So I want to give up video games, I'm 21 male and I've quite simply had enough! They've started to dominate my life making me somewhat of a social recluse! a situation I'm not enjoying I can admit I have a serious addiction, now I'm not saying I'm going cold turkey no doubt I'll be picking up the pad from time to time.
However I'm looking for another interest one more social like wargaming to take up my hobbies and interests and I can;t decide where to start! Mainly I'm just looking to join a great community something which Bols looks like it has, however what gaming platform would you guys suggest? to take up
I'm particularly interested in the lore and models of 40k from all platforms I've looked at thus far however I'm open for suggestions!
Has anyone else here suffered the same experience and managed to replace videogames in their life?
Cheers guys

Welcome!
So it sounds like you have decided on 40K as your game of choice.
I always tell new people to go look at the models and go with whatever YOU think looks cool. If you like the models, you will enjoy collecting and building up your army.
The rules change over the years, so every army has its up and downs over time - but the models will always be there.
So my first question is what appeals to you from the armies available?

Welcome mate, yep I started 40k for pretty much the very same reason. 8 years ago my life revolved around going to the gym, going to work and then heading home and playing WoW. My wife got proper pissed at me to the point of talking divorce. Then I got the special news that we were expecting our 1st child and I basically gave my WoW account away. Concentrated on being a better husband and started preparing for fatherhood. However I needed "something" that wouldn't piss the mrs off but would still scratch my geek itch. Now the problem with video games is no matter how much time and effort you put into a game what do you really have to show for it ? Feck all. But this hobby of ours is so creative, so varied and you get to see your painting get better and you can actually hold the hours of effort you put in .
As for which game to play, well I only really play 40k and it's such a varied game with so much choice as far as armies go. Not only do we have many different armies, but within each codex is the ability to make either a competitive army or something more connected to the background of the codex (Fluffy).
You could either go for the starter box set which gives you 2 armies for cheap, a rule book and basically all you need to get playing. Or go for an armie you like the look of aesthetically. I'm only talking about 40k here as I don't play anything else. You need to go with what sparks your imagination, it could be 40k or Warmachine or any other of great games. To be honest I personally think here on BoLs 40k is what seems to grab everyone's attention most.
Whatever your choice, welcome to BoLs it's a great bunch of people who will generally answer any questions you may have. Dive into the forums nobody bites :D

One thing to keep in mind is that many of us are multi-gamers. We love to collect, paint, and play a wide variety of games. I myself play almost a dozen different games (40k, Fantasy, BFG, Infinity, Warmachine, Hordes, Confrontation, Malifaux, Firestorm Armada...). There's nothing saying you can't divide up your resources between as many games as catch your eye, and it definitely opens your horizons in terms of people to play with!

Finding another hobby is a good start, particularly a more social one if you're concerned about getting out of the house. A gym membership is another good option, particularly one that promotes a sense of community like a Crossfit gym. Between work, working out with friends, and warhammer with other friends, I don't spend too much time lazing around.

Cheers guy's I've decided to go with a Grey Knights force and immediately sunk a near £200 into doing so! I love the aesthtics of Knights in Space so I've got my game of choice and army of choice just can't wait to actually start playing now!
I'm glad to get such a positive response from the community I can tell I'm going to like it here haha.
Now lets slay some demons of the 41st Millennium!

Welcome aboard! 40k is a fine choice if you're interested in the lore, Black Library has a great selection of stuff to get you up to speed. Even though not directly related to your specific army, I highly recommend at least the first few books of the Horus Heresy series (starting with Horus Rising (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440354a&prodId=prod1160001a)) to give you an idea of how we ended up with this gritty, dark, war stricken 41st millenium.

With about 15 terminators (4 psycannons, 4-5 hammers, a stave, banner, apothecary, and a mix of swords and halberds for the rest), about 20 power armor GKs (4 psycannons and the rest swords), a rifleman dreadnought or two, a land raider, some rhinos, and Coteaz plus a magnetized terminator hq for Draigo, Grand Masters, etc, you can have a solid, fairly large army with plenty to start out with. Once you decide what type of army you like, you can easily expand from there.

Hey Bud and Welcome! If you ever want any advice on Games Workshop stuff never be afraid to ask! I'm always willing to help anyone that's willing to listen :D
What is it that's drawn you to 40K in particular? And Grey Knights are a great starting army I reckon, so top choice on that one dude!

Hey there Cheers! i'm loving how friendly everyone here is hah, literally think this is the nicest forum I've ever been on am i just browsing the wrong pages? where's all the brodacious space marine trolling I was forewarned about haha.
I think It was definitely the aesthetics and the lore that drew me to 40k, the game may not be the most tactical and indepth but it sure looks like fun! and i think I had to go with the platform I'm going to enjoy assembling and painting the most and there in fell my love of the Grey Kinghts.

I started myself of with an initial investment of some terminators, a dreadknight (that model is just too damned cool!) Grey Kight power armour and a Librarian, that's all my budget could stretch to at the moment, where do you reckon next?

I'd probably grab a Dreadnought and a couple Rhinos. That, and if you get up to around 10 Terminators/paladins and 10-20 GKSS, you can field a fairly sizeable army.

Podcast wise, I'm not sure about ones that cover all of wargaming, but I've always enjoyed the Independent Characters, and, in the earlier days (first 40 or so installments), LATCS (Life after the cover save) Not so game heavy is LATCS but makes me giggle. IC's is well rounded for my peference
