah, the volume of skulls on the space hulk scenery is absurd- I kinda' thought they were going for a catacombs sort of thing but, being GW, it's just as likely that they felt like there just weren't enough skulls yet.

Darren Richardson
10-22-2014, 05:08 PM
yeah, I sometimes feel like they've spent to much time at that cathedral in Prague with all the bone furniture, who knows, maybe it will still exist in the 31st Millienium and the Emperor took notes :)

On a serious note, yoru work continues to be amazing (incase I haven't said that recently)

Thanks-- yeah, it was probably the most finnicky/pain-in-the-*** detail work I've sculpted but I'm pretty happy with it

So, some time back I did a test for these guys, but now they're up to a playable squad. More to follow. (A few notes, and their first mini-battle report... (http://spiralingcadaver.blogspot.com/2015/05/raids-on-edge-of-maelstrom-night-lords.html))

So, this was quite the project- basically covered in textured freehand, though I think my favorite parts were the fire and crown. (Notes (http://spiralingcadaver.blogspot.com/2015/07/i-went-down-down-down-forge-world-avatar.html))

Yeah, I wasn't really sure how he'd come out when I got started, but it was one of those projects where the last 10% of the work felt like it doubled how well it came together.

that can be so annoying. I hate it when you are painting something, looking at it thinking nope, this sucks. then the final touches, and there it is, exactly what you wanted.
