Astarte??????

The word Astartes: I'm confused about the origins, does it come from the goddess Astarte? I know that she was sometimes associated with war, but it wasn't her main deal, and then you've got dozens of other versions of her, how does it connect to the word? How did GW decide on this name?

Astarte is bad latin for "star." The Adeptus Astartes are the "adepts of the stars" representing their role as explorers and conquerers in the name of the Emperor.

I prefer the use of Astarte as in the Egyptian warrior goddess.

It could be a simple transpositional error, Astartes instead of Astrates

Though to be honest, as is very common with GW, the rule of cool works. So it sounds good and almost like it is right so we'll use it, if anyone complains that it is made up or we are misusing the subjunctive then we shall point out that High Gothic is not Latin, despite how it looks...

I think they just thought it sounded cool and "latin-y" so went with it, it comes from a time when the game was sillier and not as sophsticated and big as it is now
