With the shiny new Space Marines codex, and the shiny new kits accompanying it, I knew it was time to refit my ailing Marines. And so I present Captain Fabian, of the Ultramarines 3rd Company:

The 3rd Company is known as the Scourge of the Xenos after their actions during the Battle of Macragge. In order to thematically tie my units together, all models labeled (Character) are going to sport some sort of Tyranid trophy to mark their victory. In Captain Fabian's case, his Storm Shield is made from a piece of carapace carved from a Carnifex, and a Genestealer head is impaled upon his banner.

As Master of the Arsenal, Fabian has access to some of the finest weaponry in the whole Imperium. But not all of the relics in the Arsenal were placed there by Fabian or his predecessors; some, like the legendary Teeth of Terra, simply appeared uncatalogued and unheralded. It would be impolite at best to let an Emperor-given gift simply collect dust, so Fabian carries the Teeth into battle, to anoint it in the fresh blood of the enemies of the Imperium.

I also do 3rd Company Ultramarines with Captain Fabian, but I used the Forgeworld Mk IV Captain model from the Space Marine MKIV Command Set. I replaced the power sword (because the one that came with the model had a big old hole in the blade) with a relic blade using a Dark Angels sword with the spatulate tip sanded down to a more normal point. I also have a larger percentage of older type equipment on the veterans in the company: my command squad has the FW MK IV Apothecary, MK IV Standard Bearer, MK II Praetor, MK II Marine with meltagun, and various older mark helmets and such on veteran sergeants. This shows that, as the Master of the Arsenal, Captain Fabian makes sure the men in his command have the best of the best equipment wise. Serving the 3rd with both the might of his plasma cannon and the wisdom of his experience, I have a Venerable Dreadnought named Ardias, the former 3rd Company captain who was mortally wounded during the Jorun Retaliation in 143 M41.

Looks really great all round. My only concern is the banner - it looks a bit 'cartoony' compared to the rest of the uber marine. A few more light line highlights on the weapon, helmet mouth and tabard would make it pop a little more but I think it's really good.

Fabian's chainsword is mostly from the Sternguard kit; I took a small Aquilla (from the Hunter/Stalker kit) and bent it around the guard to make a sort of basket hilt;
The armor is all Mk IV from the Sternguard kit, but the banner was a spare one, I think from the old Tac kit, and the banner topper was from the Command Squad box (the Genestealer head in between being a Genestealer head)
Stormshield and base decoration were spare bits from a Carnifex, and there's a couple of throbby bits from the bottom of the bits box inside the shield to make it look like an actual piece of tech, including a pewter turret from I believe the BFG Planet Killer.
