View Full Version : The new citadel paints, first impressions.

Evening.

Had a quick play with some of the new paints today at my local GW, and I'm wondering what others make of them.

First up, I'm mightily impressed with the Oxide, Rust and Corrision ones. Used a store Space Marine, painted Leadbelcher. Really, really easy to use! Corrision is applied as per a wash. For those unaware, it contains gritty bits, which clump together when drying. This leaves an interest pattern on your model, ideal for Ryza Rust to be drybrushed on top, as a spot drybrush.

Straight off the bat, your model is now looking nice and manky.

Top it off with the Oxide, which adds a pleasing verdigris to the model. I only applied it a shoulder pad, concentrating on the ridges, but with enough to leave a bit of a stain on the pad itself, the excess wiped off with a finger (what can I say, it was to hand! Buh-boom!).

Ease of use and quality of affect leaves me tempted to start a Purge army using the Chaos book! They had run out of these three by the time I decided to buy, so awaiting a mail order delivery. Will then apply this to one of the Honoured Imperium statues. It may not look quite so good on a larger model, but willing to find out!

Next up was Nurgles Rot. Consistency of the varnish, with a proper manky green colour. Used it sparingly to create pus weeping eye sockets on the model. Looked good!

Bought Blood for the Blood God for a Bloodletter painting experiment, which I'll report back on in due course (trying to get a decent 'flayed body' look and texture).

Sadly the Agrellan Earth left quite a bit to be desired from the experiments I saw. The crackle effect just didn't take hold. Could be because the shop was cold, but yeah. Didn't crackle at all. Very interested to hear the experiences of others on this one. (thinking further, could also be a result of the paint not being shaken up before application. This is pure supposition though, as I didn't play with this one personally).

So, the three I got a real chance to play with are lovely, and really useful!

Anyone else had a play?

(and yes, I'm aware there are other manufacturers of similar paints, but do try not to declare one or the other inferior until you've had experience of both. I've only used the citadel ones)

You don't live in Stevenage do you as what you've said sounds familiar? :p

My Agrellan Earth doesn't appear to be working, could be I'm using it like paint and so not using enough. I've applied more to a bigger base and waiting for the stuff to dry.

Nah. Tunbridge Wells, a mere 5 minutes from the shop!

Could be that the initial batch of Agrellan is duff. Could also be it does just take ages to occur, or anything inbetween!

Very tempted to procure the complete set over time. Got some Nurgle daemons in need of a damned good mankying up as well.

Right, off to finish spraying up those Bloodletters, so I can tinker with the flayed body look!

Well I've got two bases with the stuff on and nothing has happened, plus the stuff I've recently painted on appears to be doing the same.

Think the crackle stuff needs to be laid on thick. Real thick.

So it'll cover a lot less bases than you think.

Hmm. Guys at the shop suspected it might be to do with the cold weather.

I know ambient temprature mucks about with the sprays.

Could also be it just takes yonks to kick in? WD does say to apply a *thick* layer, so could be that as well?

Well I'm heading back to my hobby desk to put another tactical squad together, so I'll get another base and put a blob on it and see if anything happens.

I bought most of them this morning, with the exception of the verdigris one (just couldn't see myself using it), and the rust effects - when I got in the shop I thought it looked too garish for my tastes, plus I've already got the MIG products one. Interesting to hear about the Agrellan Earth - in what sort of thickness did you apply it?

Maybe it takes some time to dry properly and when it does the cracks appear. Me I'd be tempted to just buy some crackle medium and make my own from any colour I chose. I'm guessing this new ones quite thick ?

This may be of some help.

I picked up the Nurgle's Rot and Blood for the Blood God paints yesterday. Tried them out this morning before work and I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. GW has a series of videos on the website and their Youtube channel explaining how to use each. They are about 2 minutes in length. I've used another company's verdigris paint, liked it, so I'm sure the GW version will be just as good. The rust and wash look like they will be the all-stars of the group. I'm looking forward to getting a pot of each. So far, it seems like no one is happy with the cracked earth paint, I'll reserve judgment until I try it out.

Right, that stuff looks really good. Especially on darker models as a nice contrast. I'm going to give it a try.

I've already watched that video several times and my stuff still won't crack. I think I've just got a bad batch.

that sucks. I bought Vallejo's crackle medium and didn't have much luck either. that's the one that you brush on top of the already painted surface and it cracks. craft stores have similar things, but it seems like it would be thicker and more for use on wood or metal, maybe the oil based crackles work better than acrylics?

Watching to time lapse on the video, it seems to really crackle on ridges of paint.

Worth persevering I guess.

Well I don't have an infinite supply of spare bases to test it on.

A quick note on the crackle paint from GW guys, The 2 GW stores near me have put up face book announcements that there is a dodgy batch and the paints not working, https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=550135238396915&set=a.121595784584198.24380.107180066025770&type=1&theater check that link to see. Replacements are being offererd when they get more stock back in.

Bit more news on the duff batch, from GW Bluewater via GW Tunbridge Wells.

If your local store has more than a single batch, compare the Agrellan Earths. Darker coloured ones are working fine. Lighter toned ones are duff.

It'll be a pretty dull picture though, seeing as it is just a base. xD

Add some of that lovely scorched grass ? The GW demo video certainly made this new product tempting to try.

I need to buy some Mr Santa. :)

I have this awesome basing idea for my Tomb Kings, paint the base biege, then paint Agrellan Earth, then use Armageddon Dust in parts that has been drybrushed with lighter colours for definition, then finally add varying tufts of scorched grass. You have cracked, smooth, rough, and grassy texture on one base, should look pretty desert-y.

Sounds like a great plan for a base. It really does improve any miniature when time and effort is put into the basing.
Especially when all the models are in formation as in Warhammer.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with TDA.

Just to let you guys know that there are in fact bad batches of the new cracked earth paint, apparently GW HQ have started contacting Store Managers about it.

Bought all 6 the other day...

And now I cannot wait till payday to get more. The earth I find abit hit and miss, needs very thick coat to crackle well, corrosion is the paint my vehicles have been waiting for, love the effects I'm getting with the oxide, rust and blood, only one not so sure of is the rot, but that's mainly because I have no real use for it atm. Though it does look good.

Favourite finds so far is doing a layer of of earth on bottom half of my chimeras, followed by corrosion them dry brushed with rust for that 'has spent far too long driving through salt marshes' look.

Oxide taking abit of practise but slowly getting the hang of it, plenty of rubbing raised areas with my thumbs after applying :)

and blood god? Well that's just great fun, apply wait to dry and instant awesome gore/blood splatter effect.

GW Uxbridge sold out :(

Mr Mystery
11-17-2013, 02:05 PM
Finished first Bloodletter. Slathered it in BFTBG, and yes, it looks akin to a flayed corpse, though will drybrush up lighter next time.

Also had a closer squizz at the results of the Corrosion. Works well as an all over wash, and as demonstrated in WD, as a spot effect. And when used as a wash, small bits of the grit look like pitting on the surface, so definite thumbs up on that one!

Any chance of pics showing the earth/corrosion/rust result?

Here's my first Bloodletter. Apologies for the crap-o-vision.568656865686

I've only tried one base so far with Agrellan Earth but had good success with it. I laid in on thickly and then used a hair dryer on low to speed up the drying process. Gave a very nice crackle effect. It could be that the batch isn't necessarily bad, but needs heat to activate the crackle effect.

Looks good dude!

Rescued my Manticore and Deathstrike from the shop today (been there since I worked there, three and a bit years ago!).

Looking forward to 'junking' them with the new paints!

Just so you know, I kinda suck at painting most of the time

And like Jake the Dog says, 'sucking at something is the first step to being kinda good at something'

Absolutely, I think if you hadn't used as much you would have achieved a more realistic look. But for a 1st bash looks good to me Daemon.

Thanks for the encouragement, was thinking of toning it down for my russes. Do have a habit of getting carried away, especially when it comes to drybrushing, first time I used necron compound I nearly turned a whole vehicle silver :-P

My Agrellan Earth doesn't appear to be working, could be I'm using it like paint and so not using enough. I've applied more to a bigger base and waiting for the stuff to dry.

I have seen better results where there is some other texture under it on the base... you get more cracks that way.

I've tried that, just looks like a large pool of mud. I'll need to get a replacement pot.
