So, it's generally agreed upon that the new Dark Elf release is one of the finest GW have put out in a long time so what are people actually going to buy?:)
I've ordered:
Limited Edition army book (cos Witch Elves!)
Magic Cards
2 Cauldrons of Blood/Bloodwrack Shrines
2 War Hydrae/Karidbyss
4 Witch Elves/Sisters of Slaughter
2 Dreadspears/etc Going to replace the front ranks of my two big warrior hordes with new models rather than buy whole new regiments.
I haven't been this excited for a new release since Vampire counts convinced me to start a whole new army.:)
Deadlift

Nothing, not really that impressed to be honest :(. I'm also wondering why Dwarfs, Brits and WE are behind these in the schedule. But there is always next month to look forward to :p, oh wait it's this lot again right ?

Weird.:p Dwarfs are the next Fantasy release and Brets are rumoured to be on the way as well. Heard something about Wood Elves but I forget what.

I was hoping the Dark Elf release would kick me back into fantasy, with my armies mostly still packed in the boxes I moved house in two years ago as 40K and FoW stole my gaming time, but I just look at those Witch Elves/Sisters of Slaughter and think they are horrible. The (in my mind) poorly executed attempt to make them look dynamic has resulted in a bunch of really strange poses that turn me off the models as a whole.
The Giant Cauldron kit looks OK if a little cartoonish, but without enough witches to go with it (As I'm not planning on EVER buying the new ones) it'd be out of place with what I have.
Shadowblade and the big monster kit both annoy me by having the models (one of the handlers in the monster kit) sculpted on integral scenic bases - I personally hate that, but could probably work around it on the monster, but I just won't bother with the underwhelming Shadowblade sculpt.
The new warriors are a welcome replacement and I can see myself buying a fair few if I refresh my Dark Elves, but I wouldn't revisit the army for them.
I'm now left hoping that the second wave contains some models that take my breath away, but as the dark samurai looking current Executioners are some of my favourite models GW has ever done, they're going to have to be fairly impressive since they are apparently replacing them.

I shall be buying one of each. Except Shadowblade cos I already have an assassin and he isn't amazeballs. And the warriors because I already have a stack of them. And the collectors book because a cover without words and a book mark does not an extra £25 quid make. GW needs to take a leaf out of BL's book about how a collectors book should work- extra content and exclusivity. And for probably the first time ever, I'm going to complain about GW prices. 35 quid for ten plastic infantry models. Da fuq?

There's nothing wrong with him, he's just rather ho hum, especially when set against the rest of the releases.

Yep this release convinced me to start a new dark elf army. I already got the amazing black dragon kit and this release is terrific. I like every miniature and that never happens to me in a release. After seeing the leaked pictures I was amazed but the new pictures impressed me even more. The Hydra duel kit is amazing and the khabadrys is lovely while the hydra suffers from a bad paint job but can be very cool with some darker colors. The core kit is solid and I love the new crossbows. Shadow blade is decent but is nice to put in a unit as decoration. Witch elves are gold just as the cauldron kit.
I will buy the book, cards and warriors and the Kharibdyss as a beginning.

I don't like the hydra. I loved the last one but this one turns me off, I just really dislike what they've done with the heads. They look like harmless snub-nosed skinks. (A better paint job might save it. I'll have to wait and see what people do with it.) Some of the witch bits might gets mixed in with my dark eldar wyches, and I think I may have to see if someone in my area is making the Cauldron but doesn't want the medusa so I can buy it off them cheaply (the rest of the kit is a bit meh, but I want her and maybe her mirror).

I wouldn't argue with someone over the hydra, seems to be very hit and miss. I love it personally. I think different angles help, not sure the heads look so stubby:

certainly the army book. I had planned to buy quite a lot, but honestly it has crossed the mark on pricing for me. I could just about accept £30 for the sisters of avelorn, but yet another price hike has killed an awful lot of my enthusiasm. has there actually been a release this year that hasn't upped prices? for now might just be one box of crossbowmen, and a box of witches. Shadowblade is a great assassin model, just in no way a special character. I will get one to use as a generic assassin. If Shadowblade can still jump out of enemy units then I think he needs to be in assassin's creed white so he hides in high elves better... I did want a cauldron, but not at £45, it will have to wait. should have been coven throne cost.

Ordered Book and Cards.
Models will have to wait!
As for Shadowblade, seems the plain design is very deliberate. He's not a showy killer, so lack of detailing. His handiwork speaks for itself!

I am sure it is, but it just doesn't really work for me. or for others, it seems. Compare him to death master snikch, who is also stealthy but still looks awesome and stands out as a character.

I don't play dark elves, I can't cram the stairs into my lizardman army and while the lines of the cart work okay I am pretty sure the contraption would look incredibly dodgy as any sort of dark eldar skimmer. :p I tend to look at things from a conversion standpoint and the model as a whole costs too much to merely hack up for terrain.

Just the book and the cards for me.
I do like the Cauldron and the Medusa figure as well as the witch elves but I don't play Dark Elves. If nobody wants their medusa I'll happily take it off your hands :-)
I do sympathize with Dark Elves players though as 10 figures for $60 USD is pretty crazy (especially if Witch Elves are moving to core). It's actually cheaper to use the raging heroes blood vestals (not by much).
I have to say I'm not fond of the hydra myself. If I played DE I'd either use the previous one or buy the reaper hydra.

I'd do a Khainite army, but not at $70 per box for my 11 point Core models. Too bad, it seems like GW put a lot more effort into this release than the High Elf one.

I was really excited for this release and I do like most of the models. Like others I'm unsure about the hydra heads, I like the realism of them but agree they look more like a harmless diplodocus rather than a carnivore. But other than that they are all good.
But I was most excited for the Witch Elves / Sisters of Slaughter kit, it's one plastic kit that has been a long time coming in my opinion. And then I saw the price. £35 for 10 models is atrocious and exactly why I'm winding down my GW purchases. I actually first thought it had to be a typo for £25 which would be more reasonable, until I saw it on other websites at that RRP.
They have clearly realised that a lot of people will want them to match the DE sorceress, or for conversion opportunities and priced them accordingly.
That said, I might indulge in a Cauldron for bits...

Also, did anyone else spot that the one click Cult of Khaine box at £194 contains £185 worth of models?

The blurb does say it's based around a Sorceress, who costs the same as the shortfall, so they probably forgot to put her in or forgot to lower the price when they took her out.

Looking at the Hydra kit, it seems to be on a chariot base rather than a monster base, but still, it is very decently priced at $70 AUD. I like it a lot. I'm personally not a fan of the Kharibdyss, I really like the Hydra though. The picture of it with the alternate bluish-green colour scheme does it more justice IMO.

I'm going to scour for a few bits to make some arrow-filled dark elf corpses for my wood elves bases.
Of course, my models will look like the wood elves won the fight. My actual battle results will be dramatically different.

I may get the Medusa to convert into a Slaanesh Daemon Prince for my 40K Daemon army.
Was thinking about getting witch elves to make a unit of Daemonettes, but that price is just ridiculous. After all, it's frikking plastic.
Need to wait for Raging Heroes to release their Dark Elf plastic army, sure they will be cheaper and also kick arse miniatures.

I really really want to do dark elves as a sister force for my mono khorne WoC. But £%@∞ Prices!
I think unit fillers will possibly save my @ss though. For the moment nothing. I have malifaux 2E to enjoy and lizardmen to paint and woc to paint and tau to paint and blood angels to finish and then salamanders to finish. Then a little infinity I need to polish off. This is all AFTER I finish gaming board I'm making this weekend.

I'm loving the stats of the Kharibdyss and I want to see if I can make it look like it's coming out a watery base to attack.

No kidding, they've just released a batch of 10 of their concept art pics for the Dark Elf army they plan to launch on Kickstarter once they are done with the current Toughest Girls of the Galaxy Kickstarter. Some really nice/nasty ideas in there. They have said they have sci-fi versions of them worked out as well (though no art of those as yet):

While I'm eagerly awaiting the RH Dark Elves as well I don't recall them saying they wuld be plastic and even if they are a form of plastic I doubt they will be much cheaper than GWs offerings. I love the Cauldron of Succubi.:)

well my initial trial army list looks like:
Level 3 Supreme Sorceress
Death Hag Battle Standard on Cauldron of Blood
Two Assassins
2x20 Crossbowmen
20 Corsairs
20 Witch Elves
20 Executioners
20 Sisters of Slaughter
Hydra
2500
I would like another monster in there, this list is primarily designed around the stuff I want to try out, and the fact everything comes in boxes of ten :p. after a game or two I will start refining it. the only magic item in there is the razor banner for the sisters, and I have 40 pts left over for something interesting.
Mr Mystery
10-13-2013, 04:31 AM
Duh. Noob.
Your competitive list is clearly sub-optimal and garbage. You haven't taken a level four caster......
Tcoch. Solid C-, definitely fourth tier.......
:p
Kirsten

I used to go level four then thought actually it isn't necessarily essential, and the sorceress gets +1 to cast anyway.
Mr Mystery
10-13-2013, 04:40 AM
I was being silly :p
Pretty solid list right there! Not sure I'd take a single unit of 20 Sisters myself, but with a smidge of magicybuffbuff, could be really nasty.
Kirsten
10-13-2013, 04:45 AM
yes I know, that was quite clear.
depends who I face, my games are most often against vampire counts. so with their lack of shooting against me, most units will get in to combat unscathed so 20 sisters will slaughter pretty much any unit of his. the other army I regularly face are dwarfs, and I suspect the witch elf/cauldron unit, and the hydra will draw most of the shooting, again leaving the sisters without too many wounds going in. I'd like to pitch them against some long beards, therefore getting that lovely +1 to hit and wound and negating their ranks.
Mr Mystery
10-13-2013, 04:53 AM
That could be cool!
I need to go look into my other Lores now. Been yonks since I had access to them all in a single army.

I've got at 2400:
Dreadlord on Black Dragon w/Ogre Blade and Armour of Destiny
Death Hag on Cauldron, BSB with Obsidian Blade
Lvl2 Sorceress, Dispel Scroll (and probably Dark Magic)
40 Dreadspears, Full Command, Banner of Eternal Flame
30 Witch Elves, Full Command, Razor Standard
5 Cold One Knights, Full Command, Pennant of [Reroll First Failed LD]
Reaper Bolt Thrower
War Hydra, Breath Attack
5 Warlocks, Warlock Master
Thoughts? My brother tells me it looks quite nasty. :)

Kirsten
10-17-2013, 05:44 PM
well the hydra is wonderful to put together. the cauldron is very straightforward, not half as fiddly as it might look. pretty tricky to get it all true though, it is a solid construction, no problem there, but there is enough movement in some components that you might end up with wheels slightly out of alignment, hull slightly skewed etc. it is pretty hard to tell until you have most of it done, by which time it has probably dried, so just take care.

It looks like a really solid list to me. Personally I would prefer corsairs more then spear men but with a dragon I can see the use of more ranks. What is the plan with COB? Put it in a unit or standalone. Also while I like the idea of a hag with obsidian blade its makes it a even more expensive glass canon. Its very easy to get rid off so I would probably go naked.

The Cauldron is with the Witches to form the WiTCH GHETTO!
(darkthrone made me do it)
I, also, have been thinking seriously about corsairs. Maybe i'll expend the plan to three thousand, because I would like to represent three 'coalitions' in the army. The Dreadlord and their military forces (Dreadspears, Bolt Thrower, Cold One Knights) the Khainite cults (Cauldron, Witches, maybe Executioners?) and the pirates (Corsairs, monsters). I feel that gives a platform for fun, fiction, painting variability, and a smattering of cool characters.

The possibilities with the new book are awesome. I am thinking of doing a corsair raiding/monsters themed list with a converted COB into a shrine of Mathlann. I hope I can convert the new black guard into dreadblades. I have never done a themed army so this my chance.
