If theres one thing that drives this hobby its the artwork, it offers inspiration and a visceral image of the 40k world that test just can't capture, with that in mind, who's willing to share some of their favourite artwork for 40k here?

Here's some of mine (currently on my Desktop rotation)

Majestic Chicken on DeviantArt does a really good job, doesn't he? He's very skilled at taking the old black-and-white art and adding in the color, as he did for the three you chose.

My favorite are a few of the following:

I'm still a sucker for the pieces that got me into the hobby, the Dark Angels cover (though I prefer the second ed that came out soon after);

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/d/d8/Codex_Dark_Angels_FCover.jpg

and the 3rd Ed Rulebook cover

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTBpUEIon-UM0yrHBzPYAVVba78CLccOX2tOMnbK0jsyaUFbFYU

There have been numerous better pieces since, but these two just spark something off in me.

My favourite 40K artwork almost always comes from early 40K.

My favourites of all time are these two:

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb183/MaltonNecromancer/40K%20artwork/1stedadmech_zps966915a4.jpg
http://www.oocities.org/fabricatorgeneral/artwork/techpriests1.gif

The Jes Goodwin techpriest picture is singlehandedly responsible for my twenty-year desire for/frustration at the lack of an AdMech army.

Other artworks I really like tend to be the less obvious.

I wish they did Imperial Guard in plastic that looked like this:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Zi4yYv-hW_4/TbgfrPp6IdI/AAAAAAAABHE/vbcANw6JvVo/s1600/2nd+edition+imperial+guard+greatcoat+concept+jes+g oodwin.jpg

Marines have never looked cooler than this 1st edition Rogue Trader art IMO:

YorkNecromancer

I also like some of the 'Love Can Bloom' fan art:

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb183/MaltonNecromancer/40K%20artwork/LCB_Logo1_zpsf9f8233b.jpg
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb183/MaltonNecromancer/40K%20artwork/LCB_Headcam_zpsd1966020.jpg
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb183/MaltonNecromancer/40K%20artwork/LCB_Pursued_zps010a7e31.jpg

These's also this Dark Eldar fan art I found. I like the fact it could be the equivelant of a DE family photo:
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb183/MaltonNecromancer/40K%20artwork/86839402_zps46302669.jpg

YorkNecromancer

I also like the extremely rare non-fanservicey art that shows women in the 40K universe:

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb183/MaltonNecromancer/40K%20artwork/949903133_zps658ffb6a.jpg
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb183/MaltonNecromancer/40K%20artwork/1865793097_zpse8346418.jpg
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb183/MaltonNecromancer/40K%20artwork/994334207_zps55dd7ba4.jpg

I always find the almost total lack of human female presence in 40K artwork something that makes the suspension of disbelief significantly harder to maintain, so it's nice to see some pieces where non-Eldar women are acknowledged as existing. Even (especially) when they're AdMech cyber monstrosities.

And while I've never been a fan of Chaos (and probably never will), I have always had a soft spot for this piece:

Finally, I love the Forge World 'realistic' interpretations of Space Marines:
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb183/MaltonNecromancer/40K%20artwork/_1209591576171_zps29fad917.png

As well as "Soulstorrm"'s Inquisitor - this is how the Inquisition should look:

I like a lot of Beckjann's work on DeviantArt; this one is one of my favorites
4773
It's rare to find a picture of the Emperor out of his armor. Here he is in his Imperial Army uniform.
4774
The Imperial Palace. I've always liked landscapes, and this one captures much of the spirit of 40k.

Superb link.

Also quite interesting to note the high number of Sororitas pictures relative to their appearance in tournaments. I wonder if it's a whole male gaze/fanservice thing, personal taste of the guy who's compiled it, or indicative that Sororitas are more well liked than the Internets would have you believe?

There's also a high number of artworks featuring female humans. Shame there will never be a model for characters like these:

Love a lot of the pieces here, especially those non-cheesecake character portraits you've found YorkN.

IMO, no "great works of 40K" thread can be complete without these two early John Blanche pieces:

Yorky, I think the internets likes the SoB partly because of male gaze with some of the art's obvious leanings, but may also be because they're 40k as all get out with the icons, flames, skulls and giant guns. Some of my favourite 40k art is SoB art:

Ahem, Soulstorm? Sergeant Cyrus even points out we don't talk about Kaurava Campaign anymore. That's Inquisitor Adrastia from Dawn of War 2 Retribution. I've been wanting to try to kitbash these (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1140003&prodId=prod1140026a) two (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1140003&prodId=prod1630024a) minis to make her for a while(remove the arms, cloak, and top of the crazy hair from the lady + take the hat off the guy's head and cut the body and legs out of the coat + ??? = Adrastia), but for one, ugh at the thought of dealing with that much converting on a metal model as I'd have to reposition the legs, and two, that face...

I like the FW marine art though. Need to go through this and a few of the links at home for wallpapers...

Ahh, Meh'lindi a fine assassin if ever there was one. I can understand why Draco wanted to resurrect her.

Its a piece of clint langley art that was the publication cover of the book "harlequin" from the first trilogoy of books published by BL, its by the guy that wrote space marine and features very old background such as the god emperor talking and the like.

Be warned, the ending.....yeah things escalate quickly, go off track and I don't think ANY of the major plot points in the story are ever resolved....still a good read.
