I was also asked for some more details on the steps involved in creating this effect and getting the model to this point. Now that I look back through my notes its a few more steps than I thought I did. Total time so far actively working on it, 5 hours.

Step 1: Making the metal layer that came off the assembly line.

-Citadel Ironbreaker airbrushed
-Runefang Steel highlight airbrushed
-50:50 mix of sepia / agrax earthshade wash airbrushed
-Ironbreaker drybrush
-Seal this layer with a gloss clear coat
-Add some AK heavy chipping fluids to select spots that you are going to want to chip down to and expose the metal layer.

Step 2: Making the rust

-Minitaire cracked leather airbrushed
-Minitaire muddy brown airbrushed
-Minitaire pumpkin / cracked leather mix airbrushed
-Minitaire pumpkin airbrushed
-Minitaire inards airbrushed
-fuegan and sepia wash brushed on
-Minitaire cracked leather sponged on
-Minitaire muddy brown sponged on

Step 3: Chipping down to the bare metal

-Drip water on the parts of the model that you applied the AK chipping fluid. Take off scratches / chunks gently with a hobby knife and a toothbrush.
-After the model dries, seal with another layer of gloss clear coat
-Add some AK heavy chipping fluids to select spots that you are going to want to chip down to and expose the rust layer and original metal.
-Drip some water onto the model or use the AK while its still wet, add salt to this. This is going to end up being the pock marked holes to the rust through the paint.

Step 4: What color came off the assembly line?

-Minitaire mummy airbrushed
-Minitaire cracked leather airbrushed on the armor ridges and chaos star
-Minitaire skull white airbrushed on

Step 5: Chipping down to the rust and metal

-Scrub some salt off with your hand / dry brush.
-Drip water on the parts of the model that you applied the AK chipping fluid. Take off scratches / chunks gently with a hobby knife and a toothbrush.

-Seal with gloss if you are going to detail the armor more, seal with matte (because shiny rust looks odd…) if you are done.

Next steps?

I haven’t finished the model yet, it currently sits as you see it with the chipping done to the white ‘original’ paint. Not sure what other details I want to do to this. My thoughts are to do a few different shades of bronze on the raised armor plates and chaos star, and then do the chipping method to them to get it down to the rust / metal layer. Then I want to paint the tan on the smoke stacks to silvers and do some of the new Nurgle’s Rot green paint coming out of the stacks. I also have some AK streaking grime and some of the new citadel Nihilakh Oxide that I was thinking of streaking down from the darker spots of rust.

Can't find any of the pics I took at the silver layer, so I will jump in here with the rust layer done.

Next steps:

Matte coat, AK chipping on parts of the raised armor, chaos star, gold paints, chipping, Matte.

THOUGHTS?!

I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I am liking this a decent amount. I am already nit picking over details and planning better for the next time I do this. Up to this point this has been ~12 coats of primer, paints, gloss coats, chipping fluids... worth it?!

I have yet to do the bronze on the armor ridges and raised edges around the armor (like I would on a regular CSM troop). I was actually thinking about doing some silver on the stacks and some of the new citadel ooze paint coming out of the stacks. Additionally I want do some of the AK streaking grime or some of the new citadel corrosion Rob shows coming down from the rust. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRF-tUlZRu8 Thoughts?

This is amazing, can we get a step-by-step tutorial on this?
