Ok again with this post not sure if really apt for the News/Rumour section should probably be in general discussion...

Anyway, when did GW stop doing the limited editions figs like the old offer of "order over 35€ online and get this limited sergeant free" or the free fig attached to WD (remember the original Necron release with a free warrior attached? I still have mine!).

Ok I know that with DV there was the limitied reclusiarch but that's not really the same as I think that DV still comes with that guy (correct me if I'm wrong).

I always like those limited run figs and as I am unfortunate in not being able to go to any of the GD, I cannot pick up any limited runs unless I pay over the odds on Ebay, etc.

Does anyone know why they stopped the limited figs or if they'll be bringing them back?

Just a guess here but they are not financially worth while.

The last one I recall was a Termiantor and Nob from Assault on Black Reach, and that was just 2 models on a mini-sprue.

As for GD, no exclusive models there this year. IIRC.

I did like them, but ho-hum.

Marco Columbo was this year. It is a WFB mini.

There is a games day exclusive limited edition model this year, its a new sculpt of Marco Columbo, there are also the limited event only Forge world models, DkoK Quartermaster and an Empire Priest, last year there was the 40K limited edition aniversary model.

There have been plenty of limited edition models lately, just no free models.

Seems eveyone forgets the Games Day model when its not a Space Marine and then people complain about Space Marines getting all the new models...

But contrary ot previous years, the Gamesday model is a) not included in ticket price and b) not usable in a game.

At least all the special Orks/Marines/Warriors of Chaos its been for a few years have been usable in a army. This guy is just a show piece, like the WD subscription model

I did say this year, and as we are in the 40k forum I pressume that we are referring to 40k, not WFB.

On the bright side you won't find people trying to sell him for £150 on ebay.

they are always designed as show pieces first, its just that the nature of 40k miniatures means they are inherently "showy"

remember the slayer dwarf on the gold daemon head?

They did army boxes with a limited HQ for the longest time, and that was my favorite type of LE mini. They do the White Dwarf and games days minis still, but that's it. The DV special character was only in the first wave of shipment, and is no longer available, however, they still have a permanent steel mold for him (He was plastic, right, and not FC?) which they can re-pop anytime.

THey havn't done an incentive mini in years. I really miss those figures. I loved my Ogre LE tyrant, and a couple of the SMone offs are really cool.

I've never liked the idea of LE models anyway. It just seems a waste of time to sculpt and produce a model briefly, then stop, when there are so many people out there who would happily buy them when they can. It's not very fair on people who can't get them at the time, and loses them money because those people would buy them later but can't.

None of the models on the front of WD have been limited edition? The goliath (my first model!), the necron, the terminator & ork were all the same as the standard models. And were included to encourage people to buy the standard models.

But it is a pity that we haven't had one for a while.

Someone mentioned the limited edition mini from Dark Vengeance box set. He/she still said it was still there. That is wrong. The first week release of DV had the limited edition Chaplain. Once they are sold out, that's it, GW didn't make anymore. So he is not available anymore like was mentioned.

NOW The Hobbit, still has the special mini or Rahgdast the Brown. (sp?) still available. Those didn't sellout like the DV did. Wonder if the poster confused with this box set was still available or not.

I don't recall anymore "limited minis" as of late anymore. Maybe the one you get with White Dwarf or not. Not sure if GW stopped that as well.

Same story as Dread Fleet... They don't make it anymore but when you're lucky you might still find a LE box in a store with the miniature (you won't need much luck to still find a Dread Fleet box :) )

It is much easier and cheaper for GW to have produced limited models in metal due to the molding/casting process. Metals could be made pretty much on demand, whereas plastic requires a much more expensive mold and has a more complicated production run.

This is basically the rationale behind which miniatures are finecast and which are not. The idea was to decouple to cost from metals, as they historically jumped significantly of course crude oil doesn't do that

This was my point, ok LE might not be the right term per se but limited runs, incentive models, something to spice up you're average ten man SM tact squad/a different nob for your boyz/exarch to your whatevers/etc.

Maybe it due to the versatility of the sprues these days and the easier conversion possibilties without having to sculpt?

Not at all what I was getting at, not intentionally anyway. Having looked at the stuff of legends site there are a hell of a lot of LE from mid 90's excluding the GD ones. Outside of the GD figs, there isn't much else, of practical (read: in game) use, and as someone mentions even the GD figs can't always be used in regular games.

the only incentive fig I've seen recently has been the "new plastic Chaplain, armed with a crozius arcanum and bolt pistol, which is currently only available with (the SM Reclusiam Command Squad)."
