I’m deliriously pleased to announce that iToysoldiers (http://itoysoldiers.com) is ready for prime time! Over the last while I’ve been building a website for miniature war game addicts. iToysoldiers lets you track the results of your battles, show off pictures of your armies, and tells us your thoughts on the hobby in general. The best bit? iToysoldiers is system agnostic! Whether you play Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Warhammer 40k, Warmachine/Hordes, X-Wing, or any other game we’ve got you covered. The even better bit? iToysoldiers is free. Yep! I’m never going to charge my gamer friends to use the site.

Chronicle the glories of your little toy soldiers
I’m a stats nerd. I love looking at how this compares to that, my DPS, my best results against certain opponents and computer games provide this kinda thing. I also (shamefully) admit that I adore getting achievements, badges, and tokens for various accomplishments. It’s a kinda Pavlov thing, I’m sure. Computer games provide this sort of feedback. Miniature war games, which are so much more fun, don’t. Why should computer gamers have all the stat laden goodness? Well. They’re not the only ones anymore. I built iToysoldiers to provide statistics and game tracking/battle reports for miniature war games. As I was building it I figured that the whole story telling element – important to most of us – could totally be addressed at the same time so…

Not only can you enter the results of your battles, but you can also post pictures, write up your thoughts on your army, rules, etc. Take a look at some of the galleries: http://itoysoldiers.com/galleries. Peruse the blogs: http://itoysoldiers.com/blog. Check out the battles: http://itoysoldiers.com/battles. And of course… Stats: http://itoysoldiers.com/stats.
iToysoldiers is a work of love. Love of miniatures and love of tabletop games. If you’ve got any ideas for improvements or changes or you just want to chatter I’m all ears at [email protected]. Take a look around the site. See what iToysoldiers has to offer. I am to please.

Why should computer gamers have all the stat laden goodness?

Join Us

So there’s the pitch. Sound cool? I’d love for you to join us. All you have to do is zip over to http://itoysoldiers.com/user/register and sign up. Important: The site does require you to confirm your email and some providers are pretty draconian with their spam filter so make sure you add [email protected] to your safe senders list so you can get the confirmation email. If you sign up and don’t receive one, drop me a line and we’ll get you sorted.

Many thanks, my gamer friends. Hope to see you on the site.

Rob.

What's happening at iToysoldiers? Glad you asked!

Greetings, Warmongers! It’s been a bitsy since the last ITS development update so I figured I’d ramble a bit about what’s been going on. A brief glance at the site will pretty much sum it up: the new layout/theme/whathaveyou is more or less fully implemented. I think it looks pretty good. Still needs some tweaking here and there and some of the displays are still in the old style but overall it’s pretty much working fabulously. The main reason I went this route is to support mobile devices a bit better. And boy howdy! It’s night and day! If you haven’t yet, take a gander at the site on your phone or tablet. WAY BETTER.

So playing with the layout isn’t the only thing I’ve been up to. There was a little bit of chaos around the Swiss League system that I think I’ve pretty much nailed. We’ll see how that goes when the next round is generated. I’m also working on a full featured management console for the league organizer. Since I’ve been doing most of the management it hasn’t been an issue but eventually I’d like to see more people take advantage of it and that means I can’t be the only one who can do fancy things on the back end. I’ll keep you posted as that progresses.

Oh! And another cool thing I added was the ability to like individual images in galleries! I haven’t done much with this yet but I have some cool ideas on how to make use of the likes for things like painting competitions and that sort of thing. If you have a moment you might want to go through some of the galleries and let your fellow warmongers know which of their pictures are cool.

That’s what’s been going on. What are the near term plans? Well, first off, I’m getting another batch of achievement icons! Those’ll be put in place along with some new achievements. I’m going to be doing some improvements on the achievements in general so that a) they record more accurately and b) they can be generated automatically (wouldn’t it be neat to get an achievement for winning a league? Or how about a unique achievement for the monthly battle champion each month? It can be done. Oh yes, it can be done!). I’m also working on some new widgets for you fine folks to place on your blogs and web pages. So many cool ideas!

As I’m getting so much closer to having the league functionality pretty much working right (including a management panel for those who’re using ITS to run their events) I’ve been thinking about the kind of things I want to put in place to benefit the true heroes of the hobby: the local game store. So here’s my stream of consciousness ramble on the topic:

I’ve got some pretty slick ideas, actually. The first is for the Local Game Store (LGS) folks can use their ITS accounts to “claim” a battle field and add some additional information like store hours, links to their websites, and stuff like that. I’d also like to give ‘em the ability to co-brand relevant pages with their banner or image or something. I’m actually working on a widget that can be placed on a website/blog that shows the status of a league running on ITS so folks can use it to pimp their leagues/events that are running on ITS. More? Yep. I’m considering the mechanics of providing a “Pay Where You Play” achievement. Something like a code one can submit to ITS and they’ll get an achievement for buying stuff at their LGS. Yeah, and along the lines of leagues: Achievements that are unique to leagues.
