Great for making scenery with, but i think the "battle stairs" concept may be just a bit daft.
All the components looks fantastic individually but put together it just doesn't work for me.

Those witches look amazing, a ranking nightmare im sure but a small price to pay for great witches. I dont like either of the new beasties but they wouldnt really fit in my khainite army anyways so im not bothered

Wyches look like pretty amazing so far, and the snake hydra is my favourite of the two, though I appreciate tentacle maw's style. Hope there are still female warriors though.

Awesome release! I love the greek theme behind the new dark elves. At first I disliked the hydra but it is growing on me. The paint job of the hydra heads look like a mouth with teeth . But after watching it a couple of times I think it are scales (?). The swordmen however suffer a little bit of their pose (spear and crossbow look awesome). I love the shadowblade model too . Can't wait to build a dark elf force. On a sidenote, I think the forgeworld merwyrm is a nice addition to this release (proxy).

Thanks for the clearer pics! The Khaine statue is the only thing that looks strange to me (weird proportions), but it could just be the angle of the photo and the paintjob. I can definitely see the Sisters of Slaughter being used for Dark Eldar Bloodbrides.

Fair enough, certainly DElder will be ahead on cross compatibility terms. But I think on a pure aesthetic level DElves are ahead. Also remember we have more kits coming next month or at the end of this one.:)

To be more clear, they are great from a design and sculpting standpoint, I'm not saying the models are bad. I think I just have a difference of opinion on the aesthetic, however, if they have an interesting story that may sway me, or it could just be the pictures and when I see the models for myself, I may feel differently. I find myself wondering what the Executioners, Black Guard, and Dark Riders will look like, given what we see here.

Awesome. I'm hoping that one of my buddies gets the Cauldron of Blood and builds it as that so I can buy the medusa off of him to convert into a Keeper of Secrets.

Lots of potential here. Chaos Cultists, Daemonettes, or even Traitor Penal Legion! And of course it looks like a lot of this, style wise, will work quite well with Dark Eldar...

Though for Dark Eldar, I personally like the sleeker and more militaristic hairstyles. The BigHugeMcLargeMassive hair on those witches does nothing for me.

The Cauldron and the other altar-thingy - yes the look very nice (indeed the witches on it and uh - yessss the meremaid-medusa) - but how do they drive? No cold ones to pull it, no slaves to push it ... magic ? perpetummobile? don´t like that

The Monsters are nice too. I even like the sea-thing - but Hydra goes first!

I realy think about re-entering warhammer with DE ... but i have tons of plasticsspures to assemble and paint for 40K ... not to mention the resin ;-)

Actually Eldar are a very popular army, historically the second best selling army after Marines depending on the age of the codex. The trouble with the Avatar isthat it's GW model is very old and horrible while the FW models are too big and expensive for regular games.

New Releases

All of the new models look great
The DE Army book is written by Matt Ward
The largest dual kit is the Cauldron of Blood which allows you to make either a Cauldron of Blood or a Bloodwrack Medusa. You can also use this kit to make the special character Crone Hellebron.
The next dual kit is Witch Elves and the Sisters of Slaughter – Sisters of Slaughter are apparently the lost daughters of fallen noble houses and look great.
The new DE Core box allows you to make your warriors with Spears, Swords and Shields or Repeater Cross-bows.
The Dual Hydra/Kharibdyss kit looks pretty good, there are pictures of the Hydra with different paint schemes that actually look a lot better than the leaked photo we’ve already seen.
The Special Character Shadowblade is a single pose figure that will come in a clampack
There is a Lore of Dark Magic Card set being released.

Army Special Rules/Points Cost

Dark Elves now have the armywide special rule of ASF (unsure if this will apply to monsters/cold ones)
Dark Elves also have Hatred but presumably only in the first round
Black Guard have eternal hatred
New Rule called murderous prowess allows Dark Elves to re-roll 1′s to wound. Unsure if this will extend to shooting and magic.
There is a new Beastmaster Lord Level Character which costs 300 points when naked on a Manticore
Witch Elves are core and 11 points per model. They can also take magical banners.
A unit of 30 Spear Elves and of 30 Xbow Elves with Full command costs 390 points. Unsure what options were used but that means the warriors were 12 points per model.
A DE Sorceress Hero looks to be 80 points
Cauldrons of Blood still come out of Hero slots and look to have increased in points. They can join units and one of their powers allows a unit to re-roll to wound. In the Batrep a unit with a Cauldron and this buff up deletes a unit of Sobunz.
Bloodwrack Medusas are rare and have a shooting attack called Bloodwrack Stare. Not sure what it does
Hydras can now regain wounds in a manner similar to the Slann with the regen power of the old ones. They are now 180 points, have monster+handler but have to buy their breath weapon.
Lore of Dark Magic – The attribute is called spiteful conjuration and does extra wounds to enemies that have spells cast on them. Unsure of how the mechanic works but could be similar to Tz lore attribute?
Lore of Dark Magic – Only spell mentioned is called Word of Pain and it reduces WS/BS/I
A Dreadlord with Heavy Armour and a Shield on a Black Dragon costs 449 points.
Cold Ones are 30 points and have 2 Attacks, unsure if the cold ones themselves have ASF

It's kinda funny how everyone is already thinking of what other army to use the new models in, haha, same here. Thought how the bald witches would make great daemonettes. How the Medusa would be a great character in warhammer quest. As with many here, we already have huge DE armies so the appeal of the new stuff is some what lost. I'm just hoping the fixed what needed to be fixed in our book and magic. I started fantasy in 5th ed with DE and have loved them ever since until the new books started coming out and they removed soooo many of the magic items, banners, etc. and then saw the HE book, so hopefully ours will get that treatment. I have to say, I'm kinda worried but excited at the same time. As for the harpies, I was digging thru some of my bits boxes a few weeks ago and found mine, never fielded them and now hopefully they will be good to field. My Dark Eldar army is already so big that I can't even think about turning loose of the money to use any in it. Anyhow, happy gaming and hoping for the best!

I might get the army book and *maybe* do a review, but as cool as the models are, Dark Elves just aren't for me.
From the rules I saw, it sounds like they are getting big price increases across the board as expected. Hydras being 180 and having to buy their breath weapon, I'm guessing with a reduced stat-line as well. Apparently they are special now though so that might be nasty! But it seems like Repeater Crossbowmen and Warriors (the Dark Elf Spearmen, right?) are 12 points each going by the battle report army, which is a big, big change. It may have been something lost in translation though, as I seriously doubt Dark Elves would pay 3 points more per Spear-elf than High Elves do. I can definitely see Repeater Crossbowmen being 2 points more than Archers though....

Can´t wait for the book, the high elves had some interesting stories. The 7th edition dark elf army book is quit blank. The older versions were much more mature. I always wonder why every dark elf lord is killed if he fails to achieve victory but Malekith may fail every invasion he ever does. Hope Malus Darkblade gets some interesting fluff....some plot against malekith would be interesting.

The Witch Elves are the best of the bunch, the poses are amazing.

My only major gripe with the new models, are weapon sizes on those DE Warriors. The new warriors follow all the updated "elvish" design ques and sport much sleeker and sexier lines/shapes in their armour and silhuoette (much like the updated HE models), but those spears and swords they wield, sure look cartoonishly big.

But overally great work.

Bit worried about the Executioners though. The skull masks make sense fluff-wise, but I sure loved the old "chainmail bandana" inside the helmet look.

Black Guard look fantastic in my opinion. Executioners are lovely. Disappointed by a lack of female torsos, don't like the armour being for boys only thing Dark Elves have going on now.

Lore seems decent, the Attribute is more lore friendly and characterful than exceptionally powerful which is good.

The next wave looks great. Loving the sword-pegleg Corsair, that's just delightful; going Full Pirate is never a bad idea. The Black Guard are awesome, always liked those. Executioners I like slightly less, but at least they don't just look like Evil Swordmasters now; the distinction between the tall-helmed infantry and skullhats gives them a nice, distinct visual profile.

On the lack of female torsos - a little disappointing, but you can always just pretend that Dark Elves are wearing Sensible Female Armour which isn't deflecting the force of any blow on their chest straight into their hearts. :)

I really like the chariots especially the harpoon chariot. The warlocks are a bit of a miss compared to the witches. The blue/white hair doesn't make it better I must admit. Its to daemonic for my taste. But a nice conversion with glade guard hoods can make a nice conversion if the rules are any good.

Completely underwhelmed. Not a fan of the 'reliant robin' chariot or the dark riders or captain swordleg. Blackguard and executioners are alright though. But again at the latest pricing insanity I won't be buying any of them which disappoints me as I foolishly got a few dark elf pieces before the release.

I think it is pretty weak in comparison to most of the other store attributes. With the exception of beast and shadow, most manage to be fluffy and also quite useful. This will do pretty much nothing.

I quite like the second wave, the black guard and executioners are lovely, as are both versions of the chariot. the fleet master is nice but I think a different pose would have suited, might just be the angle of the picture though. I actually prefer the look of the warlocks to the dark riders, a nice and creepy cursed elf look. I don't like the head of the rider with the two braids and the one on the right just looks like a standard warrior on a horse (though a nice looking model still)

I really love the models, but the price on the WE is just crazy. $60.00 for 10.00 here in the States is borderline robbery. Oh well guess no WE in my army if I start a DE army. The price of Hydra and Cauldron seem on par with the other large kit prices.

Those Black Guard / Executioners look AWESOME. Those Dark Riders look phenomenal, darkly graceful yet menacing. Even the cloned white-skinned, white-haired legions of stabby elf chicks have a fierce beauty about them.

I wish the Empire could be given a fitting look... Some nobility in the faces and forms of Empire models would be inspiring enough to buy into fantasy.

Ah, GW. I'm afraid that you've lost yourselves a High Elf player.
However.....you've gained yourselves a Dark Elf player.

Before anyone cries "bandwagoner", I'll simply say this; the two deciding factors for me actually have nothing to do with the rules. First up is that the ancient Core models were updated for Dark Elves (and look awesome) but the High Elf ones remain. Secondly, I love my monsters; I have so many centre-piece monster models for both games that I'm sure I have more of them than I do regular Infantry! Jokes aside, even though High Elves have the greater range of monsters, Dark Elves have a significant advantage; outside of one or two Phoenixes, I will actually use those monsters. For High Elves, I pretty much have to take an Archmage, a Mage and a Noble BSB, leaving no room for monsters there. The only other place to get them? The highly competitive Rare slot featuring Sisters of Averlorn and Repeater Bolt Throwers. Contrast that to Dark Elves now. Special Bolt Throwers means that my Rare points are up for grabs to the lovely Kharibdyss. In my usual games limit (2000) I can spend up to 1000 on Special, meaning two or three Hydras - particularly at their low cost - is almost a given, and the model for them is awesome, and I can still take Bolt Throwers and a big unit of Black Guard or Executioners, who IMO are better looking than Sword Masters or White Lions.

Going back to the Core models.....the entire range is plastic, and they are all pretty new. The Witch Elves and Spearmen/Swordsmen/Crossbowmen are all new and look good, the Corsairs also look quite cool. Contrast that to High Elves where I can only get Reavers in metal or from IoB, the Spearmen and Archers are horrendously outdated, and the Silver Helms are about as uninspiring a cavalry unit as you can get model-wise. The Sea Guard are great looking though and are quite easy to get.

So pretty much....GW doesn't want me to be a High Elf player. It also bears mentioning that the native lore Dark Elves have will be more useful overall - High Magic doesn't work for High Elves as too many of the spells are direct damage/etc, but they need those ward saves for combat - they have Core units that scream "take me" in the form of blender Witch Elves and more than decent 4+ armoured 2 attack Corsairs (who seem to be a lot better than Sea Guard as well overall with better magic support), not to mention that all Dark Elf Core units can take magic banners while High Elves can only have them on generic Spearmen. Oh, and 2+ armour saves for a foot character without needing magic items due to the sea dragon cloak. Why am I bothering with lion cloaks again? Did I mention those amazing Black Guard and Executioner models?

So yeah, I've been converted to the dark side, and I know I'm going to be very happy for it.
And before anyone says this post is a whine-fest, please remember that this isn't saying the High Elf release/army book was bad - quite the contrary, I still like both a lot - but the Dark Elf one is just amazing!

In saying that, if the rumours are true that 9th is in the middle of next year, I'll wait until then before I start them up as so much could change. I've got to build up my Eldar and plan for the new Tyranids anyway.

Chillwind is, well, it's Chillwind. Pretty useful overall.



I found Chillwind the only useless spell. Its weaker then the previous version in both damage and usefulness. You are lucky to kill a goblin with that spell. Al round its a very cool looking lore without a OP attribute like the high elves (good thing).

Regarding Chillwind, given its best used against ranged units, it will rarely need to do more than drop a Gobbo, or equivalent. Stunties are the only army that jumps to mind where it will really struggle, as they match high T and decent armour. Leadbelchers have the T but not the save.

True but my main problem with the spell that it probably won´t attract any dispel dice. Power of darkness for example will attract probably a few dispel dices which increases our chance to cast one of deadly spells like word of pain. Its not terrible but I did not see the need to nerf it to s2 from str3 and weaken its effect (cant shoot to -1 bs).

In the situations where it's less useful, swap for Doombolt one, which is filth!

I'm not sure £30 for ten models is reasonable. Though I guess that would depend on what your views of ten models for £35 are.
