Just making my first post. Long time lurker. Been playing 40k for about 6 months now...and LoTR for a decade.

Nice to meet everyone.

I play Space Marines (Salamanders) and High Elves in LoTR. It is vastly different coming from LoTR-style of rules to 40k. Glad I found this site to help me learn more tactica and the like!

Did you find it a help or a hinderance coming from LoTR to 40k?

I think it hindered me a little. The sheer size of an army needed to play a proper game was staggering. I know that playing a few games of kill teams helped kickstart my understanding of the rules. I'd say that is more beneficial than the starter sets. They try and do too much I think.

Sorry I was curious as I have heard LoTR described as 40k/WFB -lite.

It depends how you play the game really. If you're playing War of the Ring (expansion of LoTR), it is VERY WFB like. Beyond that, I think it is more difficult to draw a comparison as a "lite" version of 40k/WFB. The models all act independently and are not based on anyone else around them (like 40k's cohesion rules) and the whole turn strategy are the real main differences. Stats and the use of dice are somewhat similar though and that was easier to grasp. All it takes is diving in to the rulebook and getting smacked around a lot by more experienced players.
