View Full Version : Kinda Scared to start IG...

I have just ordered some upgrade packs from FW for my yet-to-be-started IG army. The reason I have been holding out for so many years to do them is because I fear that once I start, there will just be so much to collect that I will possibly go insane.

Can anybody reinforce the value and rewarding nature of collecting IG, or is it just another habit and I would be better off financially getting into drugs and alcohol?

Guard is fun. Here's my experience:

Once you have your basics (which can be a few guys I'll admit...) it's easy to add more.

A minimum platoon, a chimera and a squad of vets is 35 infantry models, 3 HW bases and a tank. That's your first 500 points, roughly, (with a commie lord or psyker) and it seems like a lot compared to a marine army of the same points value. But the thing is, once you've got those 35 dudes and their chimera, you don't need 35 dudes and a chimera for every 500 points after that. I painted my first 500 pts. in a month or two.

All it takes to get to much bigger armies after that is tanks, tanks and more tanks, and maybe some more infantry if you feel like it. And bazillions of guardsmen isn't a problem to collect and paint because if that's what you want it's probably because you LIKE collecting and painting bazillions of guardsmen - and then where's the problem? Mech builds won't be much more model intensive than a marine army, and are competitive.

I'd say guard may take longer to get up and running in the early stages that some other armies, depending on how quickly you build and paint, but it's nothing too serious and after that it's just like any other army.

Well, it is right up there with drugs and alcohol as far as expensive debilitating habits go, but it really is quite rewarding. The Guard is one of the most characterful armies in the game, for example if you love military history they offer endless chances to play that out.

It took me a long time to convince myself to start my Guard army, and I have built it up very slowly to its current (huge) size. The new codex has some advantages for you starting out, you can begin with a compact playable force of HQ and Hardened Veteran squads. It may not exactly dominate on the table-top, but it is an entirely functional list that can compete.

You can try making a mechanized army if you want to have fewer models. Multiple chimeras can really reduce your model count without reducing your army's power. And then a few tanks to go along with it, and maybe some sentinels as well...

Ig is probably the most expensive 40k army... Do it up! I have a metal IG army and its rewarding to hear comments like "wow not cadians!". You can never have too much IG either! FOR THE EMPEROR!!!

It will be fun until you get bored with winning all the time. Then you will do what the other guard players do and nerf your lists on purpose by "experimenting" with sub-optimal lists like foot-slogging ones. Eventually you come full circle and play the same boring list every other guard player has, and your one Vendetta wins almost every objective game you have for you for the rest of your life.

So yeah, it can be pretty fun. ;)

I started my army in January and its nearly finished. Sit down and decide what you want to do. Once you have that plan, stick to it. I decided that once Ive finished what Ive got, thats it, no more.

In my ongoing 40k questionnaire people have so far voted IG the most competitive army in the game. The lowest score out of 16 that anyone has voted for them so far has been a 9. So most people consider IG to be a very dangerous opponent.

DT, get some IG, stay away from drugs and alcohol. Once you start on drugs and alcohol it's a down hill skid. First come the drugs and alcohol, then you find yourself working in a topless bar, living with a couple of strippers. They wreck your car, drink your alcohol, do your drugs, steal your money, and run off together because they have decided that they both like girls better. By this time you will be heartbroken, without a car, broke, and wishing for the good old days of Mountain Dew and plastic army men. Skip the pain and drama, buy some Moutain Dew and roll some dice.

* The above story is stricly hypothetical and never happened to me......really......atleast not lately.:D

I've collected a few large armies in the past, but non are as rewarding as my guard. There's just so much possibility with them. Grit your teeth and get stuck in mate.

I might be a little insane...I actually just started an IG army last month. The flexibility in an IG army is amazing, you can easily design an army based on fluffy themes or a competitive alpha strike list.

The strength of the IG is in numbers, spamming heavy tanks/artillery or even throwing more meat (troops) into the grinder. That said, building an IG army is expensive, (looks at my valkyrie) I think IG win prize for the most money to least amount of points model, ~$50 for 100points! ( the chimera is pretty expensive too, ~$30 for 55pts).

All in all, IG is very rewarding. The initial shock of all those plastic sprues quickly fades when you start building them.

I'm in the process of building (or rather painting atm cause roughly 3k are built thansk to tanks galore) an IG army based on FW traitors.

call me about "expensive" guard. those guys cost the same as cadians + ~25pound for resin upgrades for every 10 men.

then put them on the table, well painted and all is reward.

so YES guard are rewarding and are as good a money sink as drugs & alcohol. the good point about them is that if you want to quit you can ebay them and get some moeny back or at worst just trash them. with a ruined lifer you cannot do that!

If there are Strippers invovled, don't you at least need to give Drugs and Alcohol some consideration????

If you want an expensive and debilitating vice, look into Blackjack & Hookers (http://www.bnhblog.blogspot.com).

I have busting a gut to finish a space marine army and now I am just about ready to start my guard army. I've written an army list with a few variable options and I've got 90% of the models in boxes ready to go. I am very much intimidated by the amount of work in front of me. My local store manager and a few mates have reassured me to some degree by suggesting how washes and dry brushing enable you to produce effective tanks surprisingly quickly. I hope that it proves easier that painting yellow trim on power armour. (I am sick of power armour).

I don't know about you but I am really struggling to decide upon a strong camo scheme that can be reproduced easily across the army while looking good.

On a side note re the cost of guard---- , I do like to drink fine wines and smoke quality cigars whilst painting my plastic crack - combining to make particularly expensive 'me time.' If only I could find a way to introduce strippers into that equation for the complete experience - but I fear that would be logistocaly difficult and a tad extravagant. ;)

Guard was my first and is my favorite army. I've been dabbling in Blood Angels a little bit but they don't even come close to getting the attention that my guard get.

How could you not? It can field triple the amount of everything critical to the game in 5th edition as any other army. More meltas, more flamers, more vehicles, more fast units, more scoring units, more heavy weapons...how could it NOT be the best army in the game?

Right. Imperial Guard IS powerful. It's not unbeatable mind you, but it is very strong.

I have a 200 man all metal Mordian army with a few tanks and I love it! Go Guard Go! If you want easy go SM.

LOL the SM are about 10 times harder to play than the Guard right now.

If you enjoy shooting phases 3x longer than your opponent and like watching guys put their models back in the case for a half hour at a time the guard army is the one for you.

Thanks all. I will be getting the Cadian battleforce and a Valk in the next week or so. I am not overly worried about how powerful the army is (I just picked up some Necrons), I am just fascinated with the Guard. I have four other armies started (Tau, Orks, BT, Necrons) but I always seem to have that craving for a crapload of guardsman on the table backed up by some sentinels, tanks, and valks.
