Though how old must it be looking at the consoles?

Not just looking at the consoles, but having split-screen... It seems a lot of the newer games have been dropping split-screen.

I like my X-Box 360 and One (and even the Wii, when it's not deciding to be dead), but acting like they're superior to a PC is silly. Yeah, I spent around a thousand dollars on my PC, but it's also so I can run two monitors, run a bunch of productivity programs without slowing down, and haven't have to upgrade in years, while still able to run games at really high graphics settings without issue. On my PC I can play games like This War of Mine, Cities: Skylines, Mordheim, Warmachine Tactics, the Total War series, most MMOs, indie games like Shoppe Keep or Game Dev Tycoon, and I can mod the heck out of games. I can also expand my storage easier and cheaper. My XBox One doesn't have many games on it but already has a good chunk of its hard drive used up. On PC I can switch between keyboard/mouse, controller, joystick, or steering wheel pretty easily, and have lots of options for each. Oh, and I can actually do all that productivity stuff on my computer.

Consoles are made for casual gaming. I like my consoles for that (and for using YouTube or Netflix on the couch), but it's silly to act like they're superior to PCs.

Went back on fallout 4 for a couple of hours last night. They seem to have added a new quest to the cicular ones "Build defences at this settlement" which is ok but I've already built defences at my settlements so I just stand there for like three minutes and then it triggers 100% and then an attack by one one of the factions.
Seems one of the patches has added a few new odds and ends in the build menu as well. You can now live like a supermutant under canvas surrounded by bloody bags of body parts :D

pretty much. loads of options to kit your craft, all valid and fun, loads of combinations. steadily ramps up the enemies as you score more points. I finally managed to kill the blimp boss this evening, and what did I get for my troubles? hard mode. all the hard enemies from the beginning, in far greater numbers, and firing far more shots.

I started playing Grim Dawn yesterday as well. what I think of as Titan Quest style game, but everyone else calls Diablo-esque :p

it is actually made by some of the old Titan Quest team though. I bought it on early access from Steam, but waited until it was finished to play it. looks great, good combat, and surprisingly modern and varied soundtrack. the music has really grabbed me. possibly a bit easy so far, only the first two difficulty levels (of four) are available from the beginning, but I am really enjoying it. you can use a gamepad, but it doesn't tell you how to actually use it. initially it seemed like I needed to use the mouse as well, but eventually found that if you click the right stick, it becomes a mouse cursor, and the left and right triggers act as left and right mouse buttons.

I grabbed Black Desert Online, and have had fun with it (through about six hours). It's definitely a more involved game than something like WoW, but with a lot less hand-holding, too, so I need to find some good guides. I do like how the combination of NPCs, PCs, PCs' workers, etc. creates a feel of a world that's "lived in." I've been hanging around the first town I came to, running around it doing all kinds of stuff.

The Energy system is a bit rough when you're used to a lot of freedom. You have a certain amount that regens over time and you'll get some back with quests. It's used for gathering, crafting, certain conversations, and other stuff. You also spend Energy to post comments in the General chat, and requesting a chat ban review will chew half your Energy instantly (probably to prevent people from abusing it). So rather than do that with the people posting ads for websites, it's better to just Block them (no Energy cost).

I'm tempted by Division... but that'll have to come down the line.

Sadly, after just having replaced a monitor that decided to go bad, there was a freak accident with my desktop PC. Some Monster got in it, caused a quick enough short to cause it to shut itself off. I tried cleaning it all out with the limited stuff I have available, but it seems the CPU and/or mobo might have been wrecked, so now I have to go get a new pair. Pretty sure the rest is okay, though. RAM might be questionable, but I think I cleaned it well enough. Video card is pretty well covered, didn't seem to be much get over where the drives were. Everything powers on now, but the CPU LED stays red and there's no BIOS beep.

testing out the Battlefleet Gothic: Armada beta, and while I'm not straight up bouncing with excitement it's definitely a good game and well-done adaptation.
Graphics are, for me, kinda meh - I was hoping for much better textures from the trailers, but it's nowhere near bad enough to really be a negative point, just also nowhere near good enough to be a real positive. They just are what they are.
Good performance for a beta, and haven't seen any real bugs.
Ship handling feels appropriately sluggish but they do have an extra maneuvering gauge used both for All Ahead Full and High Speed Turns, which allows for some fancy maneuvering when needed - well done there! Weapons are also a decent adaptation from the TT, including infinite-range torpedoes zooming across the map, various small craft, firing angles for various weapons are present as are differing efficiencies at varying ranges. Feels nicely like BFG.
Campaign looks to have some pretty cool mechanics, and there's a kind of persistent-progression system for both single player skirmishes and multiplayer.

The Division has gotten quite low review scores for such a big release. I am still tempted though, sounds pretty interesting.

I believe it's had some launch issues, and is pretty much just like a normal shooter, only third-person instead of first-person, with limited maps and minor RPG elements added. That's not to say it can't be fun (I think it might be fun to play), but it does seem a little underwhelming given all the hype it's built up. I found a video from two years ago with footage... this one's been coming a long time, it would have had to be revolutionary not to be a let down. So merely being "fun to play" might not get it great reviews.

had a bit of a binge on old games, and a new one. was keeping a load of 360 games in the hopes that they become backwards compatible on Xbox One, then last weekend thought, wait, I can just get them on PC for a few quid each. saves me shelf space and hanging on to stuff that may or not be playable. so I picked up the two Lords of Shadow games, Shadow Complex Remastered, Kingdoms of Amalur, Future Soldier, and the new Salt and Sanctuary on PS4. 2D Dark Souls, looks awesome.

03-18-2016, 05:52 AM
I did, really enjoying it so far. bit more variation than the previous one. Not quite as much variation as I had hoped in the soldier classes, but that might change later with added abilities. some really great changes cancelled out by some bad ones. a lot of missions you start the game in concealment, so the enemy doesn't know you are there, and the grid is clearly marked with where they can detect. so you can set up ambushes using overwatch. get your soldiers surrounding them, then move one in to sight, they all scatter like they did in the previous game, and trigger your overwatch. very satisfying when it works. on the downside, once you are detected, all the enemies have detected you, it isn't isolated to an area of the map. also, a great many missions have a turn limit, so the concealment allows a stealthy approach, but you need to move forward a lot...

Not sure. I think so, but when I see gameplay videos, it seems like it's not too bad if you use the varying elevations and stuff. But I might just be thinking of the "Dark Zone."

or me, I've gone through XCOM2 in its entirety. Brilliant game that. And I even liked the turn timers a lot, in the context of the rest of the game - they don't usually force you into suicide, but they also apply a bit of pressure on you to prevent the old boring Overwatch creep. And the amount of pressure feels like it's usually just right, at least to me and also depending a bit on the map you roll up. Procedurally generated maps (and really good they are too!) instantly double the quality of the game compared to EU/EW, and there's sooooo many little details that further make the game great...

Kirsten
03-18-2016, 06:56 PM
I haven't struggled with the timers so far, they do seem to be pretty well worked out. but I do resent them being there, especially when it is giving you the option for a stealthy approach. it is a shame there isn't an extra class or two in there, but they do seem a bit more varied than in Enemy Unknown, I am liking them so far. I think the DLC adds a class per pack as well

Tyrendian
03-19-2016, 04:16 AM
yeah the five classes we have are maybe a bit few, even though they are very nicely done imho. But, let's not forget the awesome amount of modding support XCOM2 has.
Hate the timers? There's a mod for that (or rather a bunch of mods that do everything from make them longer, to make them start only when you are revealed, to kill them entirely).
Hate the fact that there's even a way to lose the game via doomsday mechanic? Mod it.
Want more classes? Mods (you'll have to find reasonably balanced ones yourself tho, if you want that is).
Want a different UI? Mods.
Want even more map variety? Mods.
Want a humungous Sombrero for your elite strike team to wear? Mod.
Want a gun that shoots Corgis? That was literally the very first mod that appeared in the Steam Workshop.

Kirsten

I am liking Primal so far, absolutely beautiful, and a nice combination of familiar gameplay with a new wild setting. Battlefleet Gothic is not what I expected, it isn't turn based, which is crazy. Plus it took me ages to realise that once you start attacking an enemy ship your ship will move about on its' own according to what mode it is in. so they start circling each other. seems like it might rather take the strategy out really, but we shall see.

Tyrendian
03-25-2016, 05:07 AM
well you can still order moves manually and your ship will fire - and you can set priorities for enemy vessels so that your guys focus their fire on the right target...

I know, but the fact they just fly around shooting by themselves kinda spoils it a bit for me. I may well still enjoy it, it looks like it could be good. I just need to get it right in my head that it isn't actually Battlefleet Gothic you are playing, it is a different game in the same universe.

Yeah, it's got an interesting story to it, some quests, and the reward is kind of nice. The quest to locate it is kind of random to come across, but will help you locate it. There's a kid on a pier, I think near the General Atomics Factory? Says there's a sea monster that pokes up its eye, and that gives you the quest to investigate, which marks it on your map.

Also, since there's water involved, remember to keep some Rad-X/Rad-Away around, just in case.

Sounds like it could still be a fun game. On the plus side, being different from the tabletop game means people won't skip on the tabletop game when it finally returns.

Though I suppose I'll have to come up with new tactics, because using Cobras' torpedoes to direct enemy ships where I want them to do likely isn't going to be as viable with this system.

continuing my mission of adding games to my library for a few pounds each, I picked up Ryse. Unfortunately just a bit bland. looks nice, but every single enemy is killed essentially the same way, and with a quick time event execution. there isn't much variation, and by the end of the first mission you are already sick of seeing them. it was going to be a kinect game, and they ditched that at the last minute and just went with standard controls. whilst waving your arms about stabbing people would have been fun, with a control pad it just lacks depth.

Also bought Spec Ops the line, one of last gen's finest shooters. but the Steam code I ordered on ebay wont work over here, and the seller is wanting me to jump through a ridiculous number of hoops for a £2.99 key. screenshot of the error message, screenshot of my steam library, of my list of licenses, of my IP address, all to confirm I really haven't used it.

I've got a SteelSeries mouse, made for WoW around the time of Cataclysm, similar concept. It's pretty good sized, and has a comfortable area to rest the thumb in. Makes playing anything great.

I also have what I later realized was a gaming mouse that I use at work (personal mouse... the one supplied was a cheap extremely basic mouse). It's a Logitech mouse with an area for the thumb, so much easier to hold and use during the day. Bonus, the two buttons above the thumb area can be used for Forward/Back in a browser or Windows Explorer, which is very useful when your job involves a lot of file management and page viewing. (Same with the Cata mouse, but it's got something like thirteen buttons or so.)

Meanwhile, my dad had a Razer mouse that might be nice, but wasn't nearly as comfortable to use.

That comfort will pay off in the long run, especially at that price!

Also heard an interesting rumour, development of fallout 5 was started at the same time as 4.

Erik Setzer
04-08-2016, 08:08 AM
The only thing that disappoints me with the robots is that they don't properly work stores, even though they can be assigned to them. I assume since they're auto-assigned themselves to work crops*, they at least function for creating food, even if they're not animated properly for it. But I'm just really depressed Bob the Bartender can't actually serve drinks. Still, if you're okay with using robots for manual labor, you can build them and assign them to crops, salvage, stuff that you don't have to interact with the person working it, and that frees up basic settlers to go work the shops.

I decided to give Survival Mode a try, but right now it's just not for me. Constant nagging to eat, drink, or sleep. No save unless you sleep, so you're constantly looking for a bed for your character to rest to save. (Oh, and you can't rest more than 5 hours in a bed that isn't "clean," so basically long rests have to be in settlements.) The first time I died, it was a freak accident fighting the Deathclaw in Concord, where a Raider was still alive, shot up a nearby car, it blew up and killed me (even with power armor). Ended up having to restart from Red Rocket. Then I died to the two bloodbugs, because one got attached to me, which nearly killed me right off, and one more hit did it. Then I survived them, but the Raiders would take me out in just two shots. Meanwhile, trying to hit anything was a mess, and it felt like I wasn't doing nearly as much damage as they were doing to me. Add in the lowered carry limit, and even power armor doesn't help (which seems like it has to be a bug, not a feature, with power armor), and it just becomes an exercise in extreme frustration. Even having pumped up Strength and Endurance with a Toughness perk already (and the first perk of fewer rads from food/water) weren't helping.

I think it'll be a lot more fun once it's released officially, and modders can get in there and tweak it. I like the concept, but right now it feels like playing Dark Souls wouldn't be 1/10 as frustrating. (I should probably try that, some time. Apparently Dark Souls was a free game on XBox at some point, so I have it, but never got around to playing it.)

* Let me set a slightly amusing picture with robots working crops: I built a robot with an Assaultron chassis, but using all the spiked and brutal looking armor, with the skull face (made with actually skull, I'm sure). Armed it with two Shishkebabs. It looks like a terrifying nightmare 'bot with always flaming swords. And yet it's working my crops.

Oh, also, spoilery for anyone who hasn't finished the main quest, so I'll put it in white.

My first character took Shaun the child Synth home with her (she's fighting for Synths to be treated right, after all, and it's designed to resemble the son she lost). When you talk to him at your settlement, he'll sometimes ask you to find specific pieces of junk. Turn them in to him, wait a while, and he'll ask you for more while presenting what he built with the old stuff. He turned a camera into some gun mods, and then asked for an alarm clock (and my mind of course turned to the kid who brought a clock to school)... which he somehow turned into a "Wazer Wifle" (not kidding, that's the name) that never runs out of ammo. Um... how the hell did he turn an alarm clock into a sophisticated laser rifle?!?

My latest character, being hardcore BoS and not a fan of synths, heartlessly turned down Synth Shaun's pleas while evacuating the set-to-explode Institute. I felt a little bad, but, well, that's the character I set for him. Still didn't feel as bad as what happened with Danse. Ouch.

ADA - a assaultron top half, with laser head and gatling lasers that follows me on a mr handy bottom
Jezzabel - a robobrain body on a mr handy bottom with basic arms
curie - upgraded her basic form to the hydralic versions for extra carrying and a damage resistance field

I'm going to see if I can give codsworth a sentrybot body and more dakka.

That mod caused a minor argument, while I agree with you, I was told "it doesn't matter" it doesn't matter? what kind of monster am I seeing?

Finished the mechanist questline. Forgot to do the silvershroud one first. Then of course got distracted improving settlements. Again.
But Oberland station now has a nice bar. And I went to tweak the hangman's ally supply route and got a bloody synth infiltrator attack, so now I need to move a new body there to man my artillery.

Now that I can build robots I've got a senty bot with assaultron head and all the extra storage running supplies from greygarden - because "immersion" and I'm going to fully expand it into a full 20 body settlement of all robots :D

Nice! I've been considering that... looks like fun.

I'm still a bit annoyed I can't have robots properly work shops. I had such high hopes for Bob the Bartender! Humble Bundle's latest bundle is a Telltale Games bundle:

If you like adventure games, it's a good grab. Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Sam & Max, Wolf Among Us, Tales From the Borderlands, some other stuff.

The other current bundle isn't bad either, got a kind of mixed bag of games, but there's some good ones in there, some stuff that looks fun.

put a few hours in to Dark Souls last night, absolutely beautiful. 1 and 2 didn't look great even when they launched, but 3 is amazing. also rock hard. not even a few areas of introductory enemies, it goes almost straight in to a boss fight (did it first time without being hit) then the first main area is full of elite enemies, a dragon, and gribbly monsters.

Had a couple of hours on Shogun 2 last night as a break from wandering the wasteland. The rival factions seem a lot more aggressive than I remember. Several clans have been wiped out already. Two out of my four immediate neighbours declared war on me straight away. One was wiped by the other though as well. I captured a castle town on the first turn with the starting troops. And then successfully defended it several times, killing the enemy daimyo twice.
Just building the economy a bit, then going to push onto the next town with some quality troops.

I still haven't gotten around to playing all of my 360 games.

Funny thing about my XBox One... most of the games I have for it I got free. Either through Games For Gold or EA Vault (FIFA 16 just became available, downloaded that last night). Granted, those games are also ones I'm "behind the times" on, but eh... I'm okay unless it's multiplayer-based. Or relies on it (looking at you, Mass Effect 3!).

On that note... I didn't have an XBox One until last August, so didn't get Sunset Overdrive when it was new. Heard some good stuff, added it to my Amazon wishlist, kind of forgot about it. Then it came up on Games For Gold, and I've been enjoying the heck out of it this week. It's fun to run, jump, and "grind" all around a city, and the game does more fourth-wall-breaking than even Deadpool. Like when the main character says to a guy, "I've got plenty of guns, look," and points to the weapon wheel popping up on screen. Or references to the music playing, the dialogue, other stuff. The dialogue's pretty funny, too. Maybe it's "cheesy" but I liked the "automated" voice in a facility talking about how pointless and repetitive it is to repeat the same procedure three times to complete the quest, and when you finally finish, it says something like, "Okay, my job here is done. Peace out, *****es." I regret not playing it sooner. But especially as it hides some stuff behind multiplayer, and given the game's age, there's not really anyone playing multiplayer, so I can't unlock some of the stuff in-game. Meh. But I do get a complete game in single-player mode for plenty of hours' fun. Take that, Battlefront!

Kirsten

control scheme for the new Star Fox Zero is a nightmare. I knew it included a mix of sticks and motion controls, and takes a few hours to get used to, but wow. Arwing is ok, getting the hang of that, but the other vehicles are terrible, a game like Star Fox really needs slick, responsive controls and the gyrowing and chicken walker just don't have them.

I assume we have plenty of other total war players in here.
Am I doing something particularly wrong or are the units in Shogun2 just weak in terms of morale than previous games?
Men at arms, roman legionaries, British redcoats could all be thrown into pretty much anything and would stand in my experience.
Sword samurai? Break and run with only a third casualties. Run from spearmen. One straggler gets caught in the open? Entire unit "attacked in flank" panic.

Am I going to be better served by throwing archers at everything with a minimal screen of supporting troops?

never got into Shogun... not because of the setting, but because the complete lack of unit variety made the tactical battles so incredibly boring for me... I mean, there was what (might be completely wrong btw, it's been a while...)? Swords, Elite Swords, Bigger Elite Swords. Spears, Elite Spears. Archers, Elite Archers. Cavalry, Elite Cavalry. And that was about it... oh and one "Super Elite" variant per faction that just had a boring old stat increase? yaaaawwwwwwn... I'll take Medieval2 (still my favourite overall) or Rome2 any day of the week, cool scenario for Shogun or not.

Psychosplodge

So I've figured you need to autoresolve. And you need to own a good chunk of the trade points. The only way to achieve anything.
I ended up invading the main island with four armies, quickly captured a dozen provinces then negotiated a peace treaty which should give me ten turns to rebuild the armies and refill my coffers(upgrading the roads to keep reinforcements coming isn't cheap) The only problem is I think if I take any more land the shogun will decide I'm a threat and then my two allies will attack my peaceful rear where I only have one army precisely to hold my immediate neighbour, but it won't do that if they concentrate their forces.
I do miss the tactical game though, but what can you do when it's so broken?

Opted to finally give Sims 3 a proper try, since I got it in some package of games at some point anyway. The first tries were amusing, latest might be the funniest story yet.

Not sure what led to it, but my sim (Mark) decided he wanted to join Law Enforcement as a career. Okay, I can dig that, even though his lifelong aspiration is money and fame. I let him be autonomous at times, especially around people. Eventually he started chatting a lot with a particular sim (Ayesha) and hitting it off. Ah, cool, I'll roll with it and work the romance and all that to see if he's found himself a life partner. Turned out they were perfect for each other and fell madly in love.

Only thing is, her "career" was Criminal. My guy, shooting up through the ranks of Law Enforcement, found himself marrying a criminal, and, given that she "worked" in a location he'd raided multiple times, they probably met while he was bringing down the law. Just a little bit awkward, that.

Wouldn't do for the soon-to-be-International-Superspy to be with a Criminal, so after they married and moved in together, she quit the life of crime and joined a new profession: Politics. I didn't realize how perfect that was until after she was well on her way.

Now, Ayesha is Mayor of the town she started as a criminal in, Mark is a super spy celebrity, the two have a lot of money and investments all over town, and even a son who's growing up to be brilliant and creative (thank you, butler, for helping take care of him!). Granted, Ayesha still wants a daughter, but that hasn't happened yet.

But yeah, criminal to politician seems just so perfect.

And now I've been sucked into this game I thought I'd hate. Blast it.

So sometime over the summer I'm building the SO a new PC cause her last one is at least five years old now and the GPU was my old one that I upgraded at that time(had to put new capacitors on it to stop it crashing under heavy load as well).

Once it's done the plan is to get her a steam copy of Skyrim as it's cheap and she played it a lot on the PS so she'll appreciate the difference.

So last night I spent four hours watching how to mod youtube videos. I'm going to try and make some stuff she'll like when she finds them.
First thing I want to build is a Quik stop staffed by Randle and Dante with voice clips and Jay and Silent Bob outside. Jay constantly dancing around being loud. Silent Bob buying stolen stuff. A simple idea, but probably still ambitious for a first mod. Obviously won't be going on nexus cause it'll be full of film sound clips.

Might hide a couple of manga collections in the wild for a random collectable shelf to fill, in a custom cottage.

It'll be crazy XD

I know, but a lot of those games suffered the same issue of the character blending into the background. I remember one of the earliest in the Oddworld series being unplayable because of it. I recall one of the earlier Mario games putting a solid white outline around the character to visually distinguish them, maybe something like that would work better?

I didn't have too much trouble with Rome 2 on release actually, the onl thing was the ridiculous AI turn lengths which I put to good use by reading a book lol. I saw rumours of a VC themed DLC pack with Neferata as a legendary lord so I hope they do that. ****ing pissed they didn't include a single female lord in the initial release because they could EASILY have had Neferata instead of Kemmler for VC but whatever.

It might have depended on difficulty. I think I played on Normal generally, but I did ridiculously well on the hardest setting on one of the historical scenarios, though can't manage the eagles one by either following the youtube guide or on the easiest setting. *shrugs*

3.5 years ago I bought a ps3 for the sole purpose of Skyrim. A couple weeks ago I built my first ever PC.

It's terrible. Reasons:

Skyrim already has too much content without mods.
I used to get work done on airplanes but now I will play small games on my laptop instead, it's going to be terrible for productivity.
I don't have time to grab snacks during load screens.
Making new characters is my favorite part of RPGs. Now if something breaks I know how to fix it, so I don't get to wipe my data and make all new characters like I did on my PS3 last year.*
All these short indie games that are now available are distracting me from finishing my big games.
If the games don't freeze, how do I know when to stop???
With a desktop computer hooked up to the TV, I now have no use for my apple TV, roku, and mac mini. **
Now I have to find my stupid glasses every time I play so I can see the beautiful Ultra graphics.
Since I can play online without subscribing, now all my long-distance friends want to, like, talk to me and stuff. Ugh.
I literally haven't gone outside in two days. Send help. Or pizza.

Yeah, PC gaming sucks

I really hate how most games don't even get an HD remake since the original release works fine at high resolutions and still runs on newer systems.

And the way that a lot of old multiplayer games still work? Absolutely terrible! How am I supposed to know when I have to buy the next release?

FFS Farharbour came out last week and still not had a chance to play it.
Bethasda have apparently become arsey about modded games and you now need a mod to continue getting steam achievements post modding the game.
And then TotalWarhammer comes out tomorrow.
So much to do. So little time.

The "no-achievements-if-you-modded" is kind of a sad move. If you're concerned people might be able to mod-cheat their way into achievements, just don't include achievements like that. But don't punish people for modding, especially when you're trying to act like you're mod-friendly. (Probably isn't making them any happier that people immediately started modding survival mode... some to make it more "real," some to make it less annoying, like with the save system.)

Speaking of mods, though, I think I screwed up by trying to use the in-game system as well as Nexus. I had dozens of mods through Nexus, so I didn't want to give those up, but some of the ones in-game looked nice and I figured they'd install better. Somewhere, though, there's a ridiculous conflict. I've worked out a bunch of issues already, but I've ditched over 30 mods and still have ridiculous crashes. As it is, I'm going to have to pretty much remove everything but the crafting mods I used to build my settlements and hope it makes the game stable again. Spending hours playing around with it isn't fun, but I want to check out Far Harbor, and I don't want to lose all of my progress in building up settlements or have to start a fresh game from scratch.

And with TW:WH coming out, I might not get a chance to get back to it.

I'm not sure how I kept getting distracted from it, but I did (and part of the problem is I originally bought it for X-Box, where I couldn't mod or anything). SO what did a six hour session look like?

http://i.imgur.com/aGDaL65.png?1

Played as chaos. Died horribly about forty turns in.
Figured out what I'd done wrong. (Don't point marauders at dwarves. completely pointless exercise.)
Started again.
Archeon currently level 11/12 ish. Absolute beast in combat.(filled out his armour slot so he can take a severe pounding) Got him his horse. Finished the slayer of kings quest. The final battle was interesting. Took two attempts.
Main horde can recruit chosen. Just waiting for the population growth so I can start recruiting chaos knights.
Just started my second army which has to make serious gold to justify its existence. Took all my none warrior units out of Archeon's horde and handed them over for speed, plus some chosen as initial new hordes can only recruit the basic units.
Hordes cause each other attrition. Makes taking larger armies in garrisons more difficult. Camping near a city but outside it's ZOC appears to encourage some of them to come move you.
Not sure how to increase my base income as chaos. Also no tutorial as chaos but its enough a total war that you fumble around and get it.

Campaign map looks beautiful. i3570k/16gb/SLI gtx970 runs at 40-120 fps with everything except anti aliasing on max. (AA is 2x).
Battles run around 30-60fps unless you get a single mass of about 3000 infantry in one brawl. Then it's dropped as low 12. But it was a massive fight.
Looks gorgeous though.

I played as VC, made the mistake of expanding too slowly, ended up getting ****ed up by a WoC invasion about 60 turns in, two full stacks of gribblies that had chomped through Kisleb and down into my provinces from the north, not sure why they targeted me so much, maybe because I was ranked #1? Anyway my five stacks of VC got obliterfried embarrassingly easily and that was that.

Started a new game as Empire, took a little while to get used to the squishier troops at first. Started by consolidating Reikland and opening trade with as many people as possible. Built up to two full stacks le by Karl Franz and the Imperial Treasure whose name I forget (just some random lord) and when I took teh final Reikland province I had those stacks just near the border with Marienburg so I declared war, seized the city with minimal losses adn then crossed the bay thing and took their other settlement in the Wasteland. Stopped for a few turns to replenish my forced and spend money on buildings and whatnot, then I declared war on Middenland because they had provinces bordering the Wasteland within easy march of my army and also they didn't like my appointment as Empress so screw them. Took their two provinces in Middenland but Hochland beat me to Middenheim which was annoying.

At this point Stirland and Talebecland were begging me for treaties so I signed up to all of those which brought me so much popularity with them I was able to get them to confederate, starting with Stirland. Then Averland and Norland who were allied declared war on Talebecland, which meant I went to war with them. I laid siege to Averheim and forced them to become my vassal and then forced Nordland to pay a all the golds to me for a peace treaty. Then I focused on building up my infrastructure and replenishing my forces. After about 8 turns of that I confederated Talebecland and declared war on Wissenland. I got really lucky with that, they had their original eponymous province unguarded and their main army in an extra province they took from a small VC state, so I took their main province very easily then vassaled them well up.

While all this was happening Kislev, Ostland and Ostermark were getting smashed up by Norsca and WoC, in fact I think the Norsca nations (Varg and Skiggles or something I forget) are way too overpowered because not only were they harassing me in the Wasteland and central Middenland but they were also rampaging through Kislev, razing 6/8 of their settlements which meant there was no kind of buffer between me and WoC except a severely weakened Kislev. Luckily WoC AI seemed a bit less aggressive this time because they didn't actually do much.

Anyway, then Bretonnia declared war on me so I invaded with two full stacks and seized their province (they hadn't unified the other smalelr Bretonnian states so it easy) which gave me some much needed income. Then a Skiggle army razed Weisburg in Middenland, and fecking Nordland colonised it before I could, but then a Varg army razed it again 20 turns later so I was able to get it back, then I confederated Ostermark to stop VC taking all their settlements and a bit later I confederated Hochland which finally got me Middenheim. Then I had to stop expanding because I needed to counter Chaos influence and then I went to bed.

Really, really fun and the confederation mechanic REALLY makes it feel like yo uare playing the Empire its great.

- - - Updated - - -

But I think I really love how Vampire Counts are handled the most. Intead of gold your cities and stuff generate dark magic you use to raise or recruit new troops, and the fact you can train them OR raise some basic units instantly to bosot your force immediately is really thematic and fun.

This is shaping up to be the first TW game where I actually want to play each faction, except maybe WoC because screw Archaeon.

Not a fan? lols he's very OP, but I haven't encountered any major heros yet for a proper comparison. In my first failed attempt He was stood in the gate of a dwarven fortress taking on an entire army by the end of the battle, and still took nearly ten mins to die - at about level 6.

I'm assuming that works something like the chaos favour mechanic, you spend and accumulate the favour of the gods rather than gold.
The random rewards with a timed effect often give you a choice to pick something from one god or the other with varying effects.
Chaos spawn seem to be a pain to fight against cause they're unbreakable and can easily chew through a couple of low quality units.

Now I feel bad I only got an hour in. But in my defense, I was also starting up Far Harbor after stripping out over half of my mods (down to like 40, and holy smokes, the game looked beautiful to me when it first came out, but doesn't compare to how awesome I had it looking with textures and greenery). And being distracted mightily by a friend, because trying to listen to someone on Skype when their mic sounds awful is not easy when you're also trying to listen to instructions in-game.

Still, it was a pretty fun hour. Went with Orcs, because Orcs are da' best, Grimgor especially, and kicked a few tails, grabbed another area already, feeling reasonable about things.

I do have to still chuckle that in the behind-the-scenes video there's an early shot of an Undead miniatures army with a Mantic skeleton unit in it. Mantic was quick to point that out on their Facebook page. Not sure GW will be happy about that.

Yup, like until now they have been able to hide behind 'historical accuracy' (which is problematic in itself in games which are all about rewriting history if you want), but now you have a situation where they have deliberately erased powerful women who are in the game just because they were too lazy to create some portraits and get the lady voice actresses to record a few more lines. It's even worse for VC where they have the hero portraits and in game models but couldn't manage to put some ****ing female vampire lords in.

I'm half expecting to get elf DLC where they ****ing include Malekith and Lokhir Felheart vs Finubar and Tyrion, instead of Morathi and Alarielle.

Sad as that would be in your regard, my money for High Elf Legends is the twins. They are simply the most well-known and fleshed out - did Finubar ever even appear in the TT or do anything warlike in the lore? I know Alarielle did, but "only"/mainly in the last edition Army Book iirc? While T&T have been around forliterallyever.

I may have made a mistake playing chaos.
I appear to have overstretched myself building a second army, and not razing everytown behind me. The greed of the sacking got me.
Also I think I've seen what I assume is Karl Fritz? on the campaign map. I'm going to get my arse handed me in the near future.

Fought two big city attacks last night.
Walls of Praag. Pain in the arse. Archers range seems ridiculous.
Going over the walls with ladders just got me mobbed by superior numbers.
Battering ram just got my forces decimated by archers.
using a limited section of wall and ladders got me the walls, but the archers had done that much damage it was impossible to push off into the city.
Finally took the city by using archeon to fireball the gates till they popped while everyone else stood in the woods. Then charged the entire army through that gap. Made the mistake of prematurely charging Archeon in while everyone else was still in the woods. He died just before the end of the battle. One on one superiority of chaos warriors/chosen meant I managed to get into the city. But being outnumbered 2-1 with about a third bowmen/handgunners the casualties were horrific.
I won by objective capture but army was reduced to about two hundred.

Mistakenly attacked Kislev with my weaker force. Had a go with siege towers.
First tower only made it half way to the walls. Second tower made it. Threw everyone through it onto the walls. More effective than ladders.
But these were three units of chosen and the rest marauders. While they pushed the enemy off the wall section they were massacred by artillary fire and handgunners and the chosen were pushed off by four or five units of greatswords.
The battle ended up being that slaaneshi prince fighting all the remaining enemy infantry on top of the wall.

Lessons learned? Don't point marauders at any static defences not just dwarves.

eldargal
05-26-2016, 07:21 AM
To be fair, Praag should be hard to take.:p Premature charging seems like something Archaeon would do.

Speaking of Archaon, I killed him well ded with Karl Franz in personal combat last night. Turns out a well trained and armoured Empire army is a lot tougher than a mid game level VC army, who'd have thought. Destroyed the WoC faction, which has left the Norsca as the main irritation. I had to take Karl Franz and Balthazar Gelts armies south through Blackfire Pass to stop the Dwarfs being stomped by Orcs which was a pain, Orc armies are really frustratingly fast, can't catch them which makes fighting them challenging. But it took pressure of the stunties and they seem to be recovering.

I managed to make peace with one of the Norsca factions, Varg, but the bloody Skuggins or whatever they are called are causing all sorts of trouble. Somehow they managed to become the second ranked strongest nation after me and had like 6 full stacks in the field, even manaked to sneak one down the West coast and besiege Marianburg which I was able to save thankfully. I'd just spent 13500 gold building the marianburg port so I would have been pissed to lose it. I've counter attacked with two full stacks of experienced, hardened men (hurhur) and started burning their settlements but attrition is such that I can't reach most of their settlements before my armies are in no shape to fight which sucks. I kind of think without WoC to motivate them they shouldn't be so aggressive or able to field so many large armies at once.

VC managed to expand into the ruins of the Kislev provinces while I was occupied which is annoying, but I'm still much stronger than them so hopefully I will be able to deal with them once the Stunted Ones are secure and I won't have to worry about greenskins flooding my southern provinces (hur).

I also discovered that some cities have unique buildings so I now have:
The Port of Marianburg
The Port of Erengrad
The Altdorf College of Sparkly Nerds
The Knights Panther HQ in Carroburg
The Gunner School at Nuln
The Big Temple Thing of Ulric at Middenheim
Which all came with achievements which was nice.

There is a mod in steam workshop which removed race restrictions on settlements which I don't actually like the idea of, but I want some permanent ****ing solution to the bloody Skeggling norscans.

I'm thinking I'll play Dwarfs next.

Tyrendian
05-26-2016, 07:28 AM
Dorfs are fun, your front line just does not shift, period - and your Quarrellers and Thunderers will still kick any stray Greenskin's butt if they come too close... also, Quarrellers are ridiculously powerful at range (two units will decimate a unit of Big 'uns before they get into Choppa range...)

I'm actually impressed with how well balanced all the things are. Like in past TW games I usually ended up skipping ranged units often because they weren't effective enough, they might kill like 6 guys then flee behind me lines and do nothing much for the rest of the match but shooting units have actually been reallly good without being overpowered.

also impressed with allied AI, like when I was fighting off WoC and Norsca in the north my allies and vassals were sending armies both to help up there but also to the north west to harry the Norsca in their own regions to stop them continuing to flank me.

Psychosplodge
05-26-2016, 08:06 AM

Finished my Empire playthrough last night, controlled everything north of the Grey Mountains and west of the Black mountains right up to the border of Norsca and the Chaos wastes, plus a bit of the border kingdoms and western Bretonnia. Much fun.
Started a dorf playthrough, enjoying them a lot as well. so tough. Things were looking really bad at one point when Grimgor attacked my main army with afull stack of 20 units vs my 15 or so, which was 6 warriors, 6 quarrelers, 2 catapult things and Thorgrim Whatsisname, the power bar thing was about 75% red so I thought I was going to lose but I actually stomped them good and proper and killed Grimgor. Dwarfs is tough. They hit the middle of my line hard but I was able to flank them with my remaining units and the center held because dwarfs and I just ignored the orc arrer boys and routed the regular boys and used quarrelers to shoot the shooters.I really like the Book of Grudges mechanic as well, I lost a small garrison army a couple of times and when I retook the settlement I got an extra 1000 gold which was nice.

When you're starting a new game, it labels Empire, Orcs, and VC as "Normal," Chaos as "Hard," and Dwarfs as "Easy." I'm not sure why so many people are surprised Dwarfs are pulling off victories. Though they might still end up tweaking them a bit if it keeps going.

Expanded MUCH more quickly, claimed the Moot and Averland but missed out on Wissenland because the Empire confederated them the turn after I declared war. A bit miffed because their army was up attacking Ostermark so I could have taken Nuln easily. Conquest is slowed because I haven't been able to spread corruption effectively, that is starting to change a little now that I'm able to build higher tiered corruption spreading things and the last thing I did last night was build the thing which lets me recruit Banshees who spread corruption quite effectively so shall be sending them into Empire provinces forthwith.

Got the short campaign victory on TW:WH.
Lost my second army again. I'm sticking to a single stack now as just can't be arsed to have to worry about looting enough to offset 7k losses a turn. Now I can just raze everything.
Just got the Dwarf to worry about now.
Figured out a reasonable way to take dwarf holds. 5x hell cannons. Deployed at back of deployment area at far end to minimise return fire. Target the two towers that will be range of the army first.
Then demolish two sections of wall and the gates. And then you'll have about half a dozen shots to hit any ranged units on the walls near your breach.
Then push through all three holes at once with chosen. Once you've cleared the gaps push cavalry through the back streets to use where necessary.
Usually <200 casualties. Often <100.

So yesterday I started farharbour.
I'm only in the early 80s level wise. Some of the creatures hit hard. The only thing keeping me alive is my explosive pistol, but I'm going through 10mm ammo so fast I'm back into double figures. On the other hand the price of the cooked animals is offsetting the cost of ammo.

But I finally won on one of those crane things

Had my latest VC campaign go terribly wrong, again lol. I know what the problem is, just not sure how to remedy it. Lots of skellingtons and zombies backed by some GG, vargheists/crypt horrors and black knights sees off most things but WoC need to be countered pretty exclusively with those elite armoured and armour piercing units. The trouble is with 4-5 stacks needing to be maintained to keep my borders and income sources secure I can't afford to maintain an army like that, let alone two stacks to deal with the three full stacks of WoC that cam stomping down with Archaeon. One thing I had done differently this playthrough was expand early into the Empire, taking pretty much the entire south by turn 50, and then the Northern states and Kislev fell to the Norsca which meant there was nothing between Archaeon and me to weaken his forces. So I'm thinking maybe a radical rethink is in order and instead of expanding into the Empire, expand south into the Border Kingdoms and then West to Bretonnia, Tilea and Estalia. then wait for the Woc to smash the Empire, ot be smashed, and pick up the pieces.

Psychosplodge

My game currently has Norsca, border princes, tilea, dwarfs, VC, and one of the orc factions left. Tilea is rebuilding Bretonnian ruins and expanding that way. So it might work. Vampire counts were ignored by me until they attacked me as I could get to Altdorf by going down the north bank of the river.
Lightning strike is how I've been dealing with groups of stacks. Very useful general skill.

I fought 1650 WoC with 6300 elite VC skellingtons and whatnot and it was like dropping things into a blender. Graveguard and my elite combat generals id a lot of killyness but only so much 600GG plus three generals can do.

AI cheats maybe? There are a few of those, like how annoyingly fast AI armies are. They can march AND attack, which is a huge pain in the arse because its impossible to catch them but if you don't chase them around on march yourself then they can just sack/raze a heap of cities unopposed. You have to hope they **** up and siege a city so you can catch up to them.

I've found chariots annoying but not devastating yup.

Psychosplodge

Yes, I was chasing a dwarf army as WoC and there was no way I was catching it. There's something wrong there.

Yep, dwarf AI seems to be able to move as fast as anyone else as well. I've seen some people say the march+fight is a bug, others its an AI cheat so hopefully it is the latter and it will get patched because its really, really frustrating sometimes.

Been replaying Fallout 4 with lots of mods, mostly cosmetic and bugfixes, but my favourite has to be this one:

https://66.media.tumblr.com/024a3c88e82f4e4cf6ee5c7e0242a535/tumblr_o81siwI54F1r3nwsxo1_1280.jpg

I know it's very anti-lore, but it's so much more interesting than a blasted wasteland. Also another favourite one is the named settler mods - randomly gives the generic settlers a name from Codsworth's list of names. Combined with more settlers (more variety in their appearance, so 100 different faces), makes the settlements feel a lot more like actual towns.

Also Automaton is great fun, making tons of robots, and Far Harbour has been really good so far.

Ooh, I like the named settler mod idea, much easier to keep track of people as well, like if you've sent Bob to work as a weapon seller and then you see Bob wandering around not selling weapons like she is supposed to you know something is up, but if its just Settler or whatever then who knows.

I need to tart playing FO4 again.

It's a very good mod, and the more settler one also makes them all different heights if you want which is nice. And can make only ladies arrive at your settlements which was obviously designed by dudebros but great if you want lesbian seperatist communes:p

Also have a mod that makes the bobbleheads in the game into Vaul-girl.

I have the named Settlers mod, it's really nice. I turned off all my visuals mods in my "purge" to get the game not to die on me so much, but I'll be adding them back in now that it's running pretty solid. (Finally got to a crash, but it was hours into playing.) I like the greenery mods, because while they might not be "lore-friendly," they make things look better *and* make more sense to me, given that the plants would grow back after over 200 years (even more so, since no one's around to trim them or anything). Far Harbor's been pretty fun so far, though I'm sure I've got a lot more to do.

Started a co-op campaign with a friend in TW:WH yesterday. At this point, it's pretty much been enough to turn me off on playing the game until there's a patch, or at least mods, or something. He picked VC, I picked Orcs (favorite race and all). He's been building armies, expanding, had a successful siege, all kinds of goodness.

Me? Took a while to build up armies. Won some early battles, but lots of casualties. Had to rebuild armies. That was expensive. Getting money from cities made them more likely to revolt, so I had to cut some of my money supply. Have to hit higher levels of growth just to be able to expand a city enough to get a building so I can start researching, and that took like 50 turns or so of waiting. Meanwhile, another Orc tribe shows up with its own massive armies and starts giving me trouble. But that's not the kicker. No, the kicker is the Dwarfs. FREAKING DWARFS. Can barely put a dent in their armies and they straight up maul my armies. I didn't have a hero army left in one area, so it was just the garrison. A Dwarf hero comes in with a unit of Quarellers and a unit of Stone Throwers. I figure the garrison's pretty good size, should be able to handle it. Nope. Wiped out to a man, doesn't hurt the Dwarfs. Add in Thorgrim Grudgebearer walking around with an ever-expanding army. Every time I build up an army, it gets mauled by Dwarfs or three-on-one battles with other Orc armies (which can apparently build up ten times faster than I can). Got a character up a few levels, had some followers, couple magic items... Dwarfs come and kill him. Grimgor got knocked out, brought him back, started trying to build what I could afford as two different Dwarf realms wrecked two of my cities constantly (destroying my money supply), and what do you know, the capital rebels. Oh, but the rebels have access to advanced units I couldn't build yet, and they're all experienced. And the rebel army just keeps growing. Ends up wrecking Grimgor's army sickeningly easily. Then another city rebels, same issue. At this point I've got two cities getting ransacked by minor Dwarf armies, and two cities with ever-growing rebel armies of veteran elites Orcs and Goblins smashing any army I try to build. And I've gone bankrupt.

So, at this point, I get to watch my turn come up, see that I can't do anything except try to repair what's been destroyed (again), and click end-of-turn within 20 seconds of the turn starting, then wait again as the Vampire Counts march all over the place destroying things, and using overwhelming armies to crush Dwarf holds. Sure, he's theoretically helping me by taking on the Dwarfs (though would still need several turns to get an army to where I am to break the ring of armies wrecking my land), but in the process, he's destroying some of the locations I'd be able to claim, since I'm limited to Orc and Dwarf locations. Doubt it'll matter, because I'm pretty sure I'll be out of the game before long.

It feels like as Orcs, surrounded by Dwarfs, I have to sit in place and not try to take any land, until I've built up a massive army of basic units while waiting seemingly forever to be able to start building more advanced units, and then hope I can expand fast enough to get in a bunch of money quickly to afford building up another army, because the upkeep is frakking insane. It's not an experience that lends itself well to playing with someone else, since you have to sit through their turns, then take a few seconds to click through yours, and repeat over and over, bored because you forgot to put the game in windowed mode so you can play another game or surf the web.

I'm probably just incredibly bad at the game and should either "git gud" or give up on a $60 game, but I swear it feels like Dwarfs are so OP that starting near them and not trying (uncharacteristically) to be peaceful with them is a good way to have an awful game experience.

Got the stuck in the lift bug in far harbour, once so far. And the bridge between Dalton farm and far harbour gives me a noticable stutter as I walk across it. But that's only problems I've had *touchs wood*

Is that population mod the one that lets you set the percentage of children to the settlement as well? Or just one that turns off male settlers?
Cause I saw someone(possibly final render) using one that gives you a menu and sliders that lets you tweak population make up.

Also discovering you can link the supply chain back to the commonwealth was useful.
Mostly been doing far harbour residents quests and building at dalton farm. Got a nice little cliff top shed for me. Three large buildings built out of the new barn pieces. A market and a bar.

Definitely can vouch for both of those. They seriously help to make settlements more interesting. Just giving people names and more variety of outfits and all helps, because instead of "Settler" working some of the crops and greeting me, it's Callie in her old beat-up tuxedo greeting me (and ignoring the crops).

One issue I'm having at the moment with Far Harbor and settlements is I don't like the idea of "teleporting" to the mainland and then back just to see to settlements, so I had to skip on a settlement under attack, and I keep getting notifications that one of my settlements apparently got pretty popular and doesn't have enough beds (if it's the one I'm thinking of, that'll require a pretty extensive tear down and rebuild of the place).

Wish I could clear the roof at the lumber yard in far harbour so I could make it nicer with those new barn roofs.
Got the lower ground floor sealed and filled with beds. upper ground floor has farming in it under spotlights. first floor guard post at the broken corner, then it's going to have either a bar and seating or more farming, then the 2nd will have more beds, and the roof will have either farming or the bar. Any extra bodies are going in a shed outside searching for junk.

Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4 are all first person shooter types, the time pausing element is optional. 1 & 2 are turn based but usually pretty quick (and in 2 you can avoid all but one fight thru talking). Tactics can be turn based or real time with regenerating action points.

It's also worth noting that MG turrets have levels from 1-5 (written on the side, also darker colours for higher levels), and they scale as you level so as you get higher levels the chance to spawn a higher level turret increases. Worth checking what levels the turrets are in case they are all ones which are kinda useless.

Maybe also shotgun turrets just inside the perimeter?

Also are you finding settler spawn rates for the island settlements really low? I've gotten one new settler at one town in like three hours. Had four pop on the mainland tho.

Erm, I haven't been paying attention to the game time wise, but I've been playing farharbour since monday? Dalton farm has 10 settlers and a beacon. And seems to get a new one maybe every couple of game days or so that I'm elsewhere on the island. Neither of my other two have added anything beyond the initial 2/3 they started with. But I don't have beacons at them. I'm planning on setting them up properly one at a time.
Beyond running back to problem solve and take clothes out of my clothes storage box I haven't paid attention to my commonwealth settlements.

Thanks for the tip re-turrets, I'd not realised that the PC's were leveled as well.

Ah that's fine, just that I've had beacons on three of the four with only one getting a new settler while the mainland kept getting them so thought it might be an intentional thing. I've got a few "proper" settlements, I've set up the drive in as basically a huge person farm so it just keeps recruiting and has a big house with 20 beds stuffed in there so I can send people from there off to new settlements to be supply runners asap. Also basically everyone gets the cement walls built around them because they're cool lol.

No problem, I only noticed a couple of days ago reading something in the wiki :p
