Hello BoLSers,

This will be my general project log and 1st BoLS painting thread, I'm still debating whether I'll break up my large projects into their own threads, as I tend to work all over the place with my hobby.

To start off, it will be an Addams Factory vs Games Workshop theme. Where I take a kit I think looks a bit off and try to make it look more aesthetically pleasing.

I'm doing this for a friend of mine, helping him get his Iron Hands off the ground. So please keep in mind it looks dreadful due to being metho'd to break down the super glue and pulled apart.

The Stormtalon in its original intended form, a bit of a cluttered flying brick in my opinion.

My take on the Stormtalon 'Sierra' Pattern

I was going to put up a few more, but alas 4 image limit. Expect more in future updates.

Thanks for looking, C&C always welcome.

MORE!!!

Anything that gets rid of the horrid tonka toy chin turret is good in my book. I like moving the missile pods onto the engines. You are now getting more of an A-10, or SU-25 vibe out of the craft - much better!

I'm not unhappy with my Exorcists stormtalon, but if - as some suspect - the Blood Angels get the stormtalon in their new codex, I will do this conversion when I add another to my collection. This is awesome.

I hate that stupid stormtalon model, it looks like it wouldn't be able to stay airborne. I think your is a great improvement and looks lis a far more realistic imperial aircraft design. The missile pods combining to extend the wings looks great. I look forward to seeing it painted.

Apologies for delays, moving house and a family wedding occurred.

Thanks all for your kind words and approval, your encouragement is what keeps me going when I stare at my vast plastic hordes demanding paint and attention.

Without further ado, the Sierra pattern Stormtalon in its completed build form (I'm yet to get the canopy from my friend, I'd really like to see how that looks on there too)

This is the plasticard modding used to mount the missiles to the engine, using .040 styrene and shaving down the wing mount (I'm pointing to it in pic 3) until it's flush with the plasticard.

You've managed to capture the gull-wing form of the other Imperial/Astartes VTOL aircraft. Gives it a better feel of continuity with them while also vastly improving upon the overall silhouette, and unless I'm missing something it's a deceptively simple conversion. Kudos on some great work, I may do the same at some point down the road...

Thanks :) I just sort of found my way there playing around with blu-tack, but I did want to keep a VTOL/gunship profile, it's hard enough to make this thing look vaguely aerodynamic and I definitely didn't want to make a fighter.

And yes, it's very straight forward and aside from a little plasticard it's all 'in kit' so you won't need to purchase bits or beg friends. Mounting the assault cannons took some careful filing and dry fitting to get right, during the blue tack phase I didn't realise the support struts I attached them to were angled. Also keep in mind you need to sacrifice a key part of the cockpit for this conversion.

And in the mean time, here is an older Addams Factory vs Games Workshop project..

This fellow is one of the centre pieces from my World Eaters, I've loved defilers in concept for a long time (Deamon engines <3) but was always disappointed with the kit.

Key things I didn't like; It was bottom heavy with spindly looking 'arms' and the fore claws looked like they would topple it forward if it stopped using them to support its weight. Then the head was sitting on a stalk which A: baffled me B: made it look weak and vulnerable C: didn't fit in with the chunky aesthetic of the rest of the model.

Here is my take on the defiler

Here is the Baal Predator I'm working on for a friend. When I received it, it was already built (not to my standards +__+) and primed black so the finish is very dark and he's okay with that, but I would have preferred starting from a grey/pre-shaded primer. But it's all practice so I can't complain.

It's very shiny, I sealed it with Tamiya Flat and it went cloudy from humidity, so I needed to reseal it with Minitaire satin to correct it (It was Minitaire Flat coat which actually finishes like a Satin finish). Sorry about the horrid lighting.

So in anticipation of the new wave of pretty bugs coming our way, I wanted to finally strip, clean up and paint all the Tyranids I've got scattered around my collection.

I'm something of a Genestealer magnet you see, people keep giving them to me and I have lots of models to play with. I kind of feel like the RSPCA for hive fleets, people buy Tyranids because they're cute and interesting at first, then they sh** the rug and eat the cat... Next thing they're dropped on my doorstep in a cardboard box.

Suffice to say, I have a lot. So goal was a scheme that looked quite nice, but could be achieved very quickly and perhaps enhanced for larger/prettier models.

In the end, it harken'd back to the author of my obsession with murderous space bugs, the Alien films.

Images like these are where I'm aiming for similarity, on a very rough level at first. I'm drawn to the subtle blue-aquas and khaki browns emerging from the black.

http://i.imgur.com/4TsKSOc.jpg

Unfortunately getting good pictures of my progress seems to be a whole other challenge that escapes me.

This is TS-0 (Test Stealer Zero) He's just base coated, but his base coat is sneaky with colour. It's a hybrid of (Minitaire airbrush paints) Raven Black, Nautilus Blue and Dark Green in a 1/1/1 ratio. My hope is that during the wash/shade/ink stage, the blue/green in the inks will draw those colours out a little more and hopefully make the highlights appear more blended and the like too. My lofty goal of being lazy and achieving awesome has had a lot of thought put into it.

Again, I apologise, the camera will keep us all guessing until the end.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee260/Usiel-40K/Tyranids/TSBasecoat.jpg

This is TS-1, he's been dry-brushed with AV-Game Colour: Shadow Grey. This paint has been the easiest to work with and was still dry-brushable with the Minitaire drying retarder added to my pallet. I like this effect but I think it's more of a final highlight than the bridge between the base and the wash stage.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee260/Usiel-40K/Tyranids/TSI.jpg

This is TS-2, he's been dry-brushed with Citadel colour: Steel Legion Drab, this didn't come out as clearly/cleanly as I would have liked, but I may use this as a basis for the bio-weapons. Gods these pictures are lousy.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee260/Usiel-40K/Tyranids/TSII.jpg

And finally TS-3, this guy is actually almost colour matched to the Warriors in the picture above, he was dry-brushed with Citadel colour: Stegadon Scale Green/Kabalite Green 2/1 ratio. Unfortunately, I'm certain the wash stage will just swallow this colour, but damn it looks good. It's also a pain in the arse to keep mixed up and wet for that much dry-brushing.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee260/Usiel-40K/Tyranids/TSIII.jpg

My final thoughts are perhaps I should mix Stegadon Scale Green with Shadow Grey (AVGC), getting my dark blue/aqua with enough light in there to make it pop and stand out after the wash phase.

Any thoughts or suggestions, ideas, criticism could help me along at this point. And I have many more stealers to test on.

Thanks for looking!

They all look good, but I like the 3rd one the best, I think it's more of a match for the Xenos from Aliens and looks creepier for it. After that it's number 1. Not too keen on the last pic personally, too "green" for my tastes.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks amigo, the first pic is TS-0 which is only the base/primer coat. And number 3 is TS-2 which is the Khaki coat which I based off of the colours from the Alien 3 Xenomorph.

So I've been looking at using cheap nasty techniques to finish painting my crawly space bug models, I did this because I kept getting stuck on my original ideas for the paint scheme.

I've learned a valuable lesson from this; When in doubt creatively, never retreat, push yourself.

And 95% complete. Not that there's really anything missing, but the scheme needs a little polish here and there. Most notably, I'm not happy with the claws and talons. I also used the wrong blue as the base colour, but he'll blend in with the rest of his kin when they're done.

Cool conversion far better than the storm talon as we know it. Tempted to try one myself.

Cool redo.
Reminds me of the Thurderbird from "Silent Death".

Retrofitted 'Mortis Pattern' Heresy Era Dreadnought
Carcharodons Astra (+++ CrossRef - Space Sharks +++)
Venerable Ancient - Name Unknown

A WIP from my personal collection, repainted in my favourite chapter/legion colours. I converted the Space Crusade Dread using Ravenwing bits and a CSM bike, originally it was in pre-heresy Dark Angel colours.

Just airbrushing and masking atm. The details on the face I'm relying on the oil-wash to pick out.

Hey guys, looks like I've gotten a little sidetracked with things and neglected my log. There has been progress on many fronts, I'll start updating my log over the next week or so to bring things up to speed with the Space Sharks; Nurglith Cult etc.

To kick things off, I latched onto the rumour mill a month or so ago and started spending a lot of time pondering Orks..

BAD MOONZ IS BEST MOONZ! WAAAAAAGGHH!!!!!

Glad to see you back updating again, your Bad Moonz look great, nice and grubby like a true Ork should be...

I have to say that Battlewagon looks astounding, just how big is it?

Thanks, it's no bigger than others. I've not done much converting on it other than the rear muffler and getting the separate Killcannon/Lobba option from GW mail order (The Deffrolla is going on my next Wagon).

I love birthdays, so does Mork

BAD MOONS STOMPA 'MEGA-URUK MORKSMASHA' WWAAAAGGHHH!!!!

There are some pics of the mock up Kustom Belly-Kannon in there and I also have plans to incorporate a Gaze of Mork into its head and give it a propa grim Megajaw, me and the Mek agreed the one that came with was too runty.

Happy with it so far, debating alternative ways to go about the Belly-Kannon and how to better Orkify it.

Something I threw up for my friends who haven't seen it in person yet

Regarding the marine Stormtalon VTOL.Inventive redesign that changes the whole feeling of the model. Give it a sense of motion and menace. Very nice.

That Stompa is incredible and very Orky!
