View Full Version : Holiday Swap - Signup Thread!
ElectricPaladin

Here we go. The time is now, the place is here, and signups begin today.
For the uninitiated, a swap works like this:
1) You will sign up by posting to this thread
2) I will assign you a swap partner.
3) You will assemble, for your partner, a gift package that includes a small gift item of local significance to you (food is a favorite choice, but fun touristy junk is also common) and a model or squad. The total value of your package is not to be lower than $50.
4) Whoever has you as a partner will, in turn, do the same for you.
5) This thread will contain information about what games and factions your partner is into. You can also use the forum tools to find their other threads for more hints.
6) This is a "some creative content added" swap, which means that you will do something to add your personal touch to the stuff you send. If you aren't comfortable with your painting skills, do some neat conversions. If you aren't comfortable with your conversion skills, at least assemble the models in some creative poses. This thread will include more information about what your partner wants (ie. just the models, don't do any basing, go to town - whatever).
7) All packages will be sent by the sending day (October 31st) so that they will arrive by the opening day (December 21st) and we will all get presents for the holidays.
CLARIFICATION: Your partner is the person you are sending a package to. That person's partner is not necessarily you, though it might work out that way. You will be another party's partner. All of this is to remain secret until opening day, though you can post ominous hints if you feel like it.
NOTE: I'm not going to enforce a maximum on packages. It just doesn't seem worth it to me to limit other peoples' generosity. However, you should be aware that the package you get will probably be around $50, so don't spend $60 on a package if not getting the same thing from whoever has you as a partner would annoy you. Also, please don't go overboard. I don't want anyone to be embarrassed if their monetary circumstances lead them to do the minimum while their partner has the means to go and buy them a linebreaker squadron or something. Use your own judgment.
Finally, the answer to the question I'm sure you're all asking - how to sign up?
It works thusly: you post to this thread with all the information your partner needs. This includes your real name and address (you can PM those to me if you like), the games and factions you play, your preferences regarding degree of completion, and any additional limitations (dietary, etc) that your partner should know. Additionally, you should add to this post if you are willing to ship internationally and if you are willing to serve as an angel (an angel is a participant who will step in and create an additional package if someone flakes - this rarely comes up).
As the organizer of the swap, I reserve the right to not serve as an angel. This is because I am the archangel - if someone flakes and no one will or can step in, I am responsible for taking care of it, even if this includes multiple participants and expensive shipping. Thus is the burden of the swapmaster.
Here we go. I'm going to post first to the thread so everyone knows what a "proper" sign-up post looks like. The sign-up deadline is the last day of September.
Have fun!

Don't worry, folks. I just PMed everyone else who said they were interested and hasn't chimed in here yet. My wife - an inveterate swapmistress - also tells me that three people is actually enough for a swap, so if we're it, we're still in business. We'll just post a ton of pictures and have so much fun that everyone will want to join us next year.

sculpting materials I may have not encountered before are cool too (I use GS and plasticard mostly)

I don't know about you guys, but I'm already thinking about possibilities for every partner I might end up with. I've got all sorts of painting and conversion ideas, and I'm already scheming about how I'm going to squeeze every last drop of generosity out of the $50 limit. Where do I know that I can get good deals? Do I have any models lying around that I know I don't want anymore that I can throw into the package just for fun?
We'll see :D.
How about you guys? Are you getting pumped?

I think that one of the ways the Brits could make the North Americans in the swap happy would be to send us Forge World. I'm not sure what the North Americans could send that is similarly local. Raccoons?

Yeah... shipping gets pretty brutal. I'm sure it's not that bad, though. When I had to ship to the UK in my last swap it only cost me about $15. Something reasonable. Definitely not $80.

Ok, everyone. I will now be sending out the swap assignments.
The swap now enters its third and penultimate stage. For the next couple of months, you should post teasers about what you are working on. Don't reveal who your partner is! Just post tantalizing hints.
The ship date is the end of November. Of course, nobody's going to hunt you down if you take longer... but be warned! If that happens, it's your responsibility to ship it via a faster (and therefore more expensive) method, should that happen.
Watch your inboxes! Swap assignments are coming soon.
If you have any changes to your preferences, post them here. If you want to post some examples of your current armies so your mysterious benefactor knows how to match it, post it here. If you have any questions about your mysterious benefactee, PM me so I can answer your questions without revealing your identity.
This is when the fun really starts.

Your Swap Thread Post Challenge (STPC) of the week is:
Post one thing about your army and playstyle that your mysterious benefactor should know about you. This can be a direct refutation of something you already posted, or a clarification, or a nigh-irrelevant fact that your mystery partner just might find useful.
Kevlarshark
09-30-2013, 02:44 PM
Ok, I play three main Armies.
Night Lords - Focusing on firepower and hard hitting assault units, I like to overload opponents with dreadnoughts and defilers (which according to logic shouldn't work, but does).
Praetorian Guard - Based around an Al Raheem counts as "Allan Raymond" mainly sneaky stuff , infiltrators, scouting and outflanking units, supported by Artillery.
Blood Pact Guard - Started out as Chaos cultists for the Night Lords but evolved into a close combat guard list with lots of penal legion and power weapon blob squads...Starting to go a bit crazy with the conversions on this one.
Sorry can't narrow it down to just one thing, thats what you get for asking me about my armies and playstyle

Well what to say? Just completed sorting the models so my Brotherhood of Fire Space Marines can have a full company, but still a few models short on the first company. They are a siege specialist chapter, much like the Imperial Fists (who they are successors of).
My Orks are primarily Kopta based, though I am starting to think about my next Ork armies, which will be a Dread Mob and Tank Krew, but not sure in which order.
Imperial Guard are mostly a Tank Company, but I do have plenty of supporting infantry and flyers. Don't have much artillery, aside from a Minotaur super heavy.

Me, I'm working on my Iyanden army (still) so far I have 3 units of Wraithguard units all with the cannons, 3 waveserpents, a Spiritseer, a crimson hunter, 2 Wraithlords, 1 wraithknight and 10 warp spiders. Believe it or not but that lot clocks in at roughly 2000pts :o. I'm trying to steer away from too many non wraith units. I'm not a huge Eldar fan really but it's just the look of the the wraith aesthetic and the Iyanden fluff that has me hooked on this army.
The other current project is my Blood Ravens, I really settled on this chapter because I liked the colour scheme more than anything else. But it's still a new project and I only have 2 tactical squads, some of the new Sternguard and a librarian.
I really don't mind what my mystery partner has in store for me, what ever surprise I get it's going to be get pride of place in my display cabinet. What I'm really excited about however is what I have started for my recipient ;). The order I placed arrived yesterday :D

Swap Data
• Details sent by PM to EP
• I will be an angel for the UK only.
• I am willing to ship internationally (main swap partner).
• Dietary requirements: Here's a good one for you... I'm allergic to Alcohol. Yes, seriously. No, not for all of my life. Yes, occasionally it's annoying (though mostly it's fine).
Hobby Info
• Warhammer Fantasy (Rasetra - A Tomb Kings & Lizardmen force)
• Warhammer 40k (Blood Angels, Eldar)
Various Preferences
• I play games in a GW only environment, so would appreciate if swaps were GW or Forgeworld parts only.
• Feel free to convert creatively to fit my themes! I love to spend time working on ways to make things a bit different!
• Blood Angels: Prefer unpainted (collecting the chapter so would want to fit any addition in) unless you happen to be able to match my '2ed bright' colour scheme! Basing wise unpainted or un-based preferred as I'm matching bases per battle company to various board styles.
• TK/Lizardmen: Happy to paint these up - it's my favourite part of the hobby (besides buying stuff!) - but if you love painting too then don't let me get in the way of what you want to do! My Lizardmen are Royal Blue, and TK a light, dusty, warm bone, with shields in Dark Angels green, and accents in lizardmen hide and bronze. I'll put some pics up once I'm home (away working at present) for inspiration.
Additional Info and useful (or not) tidbits
I love (non blue) cheese, cake and meat of all varieties.
I'm a PC gamer and tech geek.
I'm a fan of football (even the American version, go Bronco's!) and F1 (yey Ferrari).
Apart from black (not particularly useful), my favourite colour is red.
Where hobby is concerned, I'm a collector, hoarder & hobby butterfly. I own miniatures from most Warhammer and 40k armies, plus space hulk, mordheim, necromunda. Recently, I'm making a concerted effort to focus, and also to get into the gaming side of the hobby, something I've not really done much of in my many years collecting! As a result, I've narrowed my hobby down into 2 armies per system.
As my brother was keen to get into Warhammer (Empire) I've started a Tomb Kings army to take advantage of my love of Ancient history (Egypt in particular). After reading the Nagash trilogy I decided to theme the army around Rasetra so I could gain a wider variety of mini's and a second historical influence in the form of Lizardmen. I've so far built spearmen, archers, ushabti, a casket, warsphinx, necrosphinx and some cold one chariots, and have tomb guard and sepulchral stalkers (converted to giant jungle snakes) unboxed and ready to be built. On the Lizardmen front, I've got 2 battalion box sets built, less the cavalry which I used for the TK chariots.
I've been amassing Blood Angels since I was a kid, and it's my eventual goal to collect the entire chapter. I've currently got most of the 1st company (plus Sanguinary Guard), all bar 5 of 2nd company (comprised entirely of RT and 2ed miniatures from back in the day), most of 7th company and good chunks of 3rd & 4th sat in boxes ready to be built when I get some spare hobby time! As a result, pretty much anything related to Blood Angels will be of use, particularly on the vehicle front.
I liked the eldar mini's since 2ed, so have amassed a mishmash of eldar, with an army based primarily on aspect warriors, harlequins and seers.
Can't wait to get cracking on my project, now just need to decide on what to provide...

Today, I shall be paying for the miniatures goodies for my swapee. I did have a thought the other night though; if I were to ship my intended local speciality at the end of october, it would be a pile of rotten mush by the time it gets opened... may have to either rethink that, or ship it later.

I wasn't sure if we were shipping 31st October or in November to be honest. Suppose we need to leave some room for postage variance, and 'angel time' (though I'm sure we'll not have to resort to that). Maybe EP can clear up as the PM I got was different to the OP in this topic.

The trio includes two of my favorite models from your army, which I have always admired and despaired of ever being able to paint...

So this is quite difficult, I want to get this right and make sure my partners item matches what they already have colour scheme wise. Obviously colours are colours etc but I want to get it just right. Problem is how do you find out without giving the game away too ? I am a bit of a stickler for detail or am I worrying too much ?

Well, I think that most partners aren't going to worry too much about matching exactly.
If it's a matter of matching a scheme that you haven't seen yet, you can always ask me to ask your partner to post some pics. I'll muddy the waters by listing more than one of their factions, so they won't know what you're buying (that was for anyone else reading the conversation - I know that I'm your partner :p). In our case, I know that you've got to be asking about my Tau or my Sisters, since those are my only 40k factions I have never posted, so I'll go ahead and get some of them up there ASAP.
But, if you're worrying about matching a color scheme exactly, don't. That's the price you pay when you field gift models alongside the ones you painted. Anyone who cares over-much about that will have requested an unpainted gift.

I'm bummed, too...
Honestly, I think it's my fault. I set the price as too high. I think a lot of folks are having second thoughts. Next time, I'll do a swap more in the $35 neighborhood. That should be an easier bar to clear for most folks, and I think that the swap will be both larger and healthier as a result.

I wouldn't blame yourself. To be honest given the price of the hobby I don't think £30 ($50) is a high entry point. There's not a lot other than a single character blister you can buy for under that for most forces. If you wanted a bigger swap, one thing that might have improved take-up would have been to put cross posts in the 40k/fantasy boards for extra traffic. I've only been on the forums a very short time yet I've noticed the people who post to the oubliette seem to be a very small group of dedicated posters.
I'm still excited about doing mine, anyway. Far more so in fact actually than the thought of receiving anything cool!

Well there's good news for my recipient and there's some bad news. 1st the bad news. What your getting will unfortunately require your good self to paint and assemble yourself. The good news is I'm sure he will like it very much and I'm looking to ship to him this week.
I think I have a legitimate reason for this. My good lady is in the early stages of pregnancy and were now in the process of moving to a larger house within a month. Yep that's right, bambino number 3 is on his or her way. I'm sure you can all appreciate that my spare time at the moment is quite limited and I have my hands full with this. But not wishing to let my friend down I have pushed the boat out a little bit and got him something a bit better than I had originally planned. Something I recall from his posts that he likes but struggles to justify the cost.

Shipped!! To the person getting a box from Nathan Breen, I am bad with time and forgot the distance between now and December(do some time in the Middle East and all the months blur together forever). So, regional gift is realtively but not critically perishable. I would either put the box(which is pretty big) at the bottom of the fridge or open it early to get the small box out.

Hey all, just wanted to give you an update on the package sent by my awesome swapmate, Deadlift. It arrived this very morning. The doorbell actually rang as I was reading Deadlift's post. Spooky, I know.
As with all packages sent through the Warp, this one suffered. Specifically, one of the two beers... ah... exploded. Consulting with my wife - a veteran swapmistress - we decided that it would be best to open the package early in order to check on the contents, as well as to eliminate the stale beer smell.
Did you know that if beer gets stale enough it starts to smell like pickles? :D
Anyway, except for the one beer, everything else in the package was fine (including the other beer :D). As for what that stuff was... I'll post the pictures on the official opening day. I'll say no more except to hint that bonded Ceramite and Adamantium is clearly stronger stuff than cardboard and glass, and invulnerable saves really do save your butt from time to time.
Thank you, Deadlift. I will post more exuberantly - and with pictures! - when everyone else gets to join in the fun!

As a dork in the military you have to find shipping solutions for everything. Bottles work best bubble wrapped individually inside smaller boxes inside the big one. Also just tell them it's cider or balsamic vinegar or something. They aren't going to open your package anyway and the conversation you have to have otherwise is obnoxious(which it seems you were subjected too).

Wouldn't want to swap for a gift card, as it goes against the joy of the swap, but must admit will be a little disappointed if people can't get stuff delivered before xmas, at least without posting up on the forum to let the collective know. You put your trust in fellow forum goers when you sign up to these secret Santa type affairs, and expect people to communicate any problems if they do exist.
Many of us get our best hobby time of the year over the holiday period, and having a new project to work on/with is a big attraction to the swap. Would be a shame for everyone to not get aomething in time for the xmas break.
Secondarily, as a late sender myself, I knew the fault for being late to ship was my own, so I took the necessary steps (courier) to ensure I could keep my pledge. If the general consensus in the thread was that people were going to be late, we could easily have pushed back the deadline by open discussion to avoid the scenario we're in now.
Perhaps today or Monday we can at least reveal who is or isn't getting parcels, and make a call whether to open them or wait?

My partner is the inestimable Rosebriar, and he will be getting his package late... but I will post a picture of the finished models by the end of the day on Monday, so he knows what he'll be getting! And, as I said, I'll be including a little extra something by way of an apology.

Well I'm really very happy with my great gift. Kevlar Shark I would firstly like to say thank you, I am really happy with the models you sent me and the great conversions you have done. I got 5 scouts and 5 Sternguard, all of whom have been heavily converted with bionics, forgeworld parts, scenic resin bases and tons of other cool stuff. I'm not very good at this kind of thing so to have some great unique models is just brilliant so once again thank you. I really appreciate the effort you put in.
I also got a batch of ANZAC biscuits which were apparently very nice but I didn't get to try them. The children and their friends inhaled them this morning but I was assured they were very nice. This time of year our house just seems to be groaning with family and friends popping in and out and I should have hidden them. Lesson learned I guess. I'm going to have a bash at making some for myself. Thanks for the recipe :)
Here's a picture of the models I quickly took, it doesn't really do them justice but as you can see there are pre-heresy bits in there as well as some other awesome stuff.

Kevlar Shark one more time thank you very much, and good luck with your impending doom (wedding) I hope it all goes well. Also merry Christmas and a happy new to you and everyone else involved in the holiday swap. Thank you Electric for organising it and you can count me in for next year :D

Will give my swap partner time to post their own comments and photo's of the package I sent, but have some photo's of my own I can add later on.

So my partner was Rosebriar from over yonder in Japan. ALong with the items shown was a potentially perishable food item which was a french pastry, japan style. Which the kids loved and annihilated back in Nov when it showed up.
So here are the pics.... First is the Goshapon toys, which I will likely regift to my kids because they are perfect entry models for little ones to start with (Thanks for thinking of the kids :-))
6315
Next is the AT-43 Fire Walker. How does that fit in with the gaming I do with 40K... watch and see.
6316
Next is a random set of parts from a Leman Russ... partially built.... OK, this is kinda weird. Tank parts and a non-GW walker...
6317
Now, once you see how the track sections have magnet pegs on the back, and that the Walker actually arrived in parts, you will find that it's a magnetized swap out for a Cadian special weapons tank which was devised by enginseers who've spent too much time on the front lines and needed some advantage over chose at the gate.
6318
THanks man, this is absolutely the coolest.

Neat and clever conversion easily pass as two wholly separate models if not for the gun profile.
As I know my parcel has been delivered, clearly my swap partner is either:
a) Overcome with joy, and off playing with his new toys instead of posting about them.
b) Overcome with grief at his gift and has destroyed all internet capable devices in a mighty fit of nerd-rage
c) Dead from sugar overdose from my 'local produce'
I'm hoping for a) but C does have an outside chance! Nom nom nom...

I'd like to second that everyone should please chime in before the New Year. I will be able to post my partner's present by then, shortly before chucking it into the mail. Even if you haven't had the time to take/post photos - totally understandable, given the rush of the holiday season - it would be good for us all to know that all presents have arrived safely!

Huzzah! I am off the "naughty list." Today I dropped off my gift to Jacob in Oakland at FedEx! It is on it's way and is guaranteed to be in Oakland in three days (not counting tomorrow: New Year's Day). Whew! I feel so much better now! (Jacob, send me a PM if you want the FedEx tracking number).
My question, fellow gifters, is this: should I post up pictures of what I sent now or wait until Jacob has received his package. Jake, it's mostly your call. I put a lot of work into these minis and I'm really excited about them getting to the table-top!
Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Let's have a great year of gaming, friends! Cope

Hey all! Latecomer Jacob here. I think my package to KevlarShark should have arrived already (lord knows the shipping cost was enough to imply it'd be ****ing teleported there) and I'm eagerly checking my mailbox for Chris's package. I can;t wait to have your package in my hands Chris. Feel it throbbing with strength and ... well.. toughness, I suppose. :)
Chris, I'm a sucker when it comes to surprises and suspense. If you have good pictures, I say let the good people see them.
Unless you want to be a sadist and make me wait the one or two more days (which is a wonderful idea too. I love suspense!)
Thanks again for including me, albeit last minute. Hope everyone had (and is still having) a wonderful holiday season.

65446545654665476548The Hydra is the Finecast model from GW. I don't know where all the Finecast hate in our community comes from. I've yet to have a bad finecast model. This one was just like the others I've assembled and painted: just fine. I had to putty in some gaps with greenstuff but I have to do that with every model any way... the Dark Elf Sorceress is a sculpt by Reaper Miniatures. I LOVE Reaper miniatures! If I ever get back into WFB I intend to build an Empire army so that I can use gobs of Reaper minis in my army!

65496550Jacob, have a Happy New Year full of great gaming, sir! I had a LOT of fun painting these models for this swap. It has actually made me consider getting back into WFB. Look at this crystal ball by the Hydra's foot: I made that out of the green stuff that was left over after I filled the gaps in the Hydra. Then I primed it, painted it with a stippling technique, and glossed it with 'ard coat. BTW, both models have been sealed with dull-coat. I made the sorceress' ball on her staff glossy to match the ball by the Hydra's foot. In addition to these models I sent you:
a $20 gift card to Starbucks (because gamers run on coffee)
a cube of Chessex dice (because we all need more dice)
a jar of a local condiment (a little taste of my corner of Texas)
the unpainted handlers that came with the Hydra (so that you could better tie them into your existing army)
Cheers! Cope

As promised, here are the models that Lobster Overlord sent me: 6552655365546555 Lobster Overlord, I cannot say enough times how cool I think this gift is! Thank you! Here's what I got:
A unit of Sea Dogs (fully painted and based)
A Heavy Warjack (for me to paint up as I see fit)
A bag of Turkey Jerky (a local taste... Lobster Overlord lives in an area that supplies a lot of the country's turkey)
A Games Workshop Dark Angel paint set (DA colored paints, two Space Marines on the sprue, and a paintbrush).
As you can see, a veritable treasure trove of hobby goodness! I'd like you to cast your gaze up the decks that my Sea Dogs are standing upon: Lobster Overlord cast those himself! I love the steampunk look that these bases have. My troops look like they are standing upon the deck of the Nautilus! Now I'm in a pickle: do I try to recreate these bases for my other troops or not?! (I know: first world problems).

6556655765586559Again, I am most impressed with these bases. I've never ventured into the world of casting my own resin... perhaps it's time I learn!

Forgeworld Emperors Children Palatine Blades, built on custom milliput bases, then painted, sealed and ready for war!
A terribly british postcard with message
Selection of traditional handmade local sweets & toffees (since Posting from the UK to Canada it turns out is quite restrictive!)
It also turns out I was WT88's partner in the swap also, so he gave me an update so I'm now in the know!

It was a first step out... a beta test.I'm sure the next one will go smoother. I have a suggestion: make folks apply to be in the swap. Everyone gets months of notice that its coming and that they need to have a project done by X date to participate. They send in pics to the organizers by X date and at that point the swap is a go for all the guys who are ready... just a suggestion...
PS: the downside of my idea is that you don't get to customize what you are working on with one person in mind... :(
