I deliberately left out artificer armours/chapter specific variants (no Sanguinary Guard either), or we'd be here forever. :)

On-topic, mine is Mk 5, the T-34 of the Astartes. Cheap as chips, pressed from sheet steel, hastily thrown together, but IT DOES THE DAMN JOB. Plus all those molecular bonding studs look awesome.

Mark 5. The era where they had to just bolt on extra plates of armor with giant rivets to make it battle worthy. That just resonates bad-@** to me.

Followed closely by Mark 4, because it was, and still is, the most advanced suit of armor.

Mk IV, mostly just down to the helmet and the legs, relative to other marks. The chest plate on the normal Mk IV is a bit meh to me, but on fancy Mk IVs like say, Sevrin Loth's...

despite my fondness for the 'dog face' of mk IV (i do really like it) i just LOVE mk VI.

MK 7. It is what I know as a space marine, having only gotten into the game in the last 6 years. Not that the others aren't awesome, but I have an irrational dislike of the beakies, for an unknown reason.

Sometimes I feel like the "post-Heresy mix-and-match" should be considered its own "mark" of armor. You know what I mean: Mk6 helmets, Mk7 shoulder pads, Mk8 legs... the stuff that chapters are forced to cobble together in the modern setting. I think it's neat and adds a lot of variety to what would otherwise be an extremely straightforward army

Not really. Everyone wants to be a special and unique snowflake; the mk VII loses something due to its ubiquity. It suffers the same ways Ultramarines do - "Everyone else is doing it, so I'm going to be different."

I'm personally surprised Mk IV is so popular. It never really stood out from mk VI for me, and the beaky helmet is a thing of beauty.

Deadlift and BigRed nailed it with the helmet on Mark IV. VI will always be special because of the cream marines box from RT and Deliverance Lost. 30 Marines for $35 or so. It was back in 87', cut me some slack, some of you weren't even born yet :D. The old combat blades/'saws' were awesome, those and the old metal 'bubble' turret's and metal sponsons on the Predators! Does anyone else still have their original 'Proteus' and 'Achilles' Land Raider(s)? I've seen a couple of other original Proteus versions, but I haven't seen another original Achilles.

I would say if there was an available model range, not just one the single pose "Armor Through the Ages" model there would be more. Anvil Industries had bits which would let you make the helmets with plume.

30 Marines for $35 or so.

36 marines for £11.99 over here. :( Beautiful, beautiful kit, still to this day!

Of course, the best boxed set GW ever released was:

http://grailslair.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/terminators_and_tyranids.jpg

All that for £11.99! :( Yeah, the models were wonky (especially the Terminators!) but the Tyranids have never looked more awesome, and the Terminator Librarians, though a bit... off, had a certain charm. I have a squad of them painted up as Grey Knights.

That's awesome York, back when there were GS Cults (Mafia style!), the DA were 'Native American's" (The Death Wing at least, can't remember if the whole chapter was), the Sansei(sp?), Star Child, Zoats, Squats (an actual Army!!!), Assault Cannons wrecked everything! and on and on. I've still got ten of the original pewter Grey Knights when the Nemesis force weapons were the Custodian Gun/Glaive or Gun/Sword. They were considered so detailed back in the day.

MkIII for me.

I love it's total lack of aesthetic consideration. It's there to protect the wearer, and nothing more.

Plus, it's the Power Armour Mk that has won the 'Power Armour Mk Likely to Look Most Impressive Crashing Through A Wall' aware 10,000 years running!

I have to agree with Mr.Mystery. I love the brutal aspect of MKIII. That being said I like to use MKVI helmets for conversions. I started playing during 3rd edition and I think the limited number of beakie helmets in the tactical box made them feel special.

I'm an Imperial Fists player so it's gotta be Mk III for me. It actually looks like it's built to take a battering and then dish one out! That said I do have a sneaky fondness for the Mk VI helm's so my 10 man Assault Squad all have beakie heads.

Mark VII is the standard and the most distinctive Marine armour; no one votes for it because its success is taken as a given. The Mark VIII has nothing further to add except a faintly superfluous collar. Sentimentalist that I am, my favourite will always be the Mark VI, though the Mark IV has a certain 'Greatest Hits' quality, in that it combines the best of what went before and aptly previewed what followed.

Mark V for me. Gotta love those metal studs (I meant on the armor, weirdos!). The fact that I'm a die hard Chaos boy has nothing to do with it! Okay, maybe it does... Heresy FTW!

09-17-2013, 01:24 AM
Mk IV has to be winning by virtue of having the greatest number of Forgeworld kits available for it?

Mk III for me, the brutal functionality of it wins out. Closely followed by Mk VI and Mk VIII.

I never particularly liked Mk IV, the legs always looked too weedy and I don't love the helmets. For some reason the helmets always put me in mind of Eighties/early Nineties BMX and Motocross styling, don't know why. Either way, they're the ones that tend to get weeded out...

Mark 4. Dat Helmet...

BrotherAlpharius
09-17-2013, 02:25 AM
I voted Mark IV but Marks VI and III were very close behind. Mark IV has been my favourite since long before ForgeWorld started making models. I started the game in the run up to the release of 2nd Edition so remember well when beakies were more common and I think for me 4 combines a bit of the 6 snout and the 7 stormtrooper look nicely.

I do think they have different character and would choose them accordingly for projects. For Raven Guard the Corvus pattern is great. For an army like Imperial Fists I'd go with a mix of 2 and 3 for the uncompromisingly brutal functionality.

I agree 7 suffers from being the norm.

The mk. IV definitely have the coolest helmets but man i love me some Mk. VIII armor! ever since i started 40k in 3rd I always loved the Sgt. with the high Mk8 high collar before it was called mk8 it was just the cool sgt chest piece. Then when the first Sternguard models came out and that Sgt with the mk8 with power fist I was just sold. Definitely one of my favorite Marine models ever.

Yeah, totally disagree.
But I suppose the joy is that the only models in that box that ain't 6th edition game legal in some way are the genestealer cultists.
But all the marines are still game legal I think. Or did one of the termies have a plasma weapon?

the collar of the mk VIII is not just a detail addition, its a 'bullet catcher' as the other mks have soft armour at the neck which allows stray and ricochets to get a quick kill.

mk VIII is supposed to have a fancy reactor that can go silent, all should have mini powerfists and in built storm bolters (based on the old termi ones) if you go from the jes goodwin artwork/designs from the early 90's.

Mark 5 Armor for me. The reactive studs and the plating just scream imposing bad-@$$ to me. Mark 4 seems too "polished" to be on a gritty, front line space marine. Mark 6 has a nostalgic feel because it was the armor that I started with playing Rogue Trader.

Thanks,

I love my Mark V marines. It, along with Mark III is some of the most unique looking armour on the detail level. Sure it is the first normal shaped helmet, but the studs make that different. Also the armour straps and no bevel shoulder pads add tiny details that make this armour my favorite.

Mark III is second, if only because I love the Mohawk command helmet.

Mark I just looks way tool faaaabulous for my tastes.

II and III and IV are just a bit primitive.

V (the Dalek marine), looks like they've got Space Measles.

VI is actually my era. The Womble Marines were my first Space Marines, but that doesn't mean I don't find them silly. Though I suppose they must do a wicked-fierce headbutt.

VII and VIII are my favourites. I guess I go with VIII because the collar makes armour sense and chaplains can paint it black with a little white bit at the front.

I have a soft spot for the Mk 6. It's the helmet combined with the first memories of 40k.

The thing that I wonder about; isn't the helmet on the Mk 3 supposed to be fixed forward, leaving the wearers head free to rotate inside? Base model for the Terminator helmet, or has that all been reconed like case-less bolter rounds?
