Except that unlike gay or f*ggot, it hasn't had it's use in modern nomenclature replaced with a different meaning, it was merely abandoned. Ergo, it still means prostitute as a secondary meaning, because the primary meaning is as archaic and unused.

I'm sure any of these cosplayers would love to hear that there was no effort involved in making their costumes (and that in that video the only consideration for women is being sexy >_>), because no matter how you define "wench" your comment comes off as incredibly dismissive and condescending in a "stupid girls liking things that aren't sexy or in my personal sphere of interest" kind of way :/

(Also referring to women as "serving girls" is still incredibly insulting as you're saying they should be servants by virtue of being women)

The relative 'sexiness' of the costumes is irrelevant. Nowhere have I mentioned sexiness. Yes the video mentioned sexiness. I'm sorry you think I co-opted Ms Cuoco, several cosplayers and youtube just to tell you all cosplaying should be sexy but regrettably I don't have that pull. A strong, successful woman did that all on her own.

And following that up with a video that's message is hey girls don't all dress as Leia there are other sexy costumes instead (which is a sh*tty message even if a successful woman's saying it!) it makes it seem like you're only interested in certain things (armoured dudes + sexy ladies) and being really patronising to the rest.

Let me tell you about this woman. I saw her walking down the stairs and away from the convention center on Sunday at Anime Expo. For those of you who do not know, she’s cosplaying as Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle. I asked to take her picture and she happily complied. After, she told us that it’s hard to her to find cosplays because she’s in her eighties. This woman is over 80 years old and she’s cosplaying, going to conventions, and being amazing.

You are making assumptions here and that assumption is that every single trooper just buys ready to wear armour. That also ignores the fact that any one of the cosplayers in the preceding pictures could have pre-bought their costumes and made equally as little effort as ready to wear stormtrooper armour. And I would be surprised if they dropped a grand on any of their costumes as well.

I personally reckon that making armour from scratch is harder than a costume where the skills involved are essentially sewing/needlecraft.

There was a blue tentacle-headed creature earlier in the thread. That would have taken some effort for sure. But you writing off storm trooper as 'almost no effort' is as incredibly rude to thousands of 501st or other starwars cosplayers who have gone all the way to hand crafting imperial officer code cylinders or helmet greeblies etc - as anything I have put regarding random fantasy wimmins #13-157.

And Denzark you are very much correct there that I don't know how much effort she put into her armour so I should just assume so. And I was wrong to be so flip with my point as I made it poorly and came off as crass - it was meant to be that one can put little or lots of effort in to one's cosplay (being a Stormtrooper can take almost no effort) but that doesn't matter and judging someone by effort (real or perceived) is a bad thing to do.

Similarly I don't want to be crass and write off other's efforts - I have been coming off even more poorly so I apologise for being flippant about those other costumes - I think DR had it right about effort being subjective and their costuming skills are a million miles more advanced than anything I could do.

Likewise, if my use of the word 'wench' offended anyone I apologise as this is not a thread where I intended to do that - I will take care in the future not to stereotype mediaeval females who are not obviously noble ladies, warriors or magic users, as wenches.

This is actually one of the main problems I have with cosplaying - how much effort should you spend? How recognisable should the character be? How do you even start making the outfits?

I mean, I'm doing a Cadian Sergeant cosplay, got a resin Chainsword and am going to hopefully build a Bolt Pistol and Flak Armour, with a few hang grenades, canteens and the like as dressing. That's great, and compared to a thrown-together cosplay might look cool, but pales in comparison to some of a the truly stunning outfits I've seen at cons.

I think it's very much like painting an army. Pick someone you really like the idea of cosplaying, try your best to make it look good, take advice on how to improve, and feel proud of what you've achieved. I can't help but feel that saying, "these cosplays didn't really put in the effort," is a bit like turning to a thread with a nicely-painted camo scheme Rhino and going, "Astartes don't use camo, learn your fluff." It's not wrong, but it sidesteps the quality of the work to attack the content.

Came up pages back, but never be overly critical of other's efforts at dressing up (still be a cold day in hell before I use the 'c' word. No, not that one. That one I use all the time. The other one). Not everyone has the budget or skills to do movie replica level stuff. Just appreciate that they put their all into it, and offer positive feedback, perhaps sewing tips, or materials which are easier to work with and so on.

As you say, it's the same as the painting of a miniature. Nobody starts off at Golden Daemon level, and relatively few people are interested in painting to that standard, so don't be a Richard to anyone. Offer tips, or even better, demonstrate techniques to them - if they're interested.

Even buying cosplays requires a certain degree of effort, normally around accessories props etc. But you'd be amazed what you can actually buy made to order.

Also never offer to paint anyone grey it's far too much effort.

And when it comes to the word wench I use it affectionately as a pet name, though I have seen older people who over hear me doing such look at me like I've kicked their puppy.

Reminds me of LFCC last Summer. Me and a friend had just watched Gurren Lagann, and bumped into a girl dressed as Yoko Littner. We both asked for her picture, and I noticed her boyfriend in the photo had the expression of someone who wished his girlfriend had chosen a different outfit.

I had a replica that was made off a replica mauzer, so it allowed for trigger and hammer cocking, but it was solid through the core of the barrel and body. That one looks to be the same quality.

I'm only in my 30's but I have to say you need to see the 60's Batman TV show. Eartha Kitt and Julie Newmar both played Catwoman at various times and set it up for a long run as a sexy character on TV and in the movies. In fact, I would even have to say that the most recent version (Hathaway) is far less sexy than the original screen versions.
