View Full Version : Your Army's Theme Music

I'm sure there's been a thread about this, but I can't find it, so let's have another.

What do you imagine is the theme music for your army? Which artists, albums, or even songs best evoke their spirit?

Posts to YouTube videos are encouraged!

This theme follows my (when I get them) Baharroth-led Swooping Hawk army. Just replace Superman with Baharroth and you can easily visualize just why this music is the best fit for the army. I should probably point out you should turn this music way up and everything else down low, it is spine tingling and amazing to listen to like that. The build up to the final crescendo is just......unbelievable. It gives me these visions of Superman/Baharroth soaring to the heavens, a shining light amongst the darkness.

The only music to ever play when a tyranid swarm is descending upon a terrified foe is classical.

Ideally this

I like the idea of my Kabal of Dark Eldar diving from the night sky while their raiders play 'Beethoven' from Beethoven's Last Night by Trans Siberian Orchestra. The rock tones and plunging notes add a nice element of menace to an already dramatic classical piece.

I don't know about anyone else, but there is only one song that runs through my head when setting my army out on the table:

Megadeath: Crush 'em.

Look at the lyrics - there is no more perfect song for 40K (or fantasy either, really...)
Lyrics link addy for your reading pleasure (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/m/megadeth/crush+em_20091423.html)

I mean, come ON! "Roll the dice, don't think twice, and we CRUSH, CRUSH 'EM!"
Extra base is a necessity. :D

Da Gof Rockerz

I wrote my Ork armies theme music, drawing inspiration from Battle Fleet Gothic as well as 40K.

The band is called Da Gof Rockerz and they travel through the Ooniverse in the Space Hulk known as Da Boot. When the fleet is ready to go into battle Da Boyz put on a raucous Koncert in preparation for the coming Waaagh!

We wrote six songs for "Live From Da Boot". The video is for "Da Red Button" which features a space battle, an exploding 'ead and of course speed freaks.

Well, now I'm intrigued.

Is that at me? Well basically, I disagree the idea that thrash metal / Metallica stuff is the appropriate Ork music. The model for Orks is British hooliganism and I think what gets me most in an orky mood is lots of British Ska and punk. Orks are basically a bunch of ecstatic skin-heads, after all. Some of the stuff I linked was perhaps a little strong. Here's some milder stuff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE1ct5yEuVY (The JAM. "We've got enough for everyone")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l6vTw97QWs (Carter USM - just great build up music for a battle but I can just see those hordes of green all chanting "na-na-naa-na- Na na na na naaa")

Snakebites I can imagine getting a bit Celtic so anything by the Rumjacks would be good for them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDTQQWSmo8s

The only time I see the orks getting more sophisticated than this is when the Evil Suns arrive who enter battle to one song and one song only:

The only theme songs I've ever really though about were Chosen Ones by Dream Evil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPyBCDeFCck) for Space Marines, Disposable Heroes by Metallica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRqCOIsTx8M) for IG, and The Thing That Should Not Be by Metallica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HihhEe0U-ps) for Chaos.

However, when I was playing Dark Souls, I'd put on Pandora with gothic metal music, and I think that same strategy would work for Sisters of Battle.

Personally I think Mick Foley, was more than responsible for the highlights of HHHs career :)

Give the man his due; Foley didn't carry him. His workrate in 2000 in particular was astonishing. Granted, Foley did everything to put him over; made him look like a god. But Royal Rumble 2000? The street fight? That right there is one of the top matches of all time, and it's a credit to HHH as much as Foley. Foley made him a star, but it would never have happened if HHH lacked the ring presence and work rate. I mean, he fought that whole match with a four inch splinter of wood through his calf muscle, and didn't let it show; the man deserves credit for that. HHH's problem was always that he was more of a mark for bodybuilding than wrestling - when he came back after his quad tear in 2002, he got the pop of the night at Royal Rumble, but he was waaaaaay too big. He'd lost all his speed, all the intensity, and never quite got it back. It was only made worse by his absolute burial of absolutely everyone on the roster (Booker T getting the worst of it IMO. 18 seconds before making the pin? At 'Mania? After only one Pedigree? Made Booker look like a complete chump, totally unnecessary and counterproductive to good business. It's actually why I don't think HHH can be counted as one of the true greats - he never really elevated anyone else to superstardom, unlike some like say, Ric Flair did for Sting. I suppose you could count Batista, but that always felt like cronyism to me, rather than genuinely putting business first).

But back in 2000? HHH was the man.

Foley was a godsend though. In his prime, he could make anyone look like a star. There's not been anyone like him since.

For the Tanith First-and-Only, the following two Scottish laments for banished survivors of the 1745 Scottish 'Rising match perfectly, and given that Sergeant Oan Mkoll is named for folksinger Ewen MacColl (who popularized much of this music), I have little doubt Dan Abnett has heard them. Seriously, read them from a Tanith trooper's perspective and you'll see!

"Farewell, farewell, dear Caledon,
Land of the Gael no longer,
A stranger sits thy ancient throne,
In guile and treachery stronger.
Thy brave, thy just, fall in the dust,
On ruin's brink they quiver,
Heaven's pitying eye is closed on thee,
Adieu, adieu forever."

For I must cross the main."

A couple of ideas spring to mind for me:

I don't know that anyone has mentioned DE yet. A track that would suit them is The Step by Visage.

As for IG and their armoured units - Reise Reise by Ramstein just brings it home, and its in German. It makes me feel so warm and fuzzy.

I'll try and post the links when I find the tracks on my systems. I have a nice story to go with the first time I heard The Step.
