Melta Bombs

New to 40k and just trying to fill in some holes as far as my overall knowledge goes.

As I understand it, melta bombs act like grenades. So can they only be used during the assault phase? Is there a more ranged method of employing a melta bomb? It seems like a poor idea to get face to face with something you intend to blow up, but I guess we've all looked into that dark can of gasoline with a lit match before.

Only used in assault and, as they only have rules for being used against vehicles, only in assault against vehicles. Does this run the risk that the vehicle will explode and kill the bearer? Yes, indeed! There is no way to use a melta bomb at range at present, although in theory, if a future codex could include explicit rules for such.

I think in terms of fluff melta bombs are not quite grenades - you don't throw them. They are more like a directional explosive that you attach to an object magnetically or something. You stick them to a vehicle and then duck and cover as they go BOOM!

I think it would be cool if you could clamp 'em to marine champion's legs and melt the buggers ;)

Though, just to be clear for the new player in our midst, rules-wise, melta bombs are grenades. Fluff-wise, krak grenades also need to be attached to the target magnetically or otherwise (though fluff-wise, krak grenades can also be shot from grenade launchers, and a few units in the game have rules for this).

i remember the good old RT days all grenades were throwable - lol that was fun ;)

also when multi meltas had area templates hehe - thats actually one thing i miss now :(

ah yes the days of melta missiles and two kinds of krak rockets, both with templates iirc... various ammo was nice. Rose coloured glasses help a little though :)

Yeah, its called a Melta Gun!

Just pretend the gun is a bomb and you're set :)
