Halloween is coming in just over a month! Let's talk about costume ideas!

Some of my previous costumes:

Death on Vacation - I painted my face like a skull and wore a Hawaiian shirt.

Fairy Daddy - Green sparkly fairy wings, glitter nail polish, dark suit, green tie. This was the year my whole family dressed as fairies. My favorite part was the nail polish. :)

Space Freighter Captain - Boots, ray-gun, goggles, and a Blue Sun t-shirt.

I need something for this year. Any ideas?

Also, what are you going to be this Halloween?

I was Wario last year. Haven't thought about this year.
I always end up not doing enough (except last year, nailed it last year).
But then we Brits don't do Halloween in a big way.
Aussies, I'll be there, should I be readying a costume?

Teaching people that it is All Hallows' Eve, or Hallowe'en if you prefer.

For some reason, maybe not like being extorted on my door step, I am opposed to this.

Halloween (or Hallowe'en, All Hallow's Eve, Goth Christmas, whatever you want to call it) is with you, no matter where you are. It's in your soul. Spread the spirit, where ever you go!

I believe my gaming group are doing 'Crap Superheroes' as a theme this year. So far I have heard that people will be going as 'Bureaucracy Boy' (armed with rolls of red tape, naturally), The Bimbo (which isn't too much of a stretch for her, if I'm honest) and there was talk of a Captain England, but the idea was scrapped because it might look a little too much like he was part of the EDL...

Me, I'm going as the Human Match. Kinda like the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four, but can only light on fire once...
I shall be wearing my black Morph suit, red pants on the outside, a utility belt made of empty match boxes and a black wizards cape with flames sewn into it I still have from when I was little.

So long as I can avoid wiccans mispronoucing Samhain or Óiche Shamhna (sam-hane WTF?, ookie sham-hin-na RAEG!) I will be happy. Not being an Irish Pagan or much of a Christian I'm not too bothered by it these days.

Halloween is always a pain in the arse to be frank, I struggle every year to find a costume that will fit and usually don't. I can't be arsed with making one as I don't have the time or inclination. Last year I found an idea of the internet. Basically it involved a white t-shirt and a marker pen. I wrote on the t-shirt.

Error :404 costume not found.

Job done. But I got ear ache from everyone for not trying. I tried the sheet, ghost thing and ended up looking like the Stay puff marshmallow man. So this year I'm stuck. I did find a pretty cool Hellboy costume that's in xxxl but it's £50. So if you guys have any ideas fire away :o

I think the "Costume Not Found" one is pretty funny.

Low-Budget ideas:
Wear shorts under a buttoned overcoat and go as a Flasher.
Splash some red ink on an old, white shirt and go as a Homicidal Maniac.

Seconded. We lock up rouge traders for doing this, yet when it is children dressed in silly costumes it is for some reason perfectly acceptable. I always consider getting into the spirit and building a large Wickerman on the drive to warn fools what happens when they enter my land of their own free will, but it's probably quite a lot of effort and the uneducated heathens banging on the door wouldn't get the reference anyway.

Put an empty bowl out in front of your house with a sign that says "Please take one." That way, the kids will think they just didn't get there in time, and you can watch them trudging away in disappointment all night long.

I understand the offense, but there are lots of groups who could be offended by Halloween costumes. Stewardesses, clowns, convicts... Why aren't they pulling those costumes off the shelves? What's the difference?

I guess the difference is that the other groups I listed are professions. They are what they are by choice. The mentally ill are just that: ill. They don't have a choice in the matter, so it's unfair to make fun of them.

But if we're going to pull costumes, then should we also pull all movies and books that negatively depict the mentally ill, too? Should we stop watching Psycho, The Shining, or Silence of the Lambs? These are great movies. How far does it go? Is there a limit to when we're allowed to stop being afraid of offending someone? If so, where is that limit?

Deadlift
09-26-2013, 01:19 PM
Well, all the ones I liked were too small, tried Shrek and didn't fit. :( so now I'm having to go an alternative green route now. Not the obvious one as Wolfie pointed out. I bought an "official" Kermit the frog fancy dress. I'm going to look epic and won't offend anyone. Well maybe someone by the end of the party :D

It was the labelling that was the issue. None actually cared about the costumes. If they had been labelled zombie or horror butcher or something like that then no one would have batted an eyelid. It's the stereotyping, the assumption that all mentally ill people behave/look like that which was objected to, the implicit assumption that all mentally ill people are violent and scary.. No one really objects to the films you mentioned because they are specific examples of crazy, and off the wall at that. There is no assumption, either implicit or explicit, that Lecter in anyway represents all mentally ill people. Giving the costume such a generic label clearly does so.

I think also that those costumes play into old stereotypes, in which psych wards are simply prisons by another name, for criminals who were too clever or too dangerous to go to normal prison. Think of Arkham Asylum.* As the son of a medical professional who's spent quite a lot of time specializing in psych wards, I feel like I can say that's not true, and I can understand the mental health community feeling like it's a stereotype that needs to go, because it's damaging to real people.

* Granted, the Batman villains in Arkham really are either too clever or too dangerous to go normal prison, but Arkham itself exists as a reflection of what was, when Arkham itself was first conceived, a fairly prominent stereotype.

Wildeybeast
09-26-2013, 02:26 PM
One good thing to come out of it is people took to twitter to challenge those old stereotypes and show the 'costumes' modern mental patients wear. Internets for the win.

Have to rummage through the fancy dress stuff in the attic, but probably a mad scientist, maybe Neo for sunday lunch (little more subdued...) and something else, possibly Indiana Jones. For the halloween pub crawl (I may have mentioned it before in this thread, but I forget) there is a theme of silly superheroes, so we have to create a character with crap super powers. I'll be going as The Human Match; all the same powers as the Human Torch, but only once and for a short period of time.

I'll be going as The Human Match; all the same powers as the Human Torch, but only once and for a short period of time.
Those sound excellent. Remember to post some pics!

I sat on the porch and gave out candy and only had about 10 kids show up. It was REALLY raining here.
I dressed up in my Captain Hammer t-shirt. If anyone had asked I would have gladly sang.
(I will not, however, show THE HAMMER to anyone. Well without dinner first)

Best Halloween costume ball ever. 6pm to 4am. Power Girl costume was a hit, not so good for deflecting spillage.

Nope. When they're cousins and/or other people's kids, they just count as pets.

Well they do let me dress them like pets. My cousin-clone dressed up as Supergirl to go with my Power Girl and she dressed her little brother as Ultra Humanite which was *so* adorable.

Does that mean I can get them spayed?

I want an Arcee version.><

Highlights from Halloween party:
One of my brothers picking up a female Jedi with 'You've heard about Order 66, let me show you Order 69' and acting really, really surprised when it worked.
One of my friends and her girlfriend doing a joint costume entitled 'Mystique/FemShep Crossover Slash fiction'
Daenerys Tagargleden and Sansa Stark performing dueling banjos on real banjos.
Boromir telling his girlfriend 'One does not simply...waltz onto dancefloor' right before dancing with her.
One of my little cousins telling someone dressed as some action hero or other that 'her cousin' could beat him up, and the action hero concurring when it was pointed out who I was.

She's certainly a fangirl for him, seeing as she married him!

But I daresay if she ever see's Game of Thrones, she will be a fangirl!
