Can tyranids occupy and hence allow the guns on the firestorm redoubt to auto fire? I am thinking no since ultimately they are emplaced weapons even if they auto fire.

Thoughts?

I think yes, the emplaced weapons may auto fire at BS2.
It is hard to think of the a background justification for it, but the tyranid FAQ (included below) only prevents the lovely 'nids from firing the weapons manually, not from firing altogether.

instinctive behaviour tests? Furthermore, are they able to manual fire
emplaced weapons or weapon emplacements?
A: No to both questions.

I still think no since the weapons are emplaced on the bunker

The weapons are indeed emplaced. So what? The FAQ specifically mentions manual fire.
Rulebook page 96
Manual fire: If a building is occupied, A MODEL WITHIN can choose to fire one of the emplaced weapons". That is what tyranids cannot do.
Automated fire: "If a building is occupied, each emplaced weapon that is not being fired manually...". You only have to occupy the building for auto-fire to work.

Personally i think 'nids should be able to use guns manually too. Many players convert their own fortifications anyway, so an infested quad-gun or living equivalent is not too hard to imagine. Oh, well...

That will depend on the new codex and whether or not they give us Genestealer hybrids.

With the new Stronghold Assault, there is the new rule for 'claimed' buildings which would allow an unoccupied fortification purchased by one side to use the 'Sentry Defence System' special rule to autofire.
