I want to get an audio book to listen to while painting. I have never read/listened to any of the Warhammer books, fantasy or 40K. I would greatly appreciate some suggestions to get me started.

Thank you,

Practically the entire Horus Heresy series is on audio-book format available at Black Library. Just buy them all or one at a time and go from there. I'm not much for audio books. When I paint, I usually have either a movie on in the background or a battle report from MWG or BoLs.

horus heresy jams are great also recommend. but truth when i paint i like utter silence so i can contemplate the horror of the 41st millenium. . also it contrasts the 120 db enviroment at my work

I can't take any of the audio books seriously. When I'n reading them myself I can rationalise all the bolter porn as mindless fun, but when some super serious old dude is reading it incredibly slowly and solemnly with poor quality sound effects in the background I just cringe up

I have the top 100 sci-fi classics downloaded. They're just better.
I like the BL stuff too, I just like the classics better.
If it's HH then go fantasy, as the sound effects are better.

The quality of any audiobook is directly linked to the skill of the person reading it. I've listened to a number of non-40k audiobooks, and if Jim Dale was reading these I'd buy every one. I know that Stephen Fry is quite popular as well. Unfortunately the Horus Heresy audiobooks seem to be read by different people so there's really no way to know which books are worth listening too, and which should you read yourself.

The James Swallow written Garro series of audio books are well read imo as they are dramatically produced with key sound effects complimenting the action nicely. Sword of Truth is a good 2 disc story and Legion of One is good but too short. Gav Thoroes Mission Purge is also a well dramatized story. Horus Heresy audio books are ok but the abridged versions leave out great big chunk s of story compared to the books and while read competently the lack of background sfx irritates me.
I tend to listen in the car on my hour commute to work and have started two great themed projects inspired by these tales.
