Please check to make sure I am reading these supplements correctly. Stronghold Assault is a set of "optional rules" as stated in the building an army section of that book. So "You should agree with your opponent before the battle begins whether to use some, or all of these updates." before playing these rules in a regular game of 40K. Escalation doesn't include the "optional rules" disclaimer and thus can be included in regular games of 40K without agreement. Is that right?

troll disclaimer: I know you should always agree to terms of a friendly game of 40K and I am not expressing my opinion on rules, just trying to understand what I am reading. I am not bringing a Reverent Titan to my next FLGS pickup game.

That maybe right, but as you worte yourself in your trollclaimer: You and your opponent have to agree, what youŽll play. For example: You have a 2K army with normal 40K setting in mind, and youŽll forgot to tell this your opponent. Than it can occour, that he brings a reaver and an a handful of other models to the match.

While you both set up your army, youŽll notice that his army is a one model army. IF you both will play anyway, it should be totally possible, that you kill 540 pts other stuff while the reaver lays a maximum of eight 5" pies of 2+ instakill per round. Maybe you manage to to kick the reaver with some meltashoots or whatever, maybe he roastes your army in turn 3. Anyway: Will you play again? Vs that reaver army of one and a bunch, if you have a game of normal 40K in mind?

So things will settle itself.

Maybe you both want to field a reaver, that will even the odds in is rather boring @ 2K ... youŽll could get up to 3K and hey, you could play apoc anyway ;-)

Technically, no. Stronghold Assault and Escalation are both part of the Core rules. Just like Forgeworld. However, like Forge World, many people agree not to use them. They are however fully intended to be a part of the game, they are not like Planetstrike where it's a separate game. But, many people will not be using them.

I think where I have landed is both books are "You should agree with your opponent before..." rules. My guess is at some point they where in the same book and they lost the txt in editing.
